Now 64-bit

The September 2026 Update: 64-bit GMod Servers

Facepunch released the September 2026 Update on 16 September. Its headline change matters directly to server owners: 64-bit binaries for the Windows dedicated server.

Release29 November 200664-bit update16 September 2026Hotfix17 September 2026

01

64-bit dedicated servers

Facepunch says 64-bit builds lower the risk of running out of 32-bit address space and crashing on heavy servers or with many addons installed.

02

Workshop IDs in a file

From version 2026.09.22, the Facepunch wiki documents cfg/srcds_workshop_ids.txt, a list of Workshop IDs the server downloads and mounts, alongside or instead of a collection.

03

More content out of the box

Since the July 2025 Update most Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 Episodic content ships with GMod, so players no longer need those games for community maps that use it. Maps and voice files are still excluded.

04

New mountable games

The April 2026 Update added Black Mesa and Military Conflict: Vietnam as mountable games, and September 2026 added Insurgency (2014). Players need to own them to use their content.

Gamemodes & addons

Gamemodes and Workshop Addons for Garry's Mod Server Hosting

On Garry's Mod the gamemode is the game. Sandbox is the default, and everything else, from detective rounds to city roleplay, is a gamemode or addon loaded by the server.

Sandbox

Facepunch's physics sandbox with no set goals: spawn props, weld them into contraptions and pose characters. The default for a build server.

Trouble in Terrorist Town

A detective tries to solve a murder while the guilty players cover their tracks. TTT has its own section on the Facepunch wiki, and the server loads it as the terrortown gamemode.

DarkRP

A community-made roleplay gamemode, not part of the base game. Install it from the GameModes section of our Mod Manager and set darkrp as the gamemode.

Workshop collections

Collect your addons into a public or unlisted Steam Workshop collection. The server downloads and mounts the whole collection, nested ones included, at every start.

Content for players

When the current map or gamemode is in your collection, the server marks it for players to download automatically. Other addon content can be offered through the Workshop or FastDL.

Updates on your terms

Addons update when the server starts. Set host_workshop_autoupdate to 0 to freeze them, accepting that players may then hit mismatched map versions.

Memory for addons

RAM for Garry's Mod Server Hosting: How Much You Need

Facepunch does not publish a memory figure for the dedicated server, but its own update notes name heavy servers and many addons as the pressure point. So memory rises with each plan, from 5GB on 16 slots to 20GB on 64, and you only pay more if you pick a bigger tier at checkout.

  • Sandbox or TTT with friends

    Plan: 16 Slots
    RAM included: 5GB

When to add more: Rarely, unless the collection grows past a few hundred items.

  • Public TTT or Prop Hunt

    Plan: 24 Slots
    RAM included: 8GB

When to add more: When you add large map packs or many player models.

  • Starter DarkRP or a busy build server

    Plan: 32 Slots
    RAM included: 12GB

When to add more: If the memory graph sits near the limit on busy evenings.

  • Established roleplay community

    Plan: 48 Slots
    RAM included: 16GB

When to add more: Heavy vehicle and weapon packs often want 20GB or more.

  • Large public server

    Plan: 64 Slots
    RAM included: 20GB

When to add more: Go to 24GB or 32GB for very large addon collections.

RAM tiers on the order form: 5GB, 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. You can change tier later from the client area and your files stay where they are.

Before you build

Garry's Mod Server Hosting Essentials Before You Order

Five things that make the first evening go smoothly.

  1. Get a Game Server Login Token

Facepunch calls the token mandatory and says servers without one are penalised in ranking. Create it on Steam and add it with sv_setsteamaccount.

  2. Build your collection first

Make the Workshop collection public or unlisted before launch, or the server cannot read it.

  3. Know your gamemode folder name

The gamemode setting uses the folder name, such as sandbox or terrortown. For Workshop gamemodes the addon page usually says what it is.

  4. Set a location flag

sv_location takes a country code like gb or us and shows that flag in the server browser, which helps local players pick you.

  5. Plan for addon updates

Addon authors update on their own schedule. Snapshot the server before big changes so a bad update is a quick rollback.

Answers

Garry's Mod Server Hosting Questions

Quick answers to what new GMod server owners ask us.

Getting started

How quickly is my Garry's Mod server ready?

It is built automatically once payment clears and the login details arrive by email. Most people are spawning props within a few minutes.

Can you move my server from another host?

Yes. Choose the free Migrate Old Host Saved Progress add-on when you order, then open a support ticket and our team moves your files across.

Which location should I choose?

Run the ping test on this page from your own PC. Every one of the 9 locations costs the same, so the lowest ping for most players wins.

Do players need to own other games?

Less often than before. Since the July 2025 Update most Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 Episodic content comes with GMod. Maps from those games, and content from other mountable games, still need the game itself.

Gamemodes and addons

How do I add Workshop addons?

Put the addons in a Steam Workshop collection and copy its ID. In the Commandline Manager, create a new profile and fill authkey with your Steam API key and host_workshop_collection with the collection ID. Run Steam Update, then start the server.

How do I install DarkRP?

Stop the server, install DarkRP from the GameModes section of the Mod Manager, then open Configuration Files, edit the start file and choose darkrp as the gamemode. Start the server again. DarkRP is a community gamemode, so its add-ons and jobs are set up through its own config files.

Can I run Trouble in Terrorist Town?

Yes. Set the gamemode to terrortown and load a TTT map. Many TTT servers add extra maps and weapons through a Workshop collection.

Can I stop addons updating on their own?

Yes. Setting host_workshop_autoupdate to 0 stops the automatic update at start-up. Facepunch warns this can leave you on an older map version than players have, so use it with care.

Performance and updates

How much RAM does a GMod server need?

It depends on the addons more than the players. Our plans run from 5GB on 16 slots to 20GB on 64 slots, and the order form goes up to 32GB for very heavy collections.

Is the server 64-bit?

Facepunch's September 2026 Update brought 64-bit binaries to the Windows dedicated server, which it says lowers the risk of memory crashes on heavy, addon-rich servers. Run Steam Update to stay on the current build.

What happens when Garry's Mod updates?

Facepunch announces most updates a week ahead and says whether old servers stay joinable. Run Steam Update or turn on automatic updates, and check your addons still load in the console afterwards.

Billing

How much does Garry's Mod server hosting cost?

The 16 slot plan is the cheapest preset, at €9.12 a month. The plans table lists every plan for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and longer cycles cost less per month.

Can I pick a slot count that is not shown?

Yes. The order form has a slider from 10 to 100 slots, and you can change slots, RAM and other upgrades later from the client area.

How a Garry's Mod Server Works

Facepunch describes Garry's Mod as a physics sandbox with no predefined aims. That openness is exactly why servers matter. Each server decides what kind of game its players get, through two settings: the gamemode, which sets the rules, and the map, which sets the stage. The same install can be a quiet building server one week and a frantic detective game the next.

Gamemodes live as folders, either in garrysmod/gamemodes on the server or inside an addon, including Workshop addons. You choose one with the gamemode setting, for example sandbox, and a starting map with the map setting, for example gm_construct. To swap later, change the gamemode and then change the map with changelevel, which also reloads the current one.

Running the dedicated server at home is possible, as Facepunch's wiki explains with SteamCMD. Hosting it in a data centre gives you a fixed address, an upload speed that can serve addons to dozens of players, DDoS filtering and backups, without leaving your own PC on overnight.

Building a Workshop Collection for Your Server

The cleanest way to manage addons is a Steam Workshop collection. The server reads the collection at start-up, downloads anything new, updates what has changed and mounts it all. Collections can be nested, so you can keep maps, weapons and player models in separate sub-collections and link them from one master list.

  1. Create a collection on the Steam Workshop and set it to public or unlisted. A private collection cannot be read by the server.
  2. Copy the collection ID, the number at the end of the collection's web address.
  3. Get a personal Steam Web API key and keep it private.
  4. In the Commandline Manager, create a new profile and fill in authkey with the API key and host_workshop_collection with the collection ID.
  5. Press Steam Update, wait for it to finish, then start the server and watch the console as the addons download.

Facepunch now documents a second route too: from version 2026.09.22 the server can read a plain list of Workshop IDs from cfg/srcds_workshop_ids.txt, on its own or together with a collection. It is handy for a handful of server-only addons you would rather not publish in a collection.

Choosing a Gamemode: Sandbox, TTT, DarkRP and Others

GamemodeFolder nameWhere it comes fromGood starting plan
SandboxsandboxFacepunch, the default mode16 or 24 slots
Trouble in Terrorist TownterrortownDocumented on the Facepunch wiki24 slots
DarkRPdarkrpCommunity gamemode, in our Mod Manager32 slots or more
Workshop gamemodes such as Prop HuntSee the addon pageCommunity, through a collectionDepends on the mode

Sandbox suits groups who want to build and mess about. TTT is a round-based murder mystery, as the Steam store puts it, with a detective chasing criminals who try to hide what they did, so it needs enough people for the guessing to work. DarkRP is a community roleplay mode, usually run on a city map, and roleplay servers tend to carry the largest addon packs of all. If your RP crowd wants a modern city with cars, jobs and police chases, FiveM server hosting brings the same kind of roleplay to GTA V.

If you plan to tweak a bundled gamemode such as TTT, Facepunch's wiki recommends copying it under a new folder name rather than editing the original, because a game update can overwrite your changes. The copy can still report itself as the original in the server browser.

You are not locked into one choice. Many communities run a second launch profile for events, such as a TTT night on a server that is normally Sandbox, and switch back the next morning. Keep each mode's addons in its own sub-collection so the server only loads what the active gamemode needs.

Memory, Addons and the 64-bit Server

In Garry's Mod, players are rarely what fills the memory. Content is. Every model, texture, map and Lua script the server loads stays in memory while the map runs, so a modest player count with a huge RP pack can need more than a busy Sandbox server. That is why our plans add memory step by step: 5GB on 16 slots, 8GB on 24, 12GB on 32, 16GB on 48 and 20GB on 64.

Facepunch's September 2026 Update is good news here. Until then the Windows server was a 32-bit program, and the update notes say the new 64-bit binaries reduce the risk of running out of 32-bit address space and crashing on heavy servers or with many addons. Make sure your server is on the latest build with Steam Update to benefit.

  • Trim the collection: remove addons nobody uses. Every one adds start-up time, memory and download size.
  • Watch for duplicates: two weapon packs that ship the same models waste memory and can clash.
  • Restart on a schedule: a daily restart in the quiet hours clears out anything a long session has piled up.
  • Test big packs first: add a large vehicle or map pack on a quiet evening and watch the memory graph before a busy weekend.

Use the memory graph in the panel as your guide. If it sits close to the limit during your busiest hour, move up a tier from the client area; the order form goes up to 32GB, and your files stay in place.

The Token, Server Browser and Privacy Settings

Facepunch's hosting guide calls a Game Server Login Token mandatory and says servers that skip it are penalised in the server ranking. Create the token on Steam for Garry's Mod and add it with sv_setsteamaccount.

  • sv_location: a two-letter country code such as gb or us, up to five characters, which shows a flag beside your server. eu shows the European Union flag.
  • hide_server 1: keeps the server out of the browser, useful while you build and test a new RP map.
  • maxplayers: set by your plan's slot count.
  • -p2p: a launch option for peer-to-peer mode, which a hosted server with its own address normally does not need.

Add server rules and a loading screen through your gamemode or addons, and give staff sub-user logins in the panel rather than sharing the main account.

Getting Content to Your Players Without Errors

Purple checkerboards and big red ERROR models mean a player is missing content the server is using. Lua files are not the issue: Facepunch's wiki notes they reach players through a separate process with no setup. Models, materials, sounds and maps are what need delivering, and there are three ways to do it.

MethodHow it worksSpeed
Workshop downloadMark Workshop addons with resource.AddWorkshop in a server-side Lua fileAs fast as the player's connection, whole packs at once
FastDLA separate web server set in sv_downloadurl, files marked with resource.AddFileFast, but one file at a time
Download from the game serversv_allowdownload 1 plus resource.AddFileVery slow, around 64kb/s, and open to abuse

For most servers the Workshop route wins. Facepunch also warns against generator websites that mark every addon for download, including Lua-only ones, because that only makes joining slower. Mark the addons that actually contain models, materials or sounds, and leave the rest alone.

Moving an Existing Server to Gaming Deluxe

Established communities rarely start from scratch. An RP server can hold years of player data, configs and custom jobs, and losing any of it means angry regulars. When you order, the form offers a free Migrate Old Host Saved Progress add-on: tick it, open a support ticket after the server is set up, and our team moves your files from the old host for you.

Prefer to do it yourself? Download the garrysmod folder's addons, cfg, data and gamemodes content from the old server, upload it over SFTP, copy your launch settings into the Commandline Manager and add your token. Start the server with the players locked out, check the console for errors, then announce the new address.

Updates, Beta Branches and Rolling Back

Facepunch usually posts an update notice about a week before release and says whether existing servers can still be joined. The April 2026 Update, for example, required servers to update before players could join and warned about binary modules, while September 2026 stayed compatible with older servers. Read the notice, take a snapshot, then update.

The dedicated server also has beta branches, including dev and prerelease, for testing upcoming changes. Facepunch notes that removing the beta option alone does not switch back; you have to select the public branch again. For a live community, staying on the public branch is the safe default.

When something does break, the Backup Manager restores the snapshot you took before the change, and we keep offsite copies of the last 7 days as a second safety net.

What to Compare Before You Rent a GMod Server

Garry's Mod servers live or die by their addons, so compare the parts that handle them.

  1. Memory as the server growsCheck the RAM in each plan and the cost to step up. Heavy collections need it far more than extra slots do.
  2. Workshop supportYou should be able to set authkey and host_workshop_collection yourself, without a ticket.
  3. Gamemode installsSee which gamemodes can be installed for you, and whether you still have full file access for the rest.
  4. Migration helpMoving an established RP server is fiddly. Ask whether the host will move the files for you.
  5. Backups you can restoreAn addon update can break a server overnight. Make sure you can roll back from the panel.
  6. Billing termsCompare monthly and longer cycles, and look for setup fees and minimum terms.
