What RedM Is and Who Makes It
RedM is a modification for Red Dead Redemption 2 that lets people play multiplayer on customised dedicated servers. Its site describes it as the original community-driven and source-available RDR2 multiplayer project, powered by the Cfx framework that has existed in various forms since 2014.
Cfx.re, the team behind RedM and FiveM, officially became part of Rockstar Games on 11 August 2023. Its announcement said the partnership covers the FiveM and RedM platforms and that day-to-day operations would carry on as before. RedM's site today carries Rockstar Games' copyright and privacy pages. For the GTA V side of the same platform, see our FiveM server hosting: the same FXServer and txAdmin, set in Los Santos.
For players, joining is simple: own Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, download the RedM client from redm.net and pick a server. For owners, the work is in the server: the resources, the framework, the rules and the staff who keep a town running.
First Login: Linking txAdmin
Your RedM server comes ready for txAdmin, Cfx.re's web-based server manager. The first job is linking it to your Cfx.re account, which takes a few minutes.
- Start the server in our game panel and press Open txAdmin Panel, accepting the browser warning.
- Press Web Console in our panel and refresh the txAdmin page; the PIN appears for you to copy.
- Paste the PIN into txAdmin and press Link Account, then sign in with your Cfx.re details.
- Choose a txAdmin password, accept the rules and press Register. Your txAdmin username is your Cfx.re username.
- Press Go to the setup page, give the server a name and continue to the recipe step.
The Recipe, the Licence Key and the Endpoints
Under Popular Recipes, choose CFX Default RedM for a clean base, keep the default data location and press Recipe Deployer. Review the recipe and continue to the step that asks for a licence key.
- Press Keymaster, sign in with your Cfx.re account and open New Server.
- Generate a licence key, copy it and paste it into txAdmin, then press Run Recipe.
- In our panel, copy the IP:PORT from Connection Info.
- In txAdmin, replace the default 0.0.0.0:30120 in both endpoint fields with that address.
- Press Save & Run Server and watch the console as the server starts.
The endpoint step is the one people skip, and our setup guide is blunt about it: the server will not work without the correct IP and port. If a fresh server refuses to appear, check the endpoints before anything else.
The server.cfg Lines That Matter on RedM
RedM runs on the same FXServer as FiveM, so Cfx.re's server documentation covers both. A handful of lines in server.cfg decide how a RedM server behaves.
| Line | What it does |
|---|---|
| set gamename rdr3 | Tells FXServer to host RedM rather than FiveM |
| sv_licenseKey | Your licence key from Keymaster |
| endpoint_add_tcp and endpoint_add_udp | The address the server listens on, your IP:PORT |
| sv_maxClients | The player limit; 48 is the most RedM allows without Element Club |
| ensure | Starts a resource, or restarts it if it is already running |
| sv_enforceGameBuild | Picks the game build players must use; the docs list build 1491 for RedM |
Order matters: ensure a dependency before the resources that need it. sv_enforceGameBuild can only be set at start-up, so restart after changing it. Server names, descriptions and icons have moved to the Cfx.re Portal, so set them there rather than in the file.
Player Slots, OneSync and Element Club
RedM's hosting page says a server supports up to 48 players by default using OneSync Infinity. That is the limit every one of our plans is built around. Going higher is a matter for your Cfx.re account, through an Element Club subscription.
| Element Club tier | Price shown by Cfx.re | Most players with OneSync Infinity |
|---|---|---|
| None | Free | 48 |
| Argentum | $15 a month plus VAT | 64 |
| Aurum | $25 a month plus VAT | 128 |
| Platinum | $50 a month plus VAT | 1024 |
Cfx.re notes that new perks can take up to six hours to activate after you subscribe. Raise sv_maxClients only once they show, and remember that more players need more memory: an Element Club server is the moment to look at the 24GB plan or the 32GB tier.
Choosing a Framework for Your Town
The CFX Default RedM recipe gives you a working server with no roleplay systems on top. Some communities build their own from there; others start from a framework that already handles characters, jobs and money, such as VORP Core, which our setup guide mentions as an alternative.
- Start clean if you have a developer and a clear idea of the town you want.
- Start from a framework if you want to open quickly and customise as you go.
- Read the framework's own documentation before installing: frameworks are community projects with their own requirements.
- Test on a quiet evening, not the night you announce the launch.
Whatever you choose, take a Backup Manager snapshot first. Switching frameworks later is a rebuild, so it is worth deciding before the first players create characters.
Growing a Roleplay Server Without Breaking It
Most RedM servers grow one script at a time, and most outages come from the same place: a new resource, or an update to an old one, that does not get along with the rest. A little routine prevents nearly all of it.
- Snapshot the server in the Backup Manager.
- Add one resource or one update, with an ensure line in the right order.
- Restart through txAdmin and read the console for errors.
- Join and test the feature yourself before telling players.
- Keep notes of what changed, so a rollback is quick if trouble shows up later.
Schedule restarts for your quietest hour with Scheduled Tasks, and give each member of staff their own panel sub-user. Offsite copies of the last seven days are a second safety net behind your own snapshots.
Which RedM Plan Fits Your Server
Because every plan has 48 slots, the choice is about how much your server loads. Streamed assets, such as maps, interiors and clothing, and long resource lists use the most memory.
| Stage | Plan | Typical contents |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | 48 Slots, 10GB | Default recipe and a few scripts |
| Established town | 48 Slots, 16GB | A framework with add-on jobs and systems |
| Large community | 48 Slots, 24GB | Custom maps, clothing and a long resource list |
You can move between memory tiers from the client area without losing files, so start where you are today and upgrade when the console or your players tell you to.
What to Compare Before Renting a RedM Server
The server software is the same everywhere. These are the differences that shape your town.
- txAdmin accessCheck txAdmin is available and easy to reach, with the PIN and endpoints explained.
- Memory for your resourcesCompare the RAM included, not just the slot count, since every RedM server starts at 48.
- Single-core speedScripts lean on one fast core. Ask what clock speed the server runs at.
- Backups you controlSnapshots before updates and offsite copies make a bad script a small problem.
- Ping to your playersTest the locations from where your community lives before choosing.
