Squad Updates in 2026: 10.6 and the Console Edition

Squad left Early Access on 23 September 2020 and Offworld still patches it every few weeks. Update 10.6 arrived on 1 October 2026, two hotfixes have followed, and a console version is now in public testing.

Full release23 September 2020Latest hotfix10.6.2 · 15 October 2026PS5 alpha16 to 25 October 2026

01

Update 10.6

A party system for groups of up to 9 in PvP, new anti-stacking rules and team imbalance options for server owners, a queue that respects them, and new map vote defaults for fresh installs.

02

Hotfixes 10.6.1 and 10.6.2

10.6.1 on 7 October shipped as a client and server update, so hosted servers had to update too. 10.6.2 followed on 15 October with more stability work.

03

Fireteam PvE

Update 10.1 on 1 December 2025 added Fireteam, a co-op mode against AI for up to 5 players, built from shorter missions. It is separate from the 100 player PvP game a rented server runs.

04

Console Edition

Squad is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with Secret Mode. A free PS5 technical alpha runs from 16 to 25 October 2026; Offworld has not given a launch date.

Workshop & consoles

Workshop Mods and Consoles on Squad Server Hosting

Squad mods are published on the Steam Workshop and a dedicated server reads them from its own mod folder. Consoles are on the way, but Offworld's FAQ makes clear they will meet PC players only on a specific kind of server.

Workshop mods

One folder per mod

Offworld's wiki places each mod in SquadGame/Plugins/Mods, in a folder named after its Workshop ID. Upload it with SFTP or the File Manager and restart; the log lists every modded map it found.

Players need the same files

Update 10.6 closed a gap that let clients join modded servers without matching files. Players subscribe to the same Workshop items before they connect.

Rebuilt after big patches

When Offworld raises the mod version, as it did with 10.5, older mods can hang on loading until their creators recook them. Check each mod page after an update.

Consoles

Console crossplay is selective

Console players with crossplay on will see eligible PC community servers set up for the console ruleset, plus official console servers. Ordinary PC community servers are not part of that promise.

No mods on console at launch

Offworld's console FAQ says mods will not be available on console at launch, so a modded server stays a PC experience.

Separate progress

The same FAQ confirms there will be no cross-progression between console and PC accounts.

Memory per plan

Memory for Squad Server Hosting, Plan by Plan

Offworld's licensing policy asks licensed hosts for at least 8GB of system memory plus 4GB per game instance, but it does not size a single server by player count. The amounts below are our own sizing: 5GB at 40 slots, 8GB at 60, 12GB at 80 and 16GB at 100.

  • Training nights, seeding, Skirmish layers

    Plan: 40 Slots
    RAM included: 5GB

When to go higher: Only if you load several large Workshop maps.

  • Community server around 30v30

    Plan: 60 Slots
    RAM included: 8GB

When to go higher: Step up to 12GB once the rotation leans on mods.

  • Busy 40v40 nights with a queue

    Plan: 80 Slots
    RAM included: 12GB

When to go higher: Add memory if the console log shows the server short on it during map changes.

  • Full 50v50 on the biggest maps

    Plan: 100 Slots
    RAM included: 16GB

When to go higher: Large faction and vehicle mods can justify 20GB or more.

Memory tiers on the order form: 5GB, 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. Upgrading from the client area keeps every file and setting on the server.

Pre-deployment brief

Squad Server Hosting Essentials Before You Order

Five points that save a community a lot of head-scratching later.

  1. Licensing is Offworld's call

Only licensed servers appear in the main browser tab. Offworld decides on every application through its own portal, with hardware rules and named hosting partners, so a license is never part of any rental.

  2. Below 60 slots means Custom

Offworld's wiki says servers under 60 slots will not be licensed. A 40 slot server is still public, listed in the Custom Servers tab.

  3. Layers, not maps

A level is the map itself; a layer adds the mode, flags and time of day, such as a RAAS or Invasion version. Rotations and votes are built from layer names.

  4. New vote defaults are opt-in

The 10.6 map vote changes apply to new installs only. An existing server keeps its own vote config until you change it.

  5. Ports are already open

Your server's game, query and RCON ports are assigned for you. Players join with the address shown in the panel.

Answers

Squad Server Hosting FAQ

Questions Squad server owners send us most often, answered.

Getting started

How soon can I use my Squad server?

The server is built automatically as soon as payment clears, and your panel login arrives by email.

How do I give myself admin rights?

Open Admins.cfg, define a group with the permissions you want, then add a line such as Admin=YourSteamID64:Admin and restart. The SteamID64 is the 17 digit ID of your Steam account.

How do I set the layer rotation?

Set MapRotationMode in Server.cfg. LayerList plays LayerRotation.cfg in order, LayerList_Vote shows a vote at the end of each match using LayerVoting.cfg, and the Randomized options shuffle the list.

Where will players find my server?

Unlicensed servers show in the Custom Servers tab of the in-game browser. Fill in the Tags line of Server.cfg with language, mode and playstyle tags so filters pick you up.

Licensing

Can my Squad server get a license?

Offworld decides that, not us. Applications go through its Server License Portal, and the policy sets hardware rules, a minimum of 10 admins and public access with no password. Open a ticket and we will help with the details we can supply.

What does a license change?

A licensed server is shown in the primary browser tab and receives a key that goes into License.cfg. It must then follow Offworld's policies on admins, naming, bans and server health.

Do I need a license to play?

No. An unlicensed server runs normally and anyone can join it from the Custom Servers tab, which is also where servers with custom rules and mods are listed.

Mods, consoles and updates

How do I add Workshop mods?

Copy each mod's folder, named by its Workshop ID, into SquadGame/Plugins/Mods with SFTP or the File Manager, then restart. Add the mod's layers to your rotation and ask players to subscribe to the same items.

Can console players join my server?

Offworld's FAQ says console players with crossplay on will see eligible PC community servers made for the console ruleset. There is no launch date for consoles yet, and mods will not be on console at launch.

What should I do when Squad updates?

Run Steam Update in the panel, or schedule it, so the server matches the new client. After larger patches, check that your Workshop mods have been rebuilt before you load them again.

Billing and plans

How much does Squad server hosting cost?

The 40 slot plan is the lowest price at £20.00 a month. The plans table lists each size for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months, and the longer terms are cheaper per month.

Can I move to more slots later?

Yes. Add slots or memory from the client area at any time, then set MaxPlayers in Server.cfg to the new figure and restart.

Do I have to sign a long contract?

No. Monthly billing renews month by month and can be cancelled whenever you like. The 3, 6 and 12 month terms are paid in advance at a lower monthly rate.

Why Squad Communities Run Their Own Server

Squad is built around teamwork: nine-person squads inside 50-person teams, a squad leader on the radio, logistics runs and FOBs that win or lose a flag. That kind of play depends on the people around you, which is why so much of the game happens on community servers with their own rules and regulars rather than on random lobbies.

A server of your own lets the group pick the layers it enjoys, write rules that suit its style, from relaxed to milsim, and keep a trusted admin team on hand. Rented hardware stays online when nobody is at home, gives the community a fixed address, and keeps a 100 player match off anyone's home broadband.

  • Clans and units: private training on chosen layers, then public nights under the clan name.
  • Regional communities: a server close to your players, tagged with up to two languages.
  • Modded groups: faction or map mods that never show up on licensed vanilla servers.

Squad in 2026: Updates That Matter to Server Owners

Squad entered Early Access in December 2015 and reached full release on 23 September 2020. Update 9.0 moved the game to Unreal Engine 5, and since then Offworld has kept a steady rhythm of numbered updates and hotfixes. The Steam store page now lists 13 factions and 24 maps.

  • 10.1, 1 December 2025: Fireteam, the 5 player PvE co-op mode, plus a Mod SDK update.
  • 10.4, 30 April 2026: servers accept multiple RCON connections from the same host, useful for admin tools.
  • 10.5, 15 June 2026: a new mod version number and a fix for players failing to join when tags or rules were set in Server.cfg.
  • 10.5.4 and 10.5.5, September 2026: fixes for vulnerabilities used to crash servers and disrupt queues.
  • 10.6, 1 October 2026: party system, anti-stacking rules, team imbalance options and new map vote defaults.
  • 10.6.1 and 10.6.2, 7 and 15 October 2026: stability fixes, with 10.6.1 also changing the server build.

Slots, Seeding and the Licensed Browser

Squad's browser has two tabs. Licensed servers sit in the primary tab; everything else, including servers with custom rules or mods, is listed under Custom Servers. A license is granted by Offworld through its Server License Portal, never by a host, and the policy is strict: servers must stay public with no password, carry at least 10 admins per server, avoid the word official in their name, run on approved hardware and keep good server health. The policy also notes that virtual machines are not accepted for licensing, and Offworld can refuse any application.

GoalTypical sizeOur plan
Training, events, seeding a new communityUp to 20v2040 Slots
Growing public serverUp to 30v3060 Slots
Established server with a queueUp to 40v4080 Slots
Full-scale battles50v50100 Slots

Seeding is how a Squad server fills: a handful of early players start on small Seed or Skirmish layers until enough people arrive for a full match. The layer vote can switch to a separate low population list for this, covered below. Our knowledge base points license applicants to Offworld's own guide, and our team can help with server details on a ticket.

Server.cfg Settings Worth Knowing

Server.cfg in the ServerConfig folder holds the main options, one per line. Offworld does not overwrite existing config files on update, so new options added in a patch have to be typed in by hand.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
ServerNameSquad Dedicated ServerThe name shown in the browser
MaxPlayers100Player cap; match it to your plan
NumReservedSlots0Slots kept for admins and whitelisted members
PublicQueueLimit25Queue size; 0 turns the queue off, -1 means no limit
TagsemptyLanguage, mode, playstyle and experience tags for browser filters
RulesemptyRule tags shown on the server preview card
MapRotationModeLayerListHow the next layer is chosen
AllowTeamChangestrueLets players switch sides, within the team balance limit

Tags matter more than they look. The browser filters by them, and a server without tags only appears to players who are not filtering on that category. Offworld allows up to 2 language tags, 3 game mode tags, 1 playstyle, 1 experience and 1 map rotation tag. Team kill auto-kick and a few other options are required on licensed servers but can be changed on an unlicensed one.

Layers, Rotation and Map Voting

Squad separates a level, the terrain and buildings, from a layer, which adds the game mode, flag layout and time of day. Factions are further split into units such as Armored, Mechanized or Air Assault, each with its own vehicles. Your rotation is therefore a list of layer names, optionally with factions and units attached.

  1. Pick a MapRotationMode in Server.cfg: LayerList for a fixed order, LayerList_Vote for end-of-match votes.
  2. For a fixed order, list one layer per line in LayerRotation.cfg.
  3. For votes, fill LayerVoting.cfg with the layers for a full server and LayerVotingLowPlayers.cfg with seeding layers.
  4. Set the low population threshold and vote timings in VoteConfig.cfg.
  5. Block factions you never want with ExcludedFactions.cfg, then restart and watch the console as the first layer loads.

Update 10.6 changed the vote defaults for new servers: 3 faction choices instead of 6, a faction cooldown of 5 rounds instead of 3, a unit cooldown of 4 instead of 3 and a map cooldown of 2 instead of 1. Existing servers keep their own values, so it is your decision whether to copy the new defaults across.

Admins, RCON and Bans

Admins.cfg works in two steps. First you define groups with permissions, then you assign SteamID64s to those groups. A moderator group might hold only chat, kick and ban, a senior group adds changemap, balance and cameraman, and a whitelist group just gets reserve for a reserved slot.

FilePurpose
Admins.cfgPermission groups and the SteamID64 of each admin
Bans.cfgOne ban per line: SteamID64 and an expiry time, 0 for permanent
Rcon.cfgRCON port and password; an empty password keeps RCON off
Motd.cfgOptional welcome box shown to each player on joining
ServerMessages.cfgMessages broadcast on the server message interval

Offworld's policy for licensed servers also gives a useful model for any community: bans need a valid reason and evidence, players need a way to appeal, rules must be readable in game and apply to everyone. Licensed admins may only disable vehicle claiming while they are present, using AdminDisableVehicleClaiming 1.

Workshop Mods on a Squad Server

Squad's mods live on the Steam Workshop. Offworld's wiki describes the server side simply: each mod goes into SquadGame/Plugins/Mods in a folder named after its Workshop ID, and on boot the server prints the vanilla maps followed by every modded map it found.

  • Upload: copy the mod folder from your own Workshop download over SFTP, or into place with the File Manager.
  • Rotate: add the mod's layer names to LayerRotation.cfg or the voting lists.
  • Tell players: list the required Workshop items in your Discord and MOTD, since clients need the same files.
  • Find Match: it only offers modded servers to players who already have those mods installed.

Licensed servers that run mods face extra conditions: mods must perform well, work on Linux and Windows out of the box, and avoid forced ads or hidden controls. On an unlicensed server you have more freedom, but the same habits keep loading times down.

Patches, Restarts and Keeping the Server Healthy

Offworld rates licensed servers by tick rate: green above 35 TPS, yellow below 25 and red below 15, where a license is at risk. Even without a license those numbers are a fair target for a smooth match, and regular restarts are one of the simplest ways to hold them.

  • Schedule a daily restart in a quiet hour, and an update check before it.
  • After a hotfix that changes the server build, update straight away; out-of-date servers lose their players.
  • When the mod version rises, unload Workshop mods until their creators rebuild them.
  • Keep a backup before editing configs, so a bad line can be rolled back in minutes.

Backups cover your configs and mod folders for the last 7 days, and you can download any of them from the panel to keep a copy of your own.

What to Check Before Renting a Squad Server

Offers can look alike at first glance. These are the points that shape day-to-day life as an admin.

  1. Slot sizes that fit SquadPlans should run up to 100 slots for 50v50, with smaller sizes for training or seeding.
  2. Honest licensing termsLicenses come from Offworld alone. Be wary of any rental that presents one as a product feature.
  3. Direct config accessYou should be able to open Server.cfg, Admins.cfg and the layer files yourself, at any hour.
  4. Mod uploadsSFTP or a file manager that handles large Workshop folders without fuss.
  5. Clock speedA 100 player server leans on single-thread speed to hold its tick rate.
  6. Location and pingTest from where your players actually are before you commit.
  7. Billing flexibilityLook at monthly against longer terms, setup fees and minimum contracts.
