What Breakthrough Added to Allied Assault
Breakthrough is an expansion for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, built for EA by TKO Software. Where the base game is remembered for Omaha Beach and the push through France, Breakthrough moves the fighting south. Its campaign puts you in the boots of US Army Sergeant John Baker, from the battles at Kasserine Pass in North Africa to the race for Messina in Sicily and the defence of Monte Battaglia in Italy.
For a server owner the important part is that Breakthrough is its own multiplayer game. It shares the engine and the feel of Allied Assault, but its servers, maps and players are separate. A clan that plays Breakthrough is choosing dusty open ground, Italian villages and its own mode list, and its server has to run the expansion, not the base game.
Where the Game Stands in 2026
EA's online service list gives 30 June 2014 as the end date for Allied Assault on PC and Mac, and the line explicitly includes Breakthrough and Spearhead. Since then there has been no publisher-run listing or matchmaking. GOG still sells the three games together as the War Chest, but its store page is clear that the publisher no longer supports the multiplayer servers and that LAN is the only official option.
- Online play: through servers that players and clans host themselves, joined by address.
- Buying the game: the War Chest on GOG, with Allied Assault, Spearhead and Breakthrough, supported on Windows.
- Updates: none expected. The game you set up today is the game you will run next year.
That last point is good news for an admin. There are no surprise patches that break mods or force everyone to update on the same night, so the time you spend on a clean config pays off for as long as your group keeps playing.
Breakthrough, Spearhead or the Base Game
Before you order, make sure your group is actually playing Breakthrough. The three games look alike in a server list but cannot share a server, and a player who launches the wrong one will simply fail to connect.
| Your group plays | Order this server | Players need |
|---|---|---|
| Allied Assault | Medal of Honor: Allied Assault | The base game |
| Spearhead | Medal of Honor: Spearhead | The base game and Spearhead |
| Breakthrough | Medal of Honor: Breakthrough (this page) | The base game and Breakthrough |
The War Chest bundles all three, so a group that bought it can run any of them. Some communities keep two servers, one for each expansion, and move players between them depending on the night.
Picking a Slot Count
Buy for your busiest regular night. Six against six suits clan scrims and training, so 12 slots is enough for a competitive team. A group that meets weekly with a few friends of friends is comfortable on 18. The more open maps play better with 24, and 32 is for public servers, reunions and events where people turn up you have not seen in years.
The order form sells sizes between our four plans and above them, up to 64 slots, so an odd number is no problem. Memory does not change with the slot count: every plan includes 5GB, which is far more than this server needs. If your community grows, upgrade from the client area and the server keeps its files and settings.
Getting Players Connected Without an Official List
With EA's listing gone, the most dependable way in is the direct address. The panel shows your server's IP and port; share both wherever your players already talk, pinned so new members find it.
- Copy the address: Take the IP and port from the panel's connection details.
- Post it once, pin it: Put it in your Discord, forum or group chat with a line saying it is the Breakthrough server.
- Connect from the game: Players start Breakthrough and connect to that address from the multiplayer menu or the console.
- Keep the address stable: Your server keeps the same address for as long as you have it, so the pinned post never goes stale.
Configs, Rotations and Custom Maps
Running a Quake III era server is mostly plain text. The server config holds the hostname, the game and admin passwords, the mode, time and score limits and the map list. Edit it in the File Manager, save, restart, and the change is live.
- Stop the server in the panel.
- Upload any custom maps over SFTP into the folder their readme names.
- Add the new maps to the rotation in the config.
- Start the server and watch the console for files it cannot find.
- Join yourself and play one round on each new map before you announce it.
Every custom map has to be on the players' PCs too. Collect the files your server uses in one archive and link it next to the server address, so a new recruit can be ready in one download.
Admins, Passwords and Keeping Order
Set the rcon password before you hand out the address and share it only with people you trust with the whole server. Change it whenever an admin steps down. For restarts and file edits, give co-admins their own sub user login in the panel rather than your account details.
Write your server rules where players see them before they join: team balance, sniper limits, spawn camping, language in chat. Old communities run on goodwill, and clear rules keep a public server pleasant for the people who keep coming back.
Keeping a Breakthrough Server Healthy for Years
Because the game no longer changes, the main risks come from your own edits. Take a snapshot before every change to the config or the map list, and keep a copy of the last version that worked. Our offsite backups keep the last 7 days as a safety net, restorable from the panel.
A nightly restart at a quiet hour keeps a long-running server fresh. If you are moving from another host, download your config and custom maps there, upload them here, and the server picks them up on the next start. Our support team is available around the clock if something refuses to load.
What to Compare Before You Rent a Breakthrough Server
Old games attract bargain offers. These points decide whether the server is still running happily next year.
- The right gameMake sure the host sells a Breakthrough server specifically, not only the base game.
- A fixed addressWith no official list, an address that never changes is worth more than any extra.
- Full file accessConfigs and custom maps need SFTP and a file manager.
- Restorable backupsCheck that you can roll back yourself without opening a ticket.
- Location and pingTest from your own PC before you buy.
- Billing termsLook for setup fees and minimum terms, and compare monthly with longer cycles.

How this guide was made: researched from GOG's War Chest page, EA's online service shutdown list and EA's game page for Allied Assault, drafted with AI assistance, checked against our live order form for every plan, price and location, and reviewed by Matthew Griffin before publishing. EA has no current page for Breakthrough itself, so we only state what those sources confirm. Spotted something out of date? Tell us.
