What Rem Survival Is, and Why the Name Changed
Rem Survival is a post-apocalyptic survival game. You scavenge abandoned ruins, craft gear from scrap and salvage, and fight the environment as much as other players: hunger, exposure, radiation and exhaustion all wear you down. On top of that sit tiered base building, a clan system that shares base access and items, vehicles, quests and traders. It can be played alone, in co-op, on PvE servers or on PvP servers.
The game launched in Early Access as Remnants, a name chosen in 2015 and first shown on Steam Greenlight in November 2016. On 6 April 2023 the developer announced its new name, Rem Survival, explaining that other games had taken similar names and players kept being sent to the wrong community. The Steam entry and player progress carried over, although owners of self-hosted servers had to move their saved folder into the renamed server folder. That is why you will see both names on this page, and why a Remnants server from us is a Rem Survival server in practice.
Early Access and a Solo Developer
Rem Survival has been in Early Access since 5 March 2021, made and published by Immortal Hand Studios. The patch notes are signed by one person and say so openly, which explains the rhythm of updates: several patches in a few weeks, then a quieter spell. The milestones that matter for a server owner are these.
- July 2022: the move from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, with a rebuilt save system so old worlds carried over.
- May 2024: the dedicated server config loading and saving was rebuilt.
- September 2024: Linux and Steam Deck support, a bigger inventory and new offline decay timers.
- May 2025: Unreal Engine 5.5.4.
- Late 2025 to January 2026: repair bench fixes, duct tape, health boosters and controller fixes, with patch 0.26.01.06 on 8 January 2026 as the newest we found.
Choosing Slots and RAM
Slots are the number of players who can be online at the same moment, not the number of people who ever join. A clan of eight with a few friends who drop in fits the 10 slot plan. Two or three clans who raid and trade with each other need the 20 slot plan, and a public server that fills up on wipe day needs 30. The developer raised the dedicated server's own player cap from 30 to 50 in June 2021; our order form sells 10 to 30 slots for this game.
Memory is about the world more than the head count. Every base piece, deployable, vehicle and stash has to be held by the server, and on a PvP island the numbers climb steadily until the next wipe. That is why the bundled RAM rises with each plan: 8GB, then 12GB, then 16GB. If you run long wipes or a building-heavy PvE island, the next tier up is a cheap insurance policy, and you can add it later from the client area without moving the world.
Server Settings Worth Knowing
Over five years of patches the dedicated server has picked up a solid set of settings. These are the ones the patch notes describe, and the ones most owners change first.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Experience multiplier | Speeds up levelling, up to 10x |
| Hunger and thirst multipliers | How fast survivors need food and water |
| Decay multipliers | How quickly abandoned structures fall apart |
| NPC spawn and NPC damage | How many NPCs appear and how hard they hit |
| Radiation multiplier | How dangerous radiated areas are |
| Loot RNG multiplier | How rare the better loot drops are |
| Death penalty multiplier | How many research points a death costs |
| Disable Elite NPCs | Removes the toughest NPC variants |
| Drop on death | What players lose when they die |
| Restrict Town Building | Keeps players from building inside towns |
| Server Wipe Cycle | Shows your wipe schedule in the server browser |
| Server Community Link | Adds a Discord or website link to the in-game menu |
Wipes, Decay and Inactive Players
A wipe resets the map so everyone starts again on equal terms. On PvP servers it keeps the island fair, because the oldest clans otherwise end up with walls nobody can break. Player data is saved in separate files and can be kept through a map wipe, so you can wipe bases while letting characters keep their progress, or wipe everything for a true fresh start.
Between wipes, decay keeps the island tidy. Structures placed far from a building or an area banner decay over time, and bases of players who stop logging in decay in stages: doors after 29 days offline, base items after 35 days and the base itself after 40 days, with the items of inactive players cleared after 30 days. Decay multipliers let you speed this up on a busy server or slow it down for a relaxed PvE group.
Announce wipes in advance, set the Server Wipe Cycle so new players see it, and take a backup before every wipe. The backup costs nothing and saves arguments when someone asks for last month's map back.
Admins, Moderators and RCON
Admins and moderators are listed in the server config, and since 2021 a server can have more than one of each. Admins get a menu in game with an item spawner and a player viewer, can teleport by holding Left Shift and clicking the world map, and have commands that help with day-to-day running:
- respawnloot to refill the loot across the map.
- giveplayer to hand an item to a named player.
- TeleBag to bring a player's dropped death bags to the admin.
- Ban and unban commands for problem players.
Quest items cannot be spawned with admin commands, so a moderator cannot shortcut the quest lines. RCON has been available on dedicated servers since April 2022 for moderating from outside the game, and players have their own ABANDONCHARACTER command, which resets their progress on that server if they want a clean start.
Updates and the Last-Update Branch
Servers that do not match the current game version are shown in grey in the server browser, so an outdated server is easy to spot and hard to join. When a patch is released, run Steam Update in the panel and restart.
There is a window where players have the new version and the server does not. For that case the developer keeps a Steam beta called last-update-branch: players switch to it in Steam and carry on with the previous build until the server is updated. It is worth pinning that tip in your Discord, together with the wipe schedule.
Moving or Backing Up Your World
The world lives in the server's saved folder. When the game was renamed, owners of self-hosted servers had to move that folder from the old server folder into the new one, which shows how portable it is. To bring an island from a home server, stop both servers, upload the saved folder with SFTP and start the server again. Take a panel backup of the fresh server first, so you can switch back if something does not line up.
For safety, use three layers: the Backup Manager before every wipe or big patch, scheduled backups overnight, and our offsite copies of the last 7 days. A restore takes a few clicks and a restart.
What to Compare Before You Rent a Remnants Server
Rem Survival hosting offers look alike on a price list. These are the details that decide how a wipe actually goes.
- RAM in the priceCheck how much memory the base price includes and what the next tier costs. A late-wipe server short on RAM is no bargain.
- Control over settingsMake sure you can edit the config yourself: multipliers, wipe cycle, admins and whitelist, without waiting on a ticket.
- Speed after a patchAsk how quickly you can update after a new build. A one-click Steam Update keeps the server out of the grey list.
- Backups you restore yourselfLook for snapshots you can take before a wipe and restore without help, plus offsite copies.
- Locations you can testRun a ping test from where your players are. Latency decides gunfights more than CPU speed does.
- Billing termsCompare monthly and longer terms, and check for setup fees or minimum contracts.
