What an Assetto Corsa Server Is For
Assetto Corsa ships with its own dedicated server, acServer, in the game's server folder, along with acServerManager to prepare it. That makes it easy to race on the official servers of others, but a league or a club wants a server that is always there with the right track, the right cars and the right rules.
Typical uses are a weekly league with a fixed calendar, a hotlap server where drivers chase each other's times all week, a drift or touge server for one car class, and open lobbies on long circuits. A hosted server keeps any of these online with a fixed address, steady upload bandwidth and no home PC left running.
server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini
Two files in the cfg folder define the server. server_cfg.ini holds the server-wide settings, and entry_list.ini lists the cars on the grid, one CAR_ entry per slot with its model and skin. A blacklist file can hold banned Steam GUIDs.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| NAME | The server name in the lobby |
| CARS | Allowed car models, separated by semicolons |
| TRACK and CONFIG_TRACK | The circuit and its layout |
| MAX_CLIENTS | Grid size, no more than the track's pit boxes |
| PASSWORD and ADMIN_PASSWORD | Entry password and admin password |
| UDP_PORT, TCP_PORT, HTTP_PORT | Game and lobby ports; Kunos' manual uses 9600, 9600 and 8081 |
| PICKUP_MODE_ENABLED | 1 for pickup mode, the recommended setting |
| LOOP_MODE | 1 to cycle through sessions continuously |
| SUN_ANGLE | Time of day on track |
| WELCOME_MESSAGE | A message shown to drivers when they join |
Sessions, Pickup Mode and the Grid
The server runs a sequence of sessions: booking, practice, qualifying and race. Each has a length in minutes or laps and a join rule: IS_OPEN set to 0 locks the session, 1 lets anyone join, and 2 allows joining until 20 seconds before the start. You can remove any session you do not need, so a hotlap server might be one long practice.
Kunos' manual recommends pickup mode, where drivers join and take any free car from the entry list, and says booking mode is not fully supported. In pickup mode the entry list needs at least as many CAR_ entries as MAX_CLIENTS, and the grid can never be larger than the number of pit boxes on the chosen circuit. Check that number before you pick a plan.
Assists, Damage, Fuel and Tyres
Realism is a set of server rules. Traction control and ABS each take 0 for off, 1 for cars that have them fitted, or 2 for any car. Stability control and automatic clutch can be allowed or blocked. DAMAGE_MULTIPLIER runs from 0 to 100, and FUEL_RATE and TYRE_WEAR_RATE treat 100 as realistic.
- Tyre blankets: cars leave the pits with tyres at their working temperature.
- Dynamic track: grip builds up as rubber goes down, with settings for the starting level, randomness and how much carries into the next session.
- Weather: one or more weather blocks set the sky, air and road temperatures and wind; with several, the server picks one at random.
- Race extras: mandatory pit windows, reversed grids for a second race, ballast and restrictors.
Adding Mod Cars and Tracks
The server does not need a whole mod, only the files it uses to check players. For a car that is the data.acd file or the data folder; some cars need nothing at all. For a track it is the surfaces.ini file inside a data folder.
- Stop the server and open the File Manager, or connect over SFTP.
- For a car, create content/cars/<exact car folder name> and upload data.acd or the data folder.
- For a track, create content/tracks/<exact track folder name>/data and upload surfaces.ini.
- Add the car to CARS= and entry_list.ini, or set TRACK= to the new circuit, and start the server.
Players need the same mods, with the same folder names. Share a download link with your league, or let Content Manager fetch missing content when drivers join.
Content Manager, CSP and AssettoServer
Much of today's online Assetto Corsa runs on community tools, none of them made by Kunos. Content Manager is a replacement launcher with a server browser, favourites and missing content download. Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) adds graphics and physics features, and its server extra options, hidden in the welcome message, let a server set extra rules, a pit limiter, weather and more for drivers who run CSP.
AssettoServer is an open-source replacement for the official server, built around freeroam with AI traffic and dynamic weather for CSP users. It suits cruising and traffic servers rather than league racing. Because it replaces Kunos' server, talk to our support team before you switch.
Slots, Bandwidth and Memory
Kunos' manual warns against running more slots than your upload bandwidth can carry, which is one of the main reasons to host a race server in a data centre rather than at home. Memory matters far less: a race server is light. So every plan includes the same 5GB, which leaves room for AC Server Manager, plugins and busy lobbies.
Grid size is limited by the track, not just the plan. Pick a plan that fits the pit lane of the circuits you race most, and use the order form's slider if you need a grid size between our plans.
Running a Race Night
On the night, the admin password does the work. Log in with /admin and the password in chat, move the event on with /next_session, remove problems with /kick or /ban_id, and balance a field with /ballast or /restrictor. A welcome message is the place for the rules, the stewarding policy and your Discord link.
Between events, change the track and car list in the config files, restart the server and check the log for any car or track it could not load. Back up your configs before a big change of calendar, and schedule a restart before each race night so every event starts clean.
What to Compare Before You Rent an Assetto Corsa Server
Seven things a league should check before paying for a server.
- Grid sizes on offerMake sure you can match your grid to your circuits' pit boxes, and grow it later.
- File access for modsYou need to upload car and track data yourself, so check you get a file manager and SFTP.
- Config file accessDirect access to server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini matters more than a simplified form.
- Ping to your driversTest from where your league races; close racing punishes latency.
- Server toolsA web manager and scheduled restarts make weekly events much easier.
- Bandwidth and protectionA data centre connection and DDoS filtering keep a race running on a busy night.
- TermsCompare monthly against longer terms, and check for setup fees and contracts.
