Run the lobby

Managing Wreckfest Server Hosting in the Panel

A Wreckfest server is driven by one config file and a list of chat commands. The panel keeps both close: edit the config in the browser, restart, and watch the lobby from the console.

The Gaming Deluxe control panel, shown with a Windrose server. Wreckfest servers have the same menu.

File Manager

Open server_config.cfg in the browser to set the server name, the event loop, admin Steam IDs and logging.

Web Console

Watch drivers join and leave, and see chat and admin commands as they happen.

Steam Update

Bring the dedicated server up to the latest Steam build after an update, so every driver can connect.

Scheduled Tasks

Restart before race night or once a day at a quiet hour, so the lobby starts clean.

SFTP

Keep copies of your favourite configs on your PC and switch between league and open-lobby setups.

Log Viewer

Read the server log and saved chat when a race ends in an argument.

Where the game stands

Wreckfest in 2026: A Mature Game Beside Its Sequel

Bugbear released Wreckfest on PC on 14 June 2018. Updates since have been about stability rather than content: the PC crossplay update of 22 March 2024 is the newest major post on its Steam news page. Wreckfest 2 entered Early Access on 20 March 2025 as a separate game.

Release14 June 2018PC crossplay22 March 2024Wreckfest 2 Early Access20 March 2025

01

PC crossplay

The March 2024 update let players on Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store join the same lobbies, and refreshed the networking engine for server stability.

02

Server CPU fix

Two small updates in January 2023 fixed online issues, and the second one dealt with a rise in server CPU use after the first.

03

Wreckfest 2 is separate

The sequel is its own game with its own servers. Your Wreckfest server keeps running the original, and players need the original to join it.

04

A stable base

With content complete, a server you configure today is unlikely to need rework after a patch. Run Steam Update if one does appear.

Mods & crossplay

Mods and Crossplay for Wreckfest Server Hosting

Wreckfest supports the Steam Workshop on PC, and since 2024 PC players from three stores share lobbies. The two interact, so plan your lobby around who will join.

Mods

Steam Workshop

The Steam page lists Workshop support, with mods that add cars such as monster trucks and classic maps. Players subscribe through Steam.

Mods on a server

Drivers generally need the same mod content as a modded event to take part. Post the list in your Discord before race night.

Keep a vanilla option

An open lobby is easier to join without mods. You can keep modded events for league nights and run the base game the rest of the week.

Crossplay

Steam, GOG and Epic

Since the March 2024 update, PC players on all three stores can join the same lobbies, so your store does not limit who can race.

Workshop is Steam only

Workshop mods come through Steam. Drivers on GOG or Epic may not have access to the same mod files, so a modded server can split a crossplay group.

Console players

Wreckfest is also sold on PlayStation. Bugbear's hosting post covers the PC dedicated server, so plan this server for PC drivers.

Memory per grid

RAM for Wreckfest Server Hosting by Grid

Bugbear's own guidance is that a server's capacity depends on bandwidth and hardware rather than a fixed number. In a data centre bandwidth is not the limit, so we bundle 5GB with 20 slots and 8GB with 24, and you can pick a bigger tier at checkout for heavy mod content.

  • League night, base game

    Plan: 20 Slots
    RAM included: 5GB

When to add more: Rarely. Consider 8GB if you load a long list of mod tracks.

  • Full grid, public lobby

    Plan: 24 Slots
    RAM included: 8GB

When to add more: Large mod packs with many cars and tracks can use 12GB.

Memory tiers on the order form: 5GB included, then 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. Upgrading later from the client area keeps your configs.

Wreckfest Server Hosting Features

What a racing lobby or league gets out of a rented server.

Your event rotation

List tracks and modes in the event loop, and the server runs them in order without anyone hosting.

Admins from the start

Add Steam IDs as admins in the config, so your stewards can kick, ban and restart from chat.

Three stores, one lobby

PC drivers on Steam, GOG and Epic can all join, since the 2024 crossplay update.

Always open

The lobby stays up when the organiser logs off, so drivers can practise any evening.

DDoS protection

Attack traffic is filtered upstream, so a sore loser cannot end the final.

5.0GHz CPUs

Fast cores keep the physics responsive when 24 cars pile into the same corner.

Before the green light

Wreckfest Server Hosting Essentials

Sort these before the first race night.

  1. Edit server_config.cfg

The server copies initial_server_config.cfg into server_config.cfg on first launch. Make your changes in server_config.cfg, the file it actually reads.

  2. Add your admins

Put each steward's 64-bit Steam ID in admin_steam_ids, so they get admin rights as soon as they join.

  3. Build an event loop

Add el_add lines with the tracks you want, in order. The server cycles through them on its own.

  4. Ports are open

Bugbear lists UDP 27015, 27016 and 33540 and TCP 27015 for a home server. On our network that is done for you.

  5. Agree on mods

If the lobby uses Workshop content, share the list early so drivers can subscribe before the green light.

Answers

Wreckfest Server Hosting FAQ

Quick answers to what race organisers ask us most.

Getting started

How quickly is my Wreckfest server ready?

Straight after payment: the server is created automatically and the login lands in your inbox. Most organisers have a lobby up within minutes.

Which file do I edit?

server_config.cfg. On first launch the server creates it from initial_server_config.cfg, and from then on server_config.cfg is the file it uses.

How do I become an admin?

Add your 64-bit Steam ID to admin_steam_ids in server_config.cfg and restart. In the lobby, admins can then use commands such as /kick, /ban, /restart and /balanceteams.

Which location is best?

Run the ping test on this page from your PC and choose the lowest result for most of your grid. The price is the same at all 9 locations.

Grid, mods and crossplay

How many drivers can join?

Our order form sells 20 to 24 slots. Bugbear's own server notes set no fixed cap and tie it to bandwidth and hardware, which a data centre has to spare.

Can GOG and Epic players join my server?

Yes. Since the PC crossplay update of 22 March 2024, players on Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store share the same lobbies.

Can I use Workshop mods?

Wreckfest supports the Steam Workshop. Drivers need the same mod content as the event to join, so share the list in advance, and remember that Workshop content comes through Steam.

Is this server for Wreckfest 2?

No. This page is for the original Wreckfest. Wreckfest 2 is a separate game with its own page and its own servers.

Running events

Can the server rotate tracks automatically?

Yes. Add el_add lines with the tracks you want to server_config.cfg, and the event loop cycles through them. The /eventloop command controls it from chat.

Can I keep a chat log?

Yes. Bugbear's notes describe a log setting for saving chat. Turn it on in the config and read the file in the File Manager after a race.

Can I password protect the lobby?

Yes. Admins can set one from chat with the /password command, which suits a league-only session.

Billing and plans

How much does Wreckfest server hosting cost?

The 20 slot plan costs $8.40 a month. The plans table lists both grids on 1, 3, 6 and 12 month terms, and longer terms are cheaper per month.

Can I move from 20 to 24 slots later?

Yes. Change slots, memory or other upgrades from the client area whenever you need to. Your configs stay as they are.

Is there a minimum term?

No. Pay monthly and cancel when the season ends, or prepay 3, 6 or 12 months for a lower monthly price.

Wreckfest Server Hosting: The Complete Guide

This guide covers running a Wreckfest dedicated server: what it does for a lobby or a league, the config file, the event loop, admin commands, mods and crossplay, and how to size the grid. It is written for the organiser who sets the tracks and settles the arguments.

What a Wreckfest Dedicated Server Is For

Wreckfest can be hosted from inside the game, but the lobby then depends on that player's PC and connection, and it closes when they leave. Bugbear's own forum post on hosting describes the alternative: a dedicated server, downloaded separately through SteamCMD with an anonymous login, that runs without anyone sitting in the menu. You do not even need to own the game to download the server tool.

A rented dedicated server takes that further. It runs in a data centre with steady upstream bandwidth, the ports already open and DDoS filtering in front of it. That matters in Wreckfest more than most racers, because physics-heavy contact racing with a full grid is exactly where a weak home connection shows. Bugbear's post advises starting with around 8 clients on a limited connection and working up; a data centre removes that ceiling.

server_config.cfg: The File That Runs the Lobby

The server ships with initial_server_config.cfg. On first launch it copies that file to server_config.cfg, and from then on server_config.cfg is the one it reads. Edit that file, not the initial one, and restart the server after each change.

SettingWhat it does
admin_steam_idsGives admin rights to the listed 64-bit Steam IDs as soon as they join
el_addAdds a track to the event loop; one line per event, in order
logSaves chat to a log file you can read later

Building an Event Loop

The event loop is what turns a server into a lobby people come back to. Each el_add line adds an event, and the server works through them in order, then starts again. A good loop mixes circuit races with a derby or two, so drivers who keep wrecking still have something to aim for.

  1. Stop the server and open server_config.cfg in the File Manager.
  2. Add one el_add line per event, in the order you want them to run.
  3. Save, start the server and join to check the first event loads.
  4. Use the /eventloop command in chat to control the loop during a session.

For a league night, keep the loop short and fixed so everyone races the same events. For an open lobby, a longer loop with variety keeps people around between races.

Admin Commands for Race Stewards

Admins run the lobby from chat. Bugbear's hosting post lists the commands, and the useful ones for stewards fall into three groups.

  • Players: /kick, /ban and /bansteamid remove problem drivers; /admin, /adminsteamid and /op hand out rights.
  • Racing: /restart restarts the event, /balanceteams evens out team modes, and /bot manages AI drivers.
  • Lobby: /password, /servername and /welcome change how the server looks and who can get in; /eventloop controls the rotation.

Put the stewards' Steam IDs in admin_steam_ids so they have rights the moment they join, rather than relying on whoever is online to promote them.

Workshop Mods and PC Crossplay

Wreckfest supports the Steam Workshop, and the store page mentions mods adding monster trucks and classic maps. A modded event works best when every driver has the same content, so share the mod list well before race night and ask drivers to load into the game once beforehand.

Crossplay arrived on PC with the update of 22 March 2024: players on Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store can now join the same lobbies. That widens who can race on your server, but Workshop content comes through Steam, so a heavily modded server may suit a Steam group better than a mixed one. Wreckfest is also sold on PlayStation, but Bugbear's hosting post covers the PC dedicated server, so plan the lobby for PC drivers.

Grid Size and Memory

The order form sells Wreckfest from 20 to 24 slots. Twenty is enough for most leagues, which rarely fill every spot. Twenty-four is the full grid, and on PlayStation 5 Sony's listing also gives 24 as the online player count, so it is the natural size for a public lobby or a big derby night.

PlanRAM includedBest for
20 Slots5GBLeague nights and private races
24 Slots8GBPublic lobbies and full derbies

Memory matters less in Wreckfest than in open-world games, because each event loads one track. Mods are the exception: a long list of mod cars and tracks raises memory use, so the bigger grid comes with more RAM and higher tiers are on the order form.

Ports, Updates and Staying Online

Bugbear lists UDP 27015, UDP 27016, UDP 33540 and TCP 27015 for anyone hosting at home. On our network those are open already, so drivers only need the server name or address from the panel.

Wreckfest updates are rare now, but when one lands players update first. Run Steam Update in the panel and restart, so the server matches the new build. A daily restart from Scheduled Tasks keeps a long-running lobby fresh, and a snapshot before any config change gives you a quick way back.

What to Compare Before You Rent a Wreckfest Server

Racing servers look alike on paper. These are the details that matter on race night.

  1. Grid size you can buyCheck the host sells the grid you want, and what memory comes with it.
  2. Config file accessYou will edit server_config.cfg often. A browser file manager and SFTP save time.
  3. Ping to your driversContact racing feels lag first. Test from your own PC before you order.
  4. Restarts on demandMake sure you can restart and update the server yourself, any time.
  5. DDoS filteringCompetitive lobbies attract grudges. Check traffic is filtered before it reaches the server.
  6. Billing for a seasonLook for monthly billing with no setup fee, so you can stop when the league ends.
