Headquarters

Your Battle Cry of Freedom Server Hosting Control Panel

Running a regiment's server means changing settings between events, rotating maps and restarting at the right moment. The panel puts that in a browser, so an officer can prepare the next battle without remote desktop.

Gaming Deluxe game server control panel showing the server menu, connection details and Stop and Restart controls

The Gaming Deluxe control panel, pictured with a Windrose server. Battle Cry of Freedom servers use this same panel.

Server config files

Open the server's config in the File Manager to change the name, passwords, game mode and admin settings, then restart.

SFTP access

Copy config sets and map files to and from the server over SFTP when you prepare an event.

Live console

Watch the server log during a battle and spot problems before the line breaks for the wrong reason.

Backups before events

Snapshot the server before a big event and restore it afterwards if a settings change needs undoing.

Scheduled restarts

Restart ahead of an event so 300 players join a fresh server, not one that has run all week.

Sub users for officers

Give event organisers their own panel login with only the rights they need.

Development ended 2024

Battle Cry of Freedom in 2026: Finished, Still Fought

Battle Cry of Freedom launched on Steam on 1 March 2022 and is still on sale. On 20 February 2024 Flying Squirrel Entertainment announced that it was discontinuing development for the foreseeable future, after the 2.0 Update and a year of extra work. The studio has moved on to Over The Top: WWI.

Release1 March 20222.0 Update9 March 2023Development ended20 February 2024

01

No more updates

The developers said player numbers fell after launch and again after 2.0, so further development was no longer financially viable. Plan around the game as it is now.

02

Official servers stay on

In the same announcement the studio said it would keep hosting servers for its European and North American communities and had no plans to shut them down while the game has players.

03

The 2.0 Update

Released on 9 March 2023, 2.0 added cavalry and horse artillery, trains, steamboats and launches, deformable terrain with trench digging, a reworked class system and a graphics overhaul.

04

Bot Commanders

A patch on 15 April 2023 added Bot Commanders for Commander Battle and Conquest, plus new server settings and config options for admins.

Maps & settings

Maps, Modes and Workshop Content for Battle Cry of Freedom Server Hosting

The game includes a level editor and Steam Workshop support, and server owners have a long list of settings. Together they let a regiment shape a battle around its own drill and rules.

Battles

Workshop maps

Steam lists Workshop support and an included level editor, so community-made battlefields can join the official ones on your rotation.

Commander Battles

Each player leads a company of AI soldiers. The Steam page puts the limit at 800 bots per server, with infantry, cavalry and artillery.

Line battles

Massive player-versus-player battles are the game's centrepiece, with up to 600 players on one battlefield according to the Steam page.

Rules and players

Server settings

Patches have added settings such as rogue bots spawning as zombies, a buck-shot option and a config line to hide admin commands from players.

Admin controls

A config setting decides which admin level may spawn bots with admin keybinds, so officers get only the tools they need.

Windows players

Battle Cry of Freedom is a Windows game on Steam. The minimum spec is a 64-bit system with 8GB of RAM and a 3.5GHz quad core.

Memory per battle size

RAM for Battle Cry of Freedom Server Hosting

Flying Squirrel does not publish memory figures for the dedicated server, so these tiers are our own suggestion. What drives load is the number of soldiers on the field, players and bots together, and a destructible battlefield with artillery and vehicles. That is why memory rises with each plan, from 5GB at 50 slots.

  • Company drill and skirmishes

    Plan: 50 Slots
    Memory: 5GB

Our note: Enough for a small Commander Battle.

  • Regiment line battle

    Plan: 100 Slots
    Memory: 8GB

Our note: Comfortable with artillery in play.

  • Multi-regiment publics

    Plan: 200 Slots
    Memory: 12GB

Our note: Headroom for cavalry, vehicles and destruction.

  • Large events

    Plan: 300 Slots
    Memory: 16GB

Our note: Our pick for brigade-scale nights.

  • Campaign weekends

    Plan: 400 Slots
    Memory: 20GB

Our note: Add more if you also fill the field with bots.

Memory tiers on the order form: 5GB, 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. You can move up or down later from the client area and the server keeps its files.

Before the first volley

Battle Cry of Freedom Server Hosting Essentials Before You Order

Four things to settle before the first volley.

  1. Expect no new patches

Development ended in February 2024. What the game does today is what it will do, so test your event setup once and keep it.

  2. Size for your biggest night

Count the players at your largest regular event, add bots if you use them, and choose the plan with a little room above that.

  3. Admin levels first

Decide who can spawn bots and use admin commands before the server goes public, and set that in the config.

  4. Players need a solid PC

Steam's minimum spec is a 64-bit Windows system with 8GB of RAM and a GTX 960. Recruits on weaker machines will struggle in a 300 player battle.

Answers

Battle Cry of Freedom Server Hosting Questions

Short answers to what regiments ask us.

Getting started

How soon is my server ready?

The server is created automatically when payment clears, and the panel login arrives by email, usually within a few minutes.

Is Battle Cry of Freedom still being updated?

No. Flying Squirrel Entertainment announced on 20 February 2024 that it was discontinuing development for the foreseeable future. The game is still on sale on Steam and the studio said it would keep its own EU and NA servers running while there are players.

Which location should we choose?

Have a few regulars run the ping test on this page and pick the location with the best result for most of them. All 9 locations cost the same.

Players and battles

How many players can a Battle Cry of Freedom server hold?

The Steam page describes battles with up to 600 players on one battlefield. Our order form sells 50 to 555 slots, and the plans on this page run from 50 to 400.

Do bots count as player slots?

Slots are for players. Bots come from the game's own Commander Battle settings, with up to 800 per server according to the Steam page, but a field full of bots adds load, so leave memory headroom.

Can we run Workshop maps?

The game supports the Steam Workshop and includes a level editor. Add the maps you want to the server and its rotation, then restart.

Which game modes can we host?

The patch notes name Battle, Commander Battle, Conquest and free-for-all modes. Set the mode and maps in the server config before the event.

Settings and admin

Can we hide admin commands from players?

Yes. A config setting added in April 2023 hides admin commands from players, while admin and toy or god mode commands stay available to admins.

Can we control who spawns bots?

Yes. A config setting sets the admin level needed to spawn bots with admin keybinds.

Plans and billing

How much does Battle Cry of Freedom server hosting cost?

The 50 slot plan is €7.00 a month. Each extra slot adds the same small amount, and bigger plans bundle more RAM. Location does not change the price.

Why does RAM rise with the plan?

Bigger battles mean more soldiers, horses, guns and destruction for the server to track, so each larger plan bundles a bigger memory tier. You can change it at checkout.

Is there a contract?

No. Monthly plans have no minimum term. 3, 6 and 12 month billing is also on the order form.

What Battle Cry of Freedom Is

Battle Cry of Freedom is a first and third-person multiplayer game set in the American Civil War, where you fight for the Union or the Confederacy. It came to Steam on 1 March 2022 from Flying Squirrel Entertainment, a small studio whose Steam page talks about up to 600 players fighting on the same battlefield in a destructible environment.

It is built around the way those battles were fought. Infantry stand in line and volley, sharpshooters pick targets, musicians relay orders, gunners work the artillery, cavalry charge the flanks, engineers build defences and pontoon bridges, and surgeons patch up the wounded. Melee is directional, inspired by Mount and Blade: Warband, and the bullet physics model velocity, twist rate, humidity, temperature, air density and wind.

  • Arsenal: more than 120 weapons, 70 types of ammunition and more than 20 artillery pieces, according to the Steam page.
  • Vehicles: armoured trains, steamboats and wooden launches since the 2.0 Update.
  • Destruction: bridges, trees, walls and fences can be destroyed, and since 2.0 the terrain itself deforms.

Hosting a Game That Is No Longer Developed

On 20 February 2024 the studio announced it was discontinuing development for the foreseeable future. Its reasons were plain: players declined after launch, and again after the 2.0 Update, and operating costs exceeded income. It thanked the community, especially players in China, and promised to keep hosting its European and North American servers as long as the game has players.

For a server owner this is less alarming than it sounds. The game is still sold, still runs and still has organised communities. What changes is that nothing will break or improve in a future patch, so the configuration you settle on today will keep working. The flip side is that bugs you find now are yours to work around with settings and rules, not something to wait out.

Sizing a Server for Line Battles and Commander Battles

Two numbers matter: how many people turn up, and how many bots you add. Line battles are about players, and the Steam page mentions up to 600 of them. Commander Battles hand each player a company of AI soldiers, with up to 800 bots per server, so a night with 60 players can still put hundreds of soldiers on the field.

Our plan suggestions (a guide, not a rule)
EventPlanMemory
Company drill, skirmishes, small Commander Battles50 Slots5GB
One regiment plus visitors100 Slots8GB
Weekly multi-regiment public200 Slots12GB
Brigade-scale organised event300 Slots16GB
Campaign weekend or alliance battle400 Slots20GB

The order form goes all the way to 555 slots, one at a time, so you can match an unusual size exactly. Flying Squirrel publishes no memory figure for the server, so our tiers are a suggestion; if you run very large bot counts or heavy custom maps, choose a bigger tier at checkout or upgrade later from the client area.

Maps, Modes and Server Settings

Patch notes over the game's life name its main modes: Battle, Commander Battle, Conquest and free-for-all. Steam lists Workshop support and an included level editor, so communities can build their own battlefields, and the April 2023 patch added new maps to the official servers. Most regiments keep a short rotation they know well and save special maps for events.

Server settings shape the battle as much as the map. The April 2023 patch alone added a random chance of rogue bots spawning as zombies, a buck-shot setting separate from buck and ball, flag spawning for more modes, and a setting that shows distance on orders and capture points.

  1. Back up the server from the panel.
  2. Edit the config in the File Manager, or upload a prepared config set over SFTP.
  3. Set the mode, maps and any event-specific options.
  4. Restart and join as an admin to check spawns and orders.
  5. Open the server to the regiment.

Admins, Officers and Keeping Order

Large battles need several admins, but not everyone needs every power. The config lets you hide admin commands from regular players and decide which admin level may spawn bots with admin keybinds. Give officers the level they need for an event, and keep the highest level to the people responsible for the server.

Outside the game, use panel sub users rather than sharing your login. An event organiser can restart the server or swap a config without seeing your billing details, and you can remove their access when they step down.

Running Events That Bring Players Back

The developers singled out community members who kept hosting events despite the lack of updates, and that is the lesson for any server owner: regular, well-run events are what keep a game like this alive. Publish a schedule, keep the rules short, and restart the server before each event so the battle starts on a clean slate.

Mix the format. A line battle one week and a Commander Battle the next gives both drill-minded players and newcomers a reason to come. After each event, note what slowed things down, such as long spawns, confusing orders or a map that favoured one side, and fix it in the config before the next one.

Moving From Another Host

Download your config files and any custom maps from the old server, upload them here with SFTP, and check the settings before the first event. We keep offsite backups of the last 7 days that you can restore yourself, and our support team can help if something does not carry over cleanly.

What to Compare Before You Rent a Battle Cry of Freedom Server

A regiment's server needs more than a low headline price.

  1. Slot flexibilityPer-slot pricing lets you pay for 120 players rather than jumping to the next big package.
  2. Memory for crowdsCheck what RAM comes with large plans; hundreds of soldiers and bots need headroom.
  3. Config accessYou need the real config files for admin levels and event settings, not only a few toggles.
  4. LocationMixed EU and US regiments should test ping from both sides before choosing.
  5. BackupsRestoring your own backup after an event should take minutes.
  6. TermsMonthly billing with no setup fee lets you try the server before committing.
