Modes & cups

Modes, Cups and Car Rules for Wreckfest 2 Server Hosting

Wreckfest 2 has no modding support yet; Bugbear lists it as coming later in Early Access. What you control today is plenty: the modes, the events in each cup, the points and the cars allowed.

Modes and cups

Racing modes

Banger, Waypoint, Suicide and Chase races, all playable online with up to 24 cars.

Derby modes

Last Man Standing, Deathmatch and Demolition Derby in the game's derby arenas.

Cup playlists

Event playlists are .becl files in JSON format in the server save folder. default_loop.becl holds every event and is a good base.

Cups and car restrictions

server_cup_config.ccnl defines each cup: its playlist, its points and which cars may enter, with a reverse rule flag to ban any car.

Drivers and rules

Steam PC players

Wreckfest 2 is in Early Access on Steam for Windows. Drivers find your server in the in-game server browser.

Memory, sorted

RAM for Wreckfest 2 Server Hosting

Bugbear does not publish memory figures for the dedicated server, and Content Update #9 made the server lighter on CPU. Every plan already has all 24 cars, so memory is the only choice: the free 8GB tier covers a normal lobby, and more gives headroom.

  • Friends and regular lobbies

    Plan: 24 Cars, 8GB
    RAM included: 8GB

When to add more: Not needed for normal use.

  • A busy public server

    Plan: 24 Cars, 12GB
    RAM included: 12GB

When to add more: If the log shows memory warnings when it is full.

  • Events and leagues

    Plan: 24 Cars, 16GB
    RAM included: 16GB

When to add more: Only for unusual setups; future updates may change needs.

RAM tiers on the order form: 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. Change the tier from the client area at any time; your configs stay where they are.

Wreckfest 2 Server Hosting Locations

There are 9 locations to choose from in the UK, France, Germany, the United States and Australia. Contact racing is unforgiving of lag, so pick the site with the best ping for most of your drivers. Since Content Update #9 the in-game server browser also sorts servers by the player's location.

Before the green flag

Wreckfest 2 Server Hosting Essentials

Five things to sort out before the first green flag.

  1. Read Bugbear's config guide

Since Content Update #7 the server ships with SERVER_CONFIG_GUIDE.pdf, Bugbear's own reference for every setting.

  2. Start from default_loop.becl

Copy the example playlist and remove the events you do not want, instead of writing one from scratch.

  3. Set a password if private

Server passwords arrived in the first big update. Use one for league nights.

  4. Turn on file logging

Enable server file logging in the config, so you can look back at what happened in a race.

Answers

Wreckfest 2 Server Hosting FAQ

Questions drivers and league organisers ask about Wreckfest 2 servers.

Ordering and setup

How fast is my Wreckfest 2 server ready?

Setup is automatic once your payment clears, normally within 20 minutes, and the login details arrive by email.

How many players can join?

Up to 24. The Steam store page states that all modes are playable in singleplayer and multiplayer with up to 24 cars, and every plan has all 24 slots.

Which location is best?

The one with the lowest ping for most of your drivers. Use the ping test on this page. All 9 locations cost the same.

Modes, cups and rules

Which modes can my server run?

The current build has Banger, Waypoint, Suicide and Chase races, plus Last Man Standing, Deathmatch and Demolition Derby. All of them work online.

How do cups work?

Players vote for a cup instead of a single event. Each cup uses an event playlist, a .becl file in the server save folder, and is defined in server_cup_config.ccnl with its points and car rules.

Can I limit which cars are allowed?

Yes. Car restrictions are set per cup in server_cup_config.ccnl, and the reverse rule flag lets you disallow any car.

Can I turn off upgrades and tuning?

Yes. Since Content Update #7 car upgrades and tuning can be disabled in the server settings, for spec racing.

Are mods supported?

Not yet. The Steam store page lists modding support among the features coming later in Early Access.

Updates and admin

What happens when Bugbear releases an update?

The server needs the new build as well, or drivers on the updated game cannot join. Use Steam Update in the panel, or ask support.

Who is admin on my server?

Since Content Update #7 a community server promotes the Steam account that launched it to admin by default, if one is available. Bugbear's SERVER_CONFIG_GUIDE.pdf, shipped with the server, covers the admin settings.

When does Wreckfest 2 leave Early Access?

Bugbear has not announced a 1.0 date. The store page says career mode, modding support, more modes, cars and tracks are still to come.

Billing

How much does Wreckfest 2 server hosting cost?

Plans start at £9.90 a month for 24 cars with 8GB of RAM. The plan table shows each memory option for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.

Can I add RAM later?

Yes. Change the memory tier from the client area at any time; your configs and playlists stay in place.

Wreckfest 2 Server Hosting: A Complete Guide

What Wreckfest 2 Offers Online

Wreckfest 2 is Bugbear's sequel to Wreckfest, published by THQ Nordic and in Early Access on Steam since 20 March 2025. Bugbear rebuilt its physics engine for the sequel, with more detailed crashes and component damage, and the cars are what the store page calls old, dented and patched together.

Online, everything scales to 24 cars. With Content Update #9 on 15 October 2026, the game has Banger, Waypoint, Suicide and Chase races, and Last Man Standing, Deathmatch and Demolition Derby in its arenas. The store page lists 21 cars and 3 special vehicles, 15 circuits plus reverse routes, ovals, figure 8s, derby arenas, waypoint maps and suicide races.

A dedicated server turns that into a place. Instead of hoping a public lobby matches your taste, you run the events you like, with the cars you allow, at a location close to your drivers.

Running a Server in Early Access

Early Access means change. Bugbear has released a numbered content update every few months, each adding cars, tracks or modes, and many of them have changed the server too. Multiplayer collisions and deformation are now synchronised between players, race starts are in sync, and dedicated servers use less CPU during races and very little when nobody is connected.

  • Keep the server current: drivers on a new build cannot play on an old server.
  • Back up before updates: cups and playlists are your work; keep a copy before each content update.
  • Read the changelog: Bugbear lists server changes under online and multiplayer headings.
  • Expect gaps: career mode and modding support are still listed as coming later.

How Cups and Playlists Work

Cup Mode arrived in Content Update #5 in December 2025, and Content Update #6 in March 2026 made it the heart of the server. Instead of voting for a single event, players now vote for a cup: a sequence of events with its own points.

FileWhereWhat it defines
*.becl playlistsServer save folderThe events in a cup: event id, game mode and rules
default_loop.beclServer save folderAn example playlist with every event
server_cup_config.ccnlServer filesEach cup's playlist, points and car restrictions

Both formats are JSON, so they are easy to read and edit in the File Manager. Bugbear's developer notes suggest studying the example cup config before writing your own, and starting a playlist from default_loop.becl. Content Update #4 also made the event rotation config changeable at runtime, so you can adjust it without rebuilding the server.

Car Restrictions and Spec Racing

Car restrictions live in each cup's definition, and Bugbear says they can be as fine-grained as you want. A reverse rule flag lets you disallow any car, which is handy for a cup that bans one overpowered vehicle, or one that only allows a single model.

For a level field, combine restrictions with the server setting added in Content Update #7 that disables car upgrades and tuning. Everyone then drives the same car in the same state, and the result depends on driving and on who hits whom first.

  1. Copy the example cup config and give your cup a name.
  2. Point it at a playlist built from default_loop.becl.
  3. Set the point distribution for each position.
  4. Add car restrictions, using the reverse rule where it is shorter.
  5. Restart the server, join and run one event to check it.

Server Settings Worth Knowing

The server is configured in a JSON file, and since Content Update #7 the build ships with SERVER_CONFIG_GUIDE.pdf, Bugbear's own reference for it. A few features are worth switching on early.

FeatureAdded inWhy it helps
Server passwordUpdate #1, March 2025Private league nights

Cup ModeContent Update #5Cups of events with points
Server file loggingContent Update #5A record of every session
Upgrades and tuning offContent Update #7Spec lobbies
Auto-admin for the launching accountContent Update #7Admin rights without extra setup, where available

Server commands such as cup reload, reset_countdown and idle_kick, fixed in Content Update #6 Patch #3, can be sent from the console when you need to step in.

Keeping Your Server Full

Players find servers in the in-game browser, which since Content Update #9 is sorted by the player's location, and since Content Update #1 can be searched by name and sorted by player count. A clear name with your community and the kind of racing helps.

Regular events help even more. A weekly cup night, a derby-only evening or a spec series gives drivers a reason to return. Steam friend invites, added in Content Update #1, make it easy for regulars to pull friends in.

Connections, Ping and Hosting at Home

Bugbear has spent a lot of the Early Access period on online play. Content Update #9 fixed dedicated servers eventually refusing new players, removed false high packet loss warnings and stopped online races starting before everyone was ready. It also added a warning for hosts whose connection may be behind CGNAT, a setup common on home broadband and mobile internet that can make a server hard to reach from outside.

That warning explains why many home-hosted servers never show up for friends. A server in a data centre has a public address and reachable ports from the start, so the question never comes up. It also keeps running when your own PC is off, and your upload is not shared with 23 other cars.
