Why CoD4 Still Needs Its Own Servers
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare came out in 2007, and its PC multiplayer has always lived on dedicated servers run by players and clans rather than on matchmaking. That is the reason the game is still played: a server is a place. Regulars learn its rotation, its rules and its admins, and a clan can practise on the same box every night.
You can run the server program on a spare PC, but that means leaving it on all day, opening a port on your router and sharing your home upload with every player. A hosted server moves all of that into a data centre. The address never changes, the line is symmetrical, and when something goes wrong at two in the morning there is a support desk awake to answer.
Because the game is no longer patched, a CoD4 server is also refreshingly stable. There are no weekly updates to break your mods. Once the rotation and rules are right, the server simply keeps running them.
Inside server.cfg: The Settings That Matter
Almost everything about a CoD4 server is set in one text file, server.cfg, which the server reads at start-up. Each line is a set command followed by a variable and a value. You edit it in the panel's config editor and restart to apply the changes.
| Variable | What it does | Typical value |
|---|---|---|
| sv_hostname | The name players see in the browser | Your clan or server name, with colour codes if you like |
| rcon_password | Password for remote admin commands | Long and private |
| g_password | Join password for a private server | Empty for public play |
| sv_maxclients | How many players can join | Up to your plan's slot count |
| g_gametype | The game type at start-up | war, dm, dom, koth, sab or sd |
| sv_mapRotation | The list of game types and maps to cycle | Pairs of gametype and map |
| scr_hardcore | Hardcore rules on or off | 0 or 1 |
| sv_pure | Reject clients with changed game files | 1 on public servers |
Game Types, Limits and Hardcore
CoD4 ships with six standard multiplayer game types, and each has its own score and time limit variables, so a server can run quick Team Deathmatch and slow, tense Search and Destroy in the same rotation.
- war: Team Deathmatch, the default public mode.
- dm: Free-for-all, every player for themselves.
- dom: Domination, three flags to capture and hold.
- koth: Headquarters, a moving objective that one team defends.
- sab: Sabotage, a single bomb that both teams fight over.
- sd: Search and Destroy, one life per round, the competitive favourite.
Limits follow a simple pattern: scr_ plus the game type plus scorelimit or timelimit, for example scr_war_scorelimit or scr_sd_timelimit. Set scr_hardcore to 1 for hardcore rules, with a minimal HUD, friendly fire and far less health. Many public servers run a hardcore rotation on one server and a standard one on another, so players can choose.
Building a Map Rotation That Works
The rotation is a single line in server.cfg. It alternates the word gametype with a mode and the word map with a map name, and the server works through it from left to right before starting again.
- Pick the maps that suit your slot count: Shipment and Killhouse for small chaotic lobbies, Overgrown, Bog and District for 32 players.
- Write each one as gametype war map mp_crash, gametype dom map mp_backlot and so on.
- Paste the line into sv_mapRotation in the config editor and save.
- Restart, then use the rcon map_rotate command to check that each entry loads.
A rotation fails on the first bad entry, so check spelling carefully. Map file names start with mp_, such as mp_crossfire, mp_vacant or mp_strike. Custom maps from usermaps use whatever name their author gave them, and every player needs the map files, so allow downloads when you add them.
Admin, RCON and Keeping Order
CoD4 has no built-in admin list. Instead, anyone with the RCON password can control the server from the in-game console. That makes the password the key to the whole server, so share it only with admins you trust, and change it if someone leaves the clan.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| rcon login yourpassword | Authenticates you for the session |
| rcon status | Lists players with their slot numbers |
| rcon clientkick 5 | Kicks the player in slot 5 |
| rcon map mp_bog | Changes straight to a map |
| rcon map_rotate | Skips to the next entry in the rotation |
| rcon fast_restart | Restarts the current round |
Bigger communities often add an admin bot that reads the server log and gives each admin their own level. Those tools run on your side and talk to the server over RCON, so nothing has to change on the host. The panel's web console sends the same commands when you are away from the game.
Mods, Custom Maps and Fast Downloads
Server mods are the reason many CoD4 communities still exist. A mod sits in its own folder under mods, and the server loads it when you set fs_game to that path. Custom maps are simpler: each goes in a folder under usermaps and is then added to the rotation by name.
- Upload the mod folder with the File Manager or FTP; large packs go faster over FTP.
- Set fs_game to mods/ followed by the folder name, then restart.
- Turn on sv_allowDownload so players who lack the files can fetch them.
- For quicker joins, upload the same files to web space and set sv_wwwDownload and sv_wwwBaseURL.
- Read the console log after the restart; most mod problems show up there in the first minute.
Keep public servers on sv_pure 1 so players cannot join with altered game files. If a mod's own instructions say otherwise, follow them, and check the setting again after every mod change.
Choosing Slots and Resources
The slot count should follow the maps you love. Most CoD4 maps were built for 12v12 or smaller, and a full 64 player server on Shipment is chaos by design. For a clan that scrims, 18 slots covers two teams plus a few spectators. A public Team Deathmatch server is happiest at 24, and 32 suits a rotation of the bigger maps.
Memory is not a concern with this game, which is why every plan carries the same free 5GB tier. Processor speed matters more, because the server simulates every bullet and grenade each frame. Our servers run at 5.0GHz as standard, with faster options at checkout if you host a very busy mod server.
Start smaller than you think. You can step up to a bigger slot size from the client area at any time, and the server keeps all of its files.
What to Compare Before You Rent a CoD4 Server
Classic game servers can look identical on paper. These details decide whether yours feels right on a busy Friday.
- Game versionCheck the host runs 1.7 for Steam players and can offer 1.0 if your group still plays it.
- Full config accessYou should be able to edit server.cfg yourself and set your own RCON password, not just fill in a form.
- File access for modsMods and usermaps need FTP or a file manager. Without them, the best part of CoD4 is out of reach.
- Location and pingTest latency from where your players live. In a twitch shooter, ping matters more than any hardware figure.
- CPU clock speedThe server runs on one fast core. A high clock keeps hit registration crisp when the lobby is full.
- Price per slotCompare what each extra slot costs, and whether RAM you will never use is padding the price.
- Billing termsLook for monthly billing without a contract, and check for setup fees.
