Unreal Tournament 2004 Server Hosting Plans and Prices

UT2004 barely notices modern hardware, so every plan carries the same 5GB and the price simply follows the slot count. Slots are sold one at a time between 16 and 32, so an odd size such as 18 or 26 is on the order form too. Monthly billing has no minimum term.

Your server room

Your Unreal Tournament 2004 Server Hosting Control Panel

Running UT2004 well comes down to a few ini settings, a map list and the right packages in the right folders. The panel puts all of it in a browser tab, with no remote desktop and no FTP client needed for small edits.

Unreal Tournament 2004 in 2026: OldUnreal and Patch 3374

Epic released UT2004 on 16 March 2004 and no longer sells it: the Steam page now says it is no longer available. In 2025 OldUnreal reached an agreement with Epic to take over maintenance of the Unreal Tournament code base, and its UT2004 patch 3374 has been in public preview since 12 February 2026.

Release16 March 2004Patch 3374Preview 23 · 23 July 2026First preview12 February 2026

01

Approved, not official

OldUnreal's README says the project was approved by Epic Games but is not an official Epic project, and has not been reviewed or tested by Epic. Think of it as the community's maintained version of the game.

02

Installers for new players

On Windows, OldUnreal's installer downloads the original Editor's Choice Edition disc image from its own file servers, with archive.org only as a fallback, then installs and patches it. Linux and macOS builds are on the project's GitHub page.

03

Preview builds, served carefully

Preview 23 arrived on 23 July 2026 and was announced as the last public preview before the release candidate stage. It fixed a regression that made CPU use on servers creep upwards. Back up your files before moving a server to any new build.

04

Master server settings

For servers on the new patch, the README says to replace IpDrv.MasterServerUplink with IpDrv.MasterServerLauncher and to keep at least one MasterServerList entry, whether or not the server lists itself.

Maps & mutators

Maps, Mutators and Mods for Unreal Tournament 2004 Server Hosting

Two decades of custom maps and mods are the best reason to run your own UT2004 server. Everything goes on through the File Manager or SFTP, and the mutator line decides how each match plays.

Content

Custom maps

Upload map files to the server's Maps folder and add them to the rotation for the game type you run. Keep a list of what you added so you can clean up later.

Mutators

A mutator changes the rules of a match without a new game type. Load the ones you want on the launch line, restart, and every player gets the same rules.

Bots for quiet hours

Bots can keep a server busy until real players arrive. OldUnreal's previews fixed bots chasing ammo when they did not need it and racing teammates to super pickups.

Rules and players

Ten game modes

The game ships with ten modes, among them Onslaught and Assault with their vehicles, Capture the Flag, Double Domination, Deathmatch and Mutant.

Players on any desktop

OldUnreal's patch runs on Windows 7 or later and 64-bit Linux, on Intel or ARM CPUs, and on macOS Catalina (10.15) or later, so a mixed group can get the game running.

Anti-cheat add-ons

UT2004 anti-cheat has always been community made. The first 3374 preview did not work on servers running AntiTCC, and OldUnreal promised a compatible version, so check yours before you update.

Memory, kept simple

RAM for Unreal Tournament 2004 Server Hosting

Epic's minimum spec for playing UT2004 was a 1GHz processor and 128MB of RAM. The dedicated server is just as modest, so every plan includes the free 5GB tier and you pay for slots alone. Even a 32 player Onslaught server leaves most of that memory unused.

  • Duels and small Deathmatch

    Plan: 16 Slots
    Memory: 5GB

Headroom: Plenty, even with a long custom map list.

  • Public CTF with spectators

    Plan: 20 Slots
    Memory: 5GB

Headroom: Yes, with room to spare.

  • Onslaught and Assault teams

    Plan: 24 Slots
    Memory: 5GB

Headroom: Yes, vehicles and large maps included.

  • Full 32 player events

    Plan: 32 Slots
    Memory: 5GB

Headroom: Normally yes. Larger tiers are on the order form if you load very large mod packs.

Memory tiers on the order form: 5GB, 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. You can change tier later from the client area and the server keeps its files.

Built for fraggers

Unreal Tournament 2004 Server Hosting Features

What matters most once the server is yours.

Your rotation, your rules

Pick the game type, the map list and the mutators, from tight Deathmatch to vehicle-heavy Onslaught.

Bring your map pack

Upload the maps and packages your community has collected over the years and keep them in one place.

Bots when it is quiet

Let bots fill the gaps so the first players online still get a proper match.

Snapshots before changes

Back up before a new mutator or map pack and roll back in a few clicks if something breaks.

DDoS protection

Attack traffic is filtered before it reaches the server, so a sore loser cannot end the match early.

5.0GHz cores

A fast core keeps the server steady when 32 players and their vehicles share one map.

Before the first match

Unreal Tournament 2004 Server Hosting Essentials Before You Order

Four things worth knowing before the first match.

  1. Know your players' build

Older installs are on Epic's patch 3369, which OldUnreal's README still asks for before a manual install of its own patch. Players who used OldUnreal's installer get the 3374 preview. Check that everyone can join before match night.

  2. Set an admin password

Put an admin password in the server ini before the server goes public, so only your admins can kick, ban or change maps.

  3. Listing and direct joins

If the server does not show in the in-game browser, check the master server entries in the ini. Players can always join with the IP and port shown in the panel.

  4. Keep the last good ini

Copy your working ini before big changes. A misspelt package name can stop a map loading, and the old file turns a broken evening into a quick fix.

Answers

Unreal Tournament 2004 Server Hosting Questions

Short answers to what UT2004 server owners ask us most.

Getting started

How quickly is my UT2004 server ready?

It is created automatically when your payment clears, and the panel login arrives by email. Most people are on their own server within a few minutes.

Can I still buy Unreal Tournament 2004?

Not from Epic: the Steam page says the game is no longer available. OldUnreal, the community team Epic approved to maintain it, offers full-game installers that fetch the original Editor's Choice Edition disc image and patch it.

Which location should I choose?

Run the ping test on this page from your own PC and pick the lowest result for most of your players. All 9 locations cost the same.

Players, modes and content

How many players can a UT2004 server hold?

Our order form sells 16 to 32 slots, one at a time. The Steam description talks about battling up to 32 other players online, so 32 slots covers the biggest Onslaught nights.

Which game modes can I run?

Any of the game's ten modes, including Onslaught, Assault, Capture the Flag, Double Domination, Deathmatch and Mutant. Set the game type and its map list on the server, then restart.

Can I add custom maps and mutators?

Yes. Upload them over SFTP or with the File Manager, add maps to the rotation and mutators to the launch line, then restart. Take a backup first so you can undo it.

Do bots work on a dedicated server?

Yes. Bots can fill the server until real players arrive, and OldUnreal's latest previews fixed several of their choices about pickups and ammo.

Patches and listing

Should my group move to OldUnreal's 3374 patch?

It is still a public preview, with Preview 23 out on 23 July 2026, so test it before relying on it. The first preview worked online except on servers running AntiTCC. If you want your server on a newer build, take a backup and ask our support team to help.

Will my old maps and mods still work?

Content made for the 3369 patch is what the community has used for twenty years, and OldUnreal's notes include fixes for maps that would not load. Test anything unusual on a backup before match night.

Why does my server not appear in the server browser?

Check the master server settings in the ini. OldUnreal's README says a patched server needs IpDrv.MasterServerLauncher and at least one MasterServerList entry. Players can still connect with the IP and port from the panel.

Plans and billing

How much does UT2004 server hosting cost?

The 16 slot plan is the cheapest at £4.80 a month, and every extra slot adds the same small amount. The price does not change between locations.

Why is the RAM the same on every plan?

An Unreal Engine 2 server needs very little memory, so all plans include the free 5GB tier and the price covers slots alone.

Is there a contract?

No. Monthly billing has no minimum term and you can cancel at any time. Terms of 3, 6 and 12 months are also on the order form.

Why UT2004 Still Draws a Crowd

Unreal Tournament 2004 arrived on 16 March 2004 with more than 95 maps, ten game modes and vehicles that fight on land, in the air and in space, from single-seat fighters to five-person vehicles. It sits between the pure arena shooters that came before it and the vehicle sandboxes that came later: one evening can be tight Deathmatch duels, the next a 32 player Onslaught war across a huge map.

What keeps it alive is the people. Clans that met at LAN parties still play together, and two decades of custom maps, mutators and full conversions are out there to run. A dedicated server is where all of that lives: your rotation, your rules and your admins, online whether or not anyone in the group has their PC switched on.

OldUnreal, Epic and the State of the Game

Epic no longer sells UT2004. Its Steam page now carries a notice that the Editor's Choice Edition is no longer available on the Steam store. That could have been the end, but OldUnreal, the group behind the long-running community patches for Unreal and the original Unreal Tournament, reached an agreement with Epic in 2025 to take over maintenance of the Unreal Tournament code base. Its UT2004 repository describes the project as approved by Epic, though not an official Epic project.

Two things came out of that. The first is a set of full-game installers: on Windows the installer downloads the original Editor's Choice Edition disc image, installs the game and patches it to OldUnreal's latest version, while Linux and macOS players get builds from GitHub. The second is patch 3374, announced as the first public UT2004 patch in over 20 years. Preview 9 appeared on 12 February 2026, Preview 17 on 27 March and Preview 23 on 23 July, billed as the last preview before release candidates.

  • Platforms: Windows 7 or later and Linux, both on 64-bit Intel or ARM CPUs, and macOS Catalina (10.15) or later on Intel or Apple Silicon.
  • Server fixes so far: a CPU usage regression on servers (Preview 23), a broken web admin on Windows servers (Preview 17) and new FILECACHE console commands (Preview 22).
  • Known catch: the first preview did not work on servers running the AntiTCC anti-cheat add-on.

Choosing a Game Type for Your Server

A UT2004 server plays one game type at a time, so start with what your community actually enjoys. A mixed rotation can work on a public server, but a server built around one mode is easier to fill with regulars, because people know what they will get when they join.

Our slot suggestions per game type (a guide, not a rule)
Game typeIn one lineSuggested slots
DeathmatchEvery player for themselves16
Capture the FlagTake the enemy flag home while defending yours16 to 24
Double DominationHold two control points together to score16 to 20
OnslaughtVehicle war along a chain of power nodes to the enemy core24 to 32
AssaultOne team attacks a run of objectives, the other defends, then sides swap20 to 32

Big vehicle maps are the reason the larger plans exist. On a crowded Deathmatch map, extra players mostly mean more spawn kills, while Onslaught and Assault maps are built with room for full teams.

How Many Slots You Actually Need

Plan for your busiest night, not your average one. A clan with eight regulars who meet twice a week is well served by 16 slots. A public CTF server that wants spectators and a waiting list needs 20 or 24. Onslaught events are where 32 slots pay off.

Slots are sold one at a time from 16 to 32 on our order form, so an unusual number is fine. Memory does not change with the slot count: every plan has 5GB, many times what an engine designed for 128MB PCs uses. If you outgrow your plan, upgrade from the client area and the server keeps its maps and settings.

Maps, Mutators and the Server Ini

Most of the work of running UT2004 happens in plain text. The server ini holds the server name, the passwords, the master server settings and each mode's limits, such as time and score. The map list sets the rotation for every game type, and the launch line loads the mutators.

  1. Stop the server from the panel.
  2. Upload maps to the Maps folder and code packages to the System folder, over SFTP for anything large.
  3. Add the new maps to the rotation of the game type you run.
  4. Add any mutators to the launch line in the form their readme gives.
  5. Start the server and watch the Web Console for missing package errors.

Keep a copy of your working ini before every change. A single misspelt package name can stop a map loading, and with the last good file to hand the fix takes two minutes instead of an evening.

Getting Listed and Letting Players In

Players find a UT2004 server in two ways: through the in-game server browser, which reads from master servers, or by connecting straight to the IP and port shown in our panel. If the browser does not show your server, the master server section of the ini is the first place to look.

OldUnreal's README is specific about servers on its patch. Remove any mutators or actors that reported to several master servers at once, replace IpDrv.MasterServerUplink with IpDrv.MasterServerLauncher in the [Engine.GameEngine] section, and keep at least one MasterServerList entry under [IpDrv.MasterServerLink], whether or not the server lists itself.

Admins, Passwords and Fair Play

Set an admin password in the ini before the server goes public, and give it only to people you would trust with the server itself. Change it whenever someone leaves the admin team. For extra panel tasks such as restarts, a sub user login is safer than sharing your own account.

Anti-cheat for UT2004 has always come from the community. If your server runs an add-on such as AntiTCC, make sure it supports the game build your players use: OldUnreal noted that its first 3374 preview did not work on servers with AntiTCC and promised a compatible version.

Backups and Moving From Another Host

We keep offsite backups of the last 7 days, and you can restore them from the panel. Take your own snapshot before any big change, such as a new map pack, a mutator update or a move to a newer patch. If you are coming from another host, download your Maps, System and ini files there, upload them here, and the server picks them up on its next start.

What to Compare Before You Rent a UT2004 Server

Old games make it tempting to grab the cheapest offer. These details matter more than the headline price.

  1. Full file accessUT2004 lives on custom maps, mutators and ini edits, so SFTP and a file manager are not optional.
  2. Per-slot pricingLook for slots sold one at a time, so a clan of twelve is not paying for thirty-two.
  3. Locations near your playersRun a ping test first. Instant-hit weapons are unforgiving of lag.
  4. Backups you can restoreCheck you can roll back yourself, without waiting on a ticket.
  5. Help with patchesAsk whether the host will help if your group moves to OldUnreal's 3374 builds.
  6. Billing termsCompare monthly and longer cycles, and look for setup fees and minimum terms.
