Same game, new name

Remnants Is Now Rem Survival: Where the Game Stands

Immortal Hand Studios opened Early Access under the name Remnants on 5 March 2021 and announced on 6 April 2023 that the game is now called Rem Survival (same Steam app), after players kept landing in other games' communities. It is still in Early Access and built by a single developer, so updates arrive in bursts rather than on a fixed schedule.

Early Access5 March 2021RenamedRem Survival · 6 April 2023Latest patch0.26.01.06 · 8 January 2026

01

One game, two names

The Steam page, the server browser and every recent patch note say Rem Survival. Our product keeps the Remnants name, and the server it runs is the same game.

02

Recent patches

Late 2025 brought duct tape repairs, health boosters, map zooming and vehicle storage, and the Halloween and Christmas events came back again. The newest patch we found is 0.26.01.06 from 8 January 2026.

03

Engine and platforms

The game moved to Unreal Engine 5 in July 2022 (version 5.5.4 since May 2025) and runs on Windows and on SteamOS and Linux, including the Steam Deck.

04

When a patch lands

If players update before a server does, the developer points them to the last-update-branch beta on Steam until the server catches up. On our side, Steam Update and a restart bring the server current.

Settings & admin

Settings and Admin Tools for Remnants Server Hosting

The Rem Survival Steam Workshop is for item skins that players submit and vote on, not for server mods. What the dedicated server does offer is a long list of settings, and most communities shape their island with those.

Gameplay settings

Gameplay multipliers

Experience (up to 10x), hunger and thirst, decay, NPC numbers and NPC damage, radiation, loot rarity and a death penalty for research points can each be tuned, and most go as low as 0.1.

Rules of the island

Switch drop-on-death behaviour, turn elite NPCs off or restrict building in towns. Day length can be set from 30 minutes and night length from 5.

A visible wipe cycle

The Server Wipe Cycle setting appears in the server browser, so players can see your schedule before they join.

Running the community

Admins and moderators

Name them in the server config. Admins get an in-game menu with an item spawner and a player viewer, and can teleport by clicking the world map.

RCON

Dedicated servers have supported RCON since April 2022, so you can moderate without being in the game.

Whitelist, password and community link

Lock the server with a password, let whitelisted players in without one, and add a Discord or website link players can open from the in-game menu.

Memory for the wipe

RAM for Remnants Server Hosting: What Each Plan Gets

The developer lists 8GB of memory to play and 16GB as recommended, but publishes nothing for the dedicated server. Our bundles are our own sizing for an Unreal Engine 5 survival world: 8GB on the smallest plan, rising to 16GB on the largest. Base count, vehicles and the length of a wipe are what push memory up.

  • Up to 10 players, one clan or a PvE crew

    Plan: 10 Slots
    RAM included: 8GB

When to add more: Seldom. Think about 12GB if the base count climbs late in a long wipe.

  • 11 to 20 players, several clans

    Plan: 20 Slots
    RAM included: 12GB

When to add more: If the memory graph sits near the top on raid nights, step up to 16GB.

  • 21 to 30 players, a public wipe server

    Plan: 30 Slots
    RAM included: 16GB

When to add more: Crowded towns and lots of vehicles can justify 20GB or 24GB.

RAM tiers on the order form: 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. Upgrade later from the client area and the island stays as it is.

Built for wipes

Remnants Server Hosting Features

What makes the biggest difference on a survival island that people come back to.

Your own wipe schedule

Wipe monthly, every quarter or never. The community decides, not an official server rota.

Tuned difficulty

Move hunger, radiation, loot rarity and NPC numbers until the island feels right for your group.

A copy before every wipe

Keep the old map in a backup so a wipe you regret is only a restore away.

RCON and admin menu

Moderate from outside the game with RCON, or in game with the item spawner and player viewer.

DDoS protection

Attack traffic is filtered before it reaches the server, so a sore loser cannot end raid night.

5.0GHz CPUs, NVMe drives

Fast cores and storage help when bases, vehicles and players all load at once.

Before the first wipe

Remnants Server Hosting Essentials Before the First Wipe

Five things to settle before you open the island to anyone else.

  1. PvE or PvP

Rem Survival supports both on dedicated servers. Decide before launch, because changing the rules halfway through a wipe tends to split a community.

  2. Wipe cycle from day one

Players read the wipe cycle in the server browser. Set it before you advertise the server and keep to it.

  3. Know the decay timers

Patch notes put offline door decay at 29 days, base items at 35 and the base itself at 40. Inactive players' items are cleared after 30 days on dedicated servers.

  4. Updates come through Steam

When a patch lands, run Steam Update and restart. Anyone who updated first can use the last-update-branch beta until you have.

  5. Edit the config, then restart

Admins, moderators, multipliers and the whitelist load when the server starts, so restart after every change.

Answers

Remnants Server Hosting Questions

Short answers to what Remnants and Rem Survival server owners ask us most.

The game and its name

Is Remnants the same game as Rem Survival?

Yes. Immortal Hand Studios renamed Remnants to Rem Survival, announced on 6 April 2023. The Steam store entry stayed the same and player progress carried over, and our Remnants servers run the Rem Survival dedicated server.

Is Rem Survival still being updated?

It is in Early Access with one developer. Patches came regularly through 2025, and the most recent one we found, 0.26.01.06, is from 8 January 2026. Check the game's Steam news before you plan a very long wipe.

Can console players join?

No. Rem Survival is sold on Steam for Windows and SteamOS or Linux, so everyone joins from a PC or a Steam Deck.

Setting up

How quickly is my Remnants server ready?

It is created automatically once your payment clears, within 20 minutes, and the control panel login arrives by email.

How do players find my server?

In the game's server browser, which can filter and search by name. Server names can be up to 90 characters, and the browser also shows the wipe cycle you set.

How do I make myself an admin?

Add your ID to the admin list in the server config and restart. The admin menu then opens in game, and moderators have a list of their own.

Can I keep the server private?

Yes. Set a password, and add your regular players to the whitelist so they can connect without typing it.

Wipes and rules

Can I run PvE instead of PvP?

Yes. Rem Survival supports PvE and PvP on dedicated servers, as well as co-op. Pick the rules before the first wipe, because players choose servers by them.

How often should I wipe?

That is your call. When the developer ran official servers in 2021, some PvP servers wiped monthly and the rest every three months. Set your own rhythm with the Server Wipe Cycle setting, and player data can be kept across a map wipe.

What happens to players who stop logging in?

Their bases decay on dedicated servers: doors after 29 days offline, base items after 35 and the base after 40, according to the patch notes. Their items are cleared after 30 days of inactivity.

Plans and billing

How much does Remnants server hosting cost?

The 10 slot plan is the cheapest, at €11.60 a month. The table above shows every plan for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and the longer terms cost less per month.

Which location should I choose?

Run the ping test on this page from the PC you play on. The lowest result for most of your players is the right pick, and all 9 locations cost the same.

Can I upgrade later?

Yes. Add slots or RAM from the client area as the community grows, and the island stays where it is.

Is there a contract?

No. The monthly plan renews month by month and you can cancel whenever you like. The 3, 6 and 12 month terms are paid upfront for a lower monthly rate.

What Rem Survival Is, and Why the Name Changed

Rem Survival is a post-apocalyptic survival game. You scavenge abandoned ruins, craft gear from scrap and salvage, and fight the environment as much as other players: hunger, exposure, radiation and exhaustion all wear you down. On top of that sit tiered base building, a clan system that shares base access and items, vehicles, quests and traders. It can be played alone, in co-op, on PvE servers or on PvP servers.

The game launched in Early Access as Remnants, a name chosen in 2015 and first shown on Steam Greenlight in November 2016. On 6 April 2023 the developer announced its new name, Rem Survival, explaining that other games had taken similar names and players kept being sent to the wrong community. The Steam entry and player progress carried over, although owners of self-hosted servers had to move their saved folder into the renamed server folder. That is why you will see both names on this page, and why a Remnants server from us is a Rem Survival server in practice.

Early Access and a Solo Developer

Rem Survival has been in Early Access since 5 March 2021, made and published by Immortal Hand Studios. The patch notes are signed by one person and say so openly, which explains the rhythm of updates: several patches in a few weeks, then a quieter spell. The milestones that matter for a server owner are these.

  • July 2022: the move from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, with a rebuilt save system so old worlds carried over.
  • May 2024: the dedicated server config loading and saving was rebuilt.
  • September 2024: Linux and Steam Deck support, a bigger inventory and new offline decay timers.
  • May 2025: Unreal Engine 5.5.4.
  • Late 2025 to January 2026: repair bench fixes, duct tape, health boosters and controller fixes, with patch 0.26.01.06 on 8 January 2026 as the newest we found.

Choosing Slots and RAM

Slots are the number of players who can be online at the same moment, not the number of people who ever join. A clan of eight with a few friends who drop in fits the 10 slot plan. Two or three clans who raid and trade with each other need the 20 slot plan, and a public server that fills up on wipe day needs 30. The developer raised the dedicated server's own player cap from 30 to 50 in June 2021; our order form sells 10 to 30 slots for this game.

Memory is about the world more than the head count. Every base piece, deployable, vehicle and stash has to be held by the server, and on a PvP island the numbers climb steadily until the next wipe. That is why the bundled RAM rises with each plan: 8GB, then 12GB, then 16GB. If you run long wipes or a building-heavy PvE island, the next tier up is a cheap insurance policy, and you can add it later from the client area without moving the world.

Server Settings Worth Knowing

Over five years of patches the dedicated server has picked up a solid set of settings. These are the ones the patch notes describe, and the ones most owners change first.

Rem Survival dedicated server settings from the developer's patch notes
SettingWhat it does
Experience multiplierSpeeds up levelling, up to 10x
Hunger and thirst multipliersHow fast survivors need food and water
Decay multipliersHow quickly abandoned structures fall apart
NPC spawn and NPC damageHow many NPCs appear and how hard they hit
Radiation multiplierHow dangerous radiated areas are
Loot RNG multiplierHow rare the better loot drops are
Death penalty multiplierHow many research points a death costs
Disable Elite NPCsRemoves the toughest NPC variants
Drop on deathWhat players lose when they die
Restrict Town BuildingKeeps players from building inside towns
Server Wipe CycleShows your wipe schedule in the server browser
Server Community LinkAdds a Discord or website link to the in-game menu

Wipes, Decay and Inactive Players

A wipe resets the map so everyone starts again on equal terms. On PvP servers it keeps the island fair, because the oldest clans otherwise end up with walls nobody can break. Player data is saved in separate files and can be kept through a map wipe, so you can wipe bases while letting characters keep their progress, or wipe everything for a true fresh start.

Between wipes, decay keeps the island tidy. Structures placed far from a building or an area banner decay over time, and bases of players who stop logging in decay in stages: doors after 29 days offline, base items after 35 days and the base itself after 40 days, with the items of inactive players cleared after 30 days. Decay multipliers let you speed this up on a busy server or slow it down for a relaxed PvE group.

Announce wipes in advance, set the Server Wipe Cycle so new players see it, and take a backup before every wipe. The backup costs nothing and saves arguments when someone asks for last month's map back.

Admins, Moderators and RCON

Admins and moderators are listed in the server config, and since 2021 a server can have more than one of each. Admins get a menu in game with an item spawner and a player viewer, can teleport by holding Left Shift and clicking the world map, and have commands that help with day-to-day running:

  • respawnloot to refill the loot across the map.
  • giveplayer to hand an item to a named player.
  • TeleBag to bring a player's dropped death bags to the admin.
  • Ban and unban commands for problem players.

Quest items cannot be spawned with admin commands, so a moderator cannot shortcut the quest lines. RCON has been available on dedicated servers since April 2022 for moderating from outside the game, and players have their own ABANDONCHARACTER command, which resets their progress on that server if they want a clean start.

Updates and the Last-Update Branch

Servers that do not match the current game version are shown in grey in the server browser, so an outdated server is easy to spot and hard to join. When a patch is released, run Steam Update in the panel and restart.

There is a window where players have the new version and the server does not. For that case the developer keeps a Steam beta called last-update-branch: players switch to it in Steam and carry on with the previous build until the server is updated. It is worth pinning that tip in your Discord, together with the wipe schedule.

Moving or Backing Up Your World

The world lives in the server's saved folder. When the game was renamed, owners of self-hosted servers had to move that folder from the old server folder into the new one, which shows how portable it is. To bring an island from a home server, stop both servers, upload the saved folder with SFTP and start the server again. Take a panel backup of the fresh server first, so you can switch back if something does not line up.

For safety, use three layers: the Backup Manager before every wipe or big patch, scheduled backups overnight, and our offsite copies of the last 7 days. A restore takes a few clicks and a restart.

What to Compare Before You Rent a Remnants Server

Rem Survival hosting offers look alike on a price list. These are the details that decide how a wipe actually goes.

  1. RAM in the priceCheck how much memory the base price includes and what the next tier costs. A late-wipe server short on RAM is no bargain.
  2. Control over settingsMake sure you can edit the config yourself: multipliers, wipe cycle, admins and whitelist, without waiting on a ticket.
  3. Speed after a patchAsk how quickly you can update after a new build. A one-click Steam Update keeps the server out of the grey list.
  4. Backups you restore yourselfLook for snapshots you can take before a wipe and restore without help, plus offsite copies.
  5. Locations you can testRun a ping test from where your players are. Latency decides gunfights more than CPU speed does.
  6. Billing termsCompare monthly and longer terms, and check for setup fees or minimum contracts.
