Running a CoD2 Server in 2026
Call of Duty 2 launched on 25 October 2005, and two decades later its multiplayer is still played on servers that players rent and run themselves. There is no matchmaking to fall back on, so the server is the community. Regulars return for a particular rotation, a familiar admin team and rules they like, whether that is rifles only, realism or plain Team Deathmatch.
Running the server at home is possible, but it ties up a PC, needs a port opened on the router and shares your upload with every player on the map. Hosting it in a data centre removes those problems. The server has a permanent address, steady bandwidth and DDoS filtering, and it stays online when your own PC is off.
The upside of an older game is stability. CoD2 is no longer patched, so once your configuration and mods work they keep working for as long as you like.
Patched or 1.0: Choosing the Right Version
The most common mistake with a new CoD2 server is a version mismatch. The game received several patches after release, and a client can only join a server on exactly the same version.
| Question | Patched server (this page) | Ver 1.0 server |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Players on a current Steam copy | Groups that never patched the game |
| Order from | The plans on this page | The separate Call of Duty 2 - Ver 1.0 product |
| Mods | Mods made for the patched game | Mods made for 1.0 |
Understanding server.cfg
A CoD2 server takes its settings from server.cfg, read when it starts. Each line uses set, a variable name and a value. You edit the file in the panel's config editor and restart to apply your changes.
| Setting | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sv_hostname | Server name in the browser | Your clan name with colour codes |
| rcon_password | Remote admin password | A long private string |
| g_password | Password needed to join | Blank for a public server |
| sv_maxclients | Maximum players | Your plan's slot count or fewer |
| g_gametype | Mode at start-up | dm, tdm, sd, ctf or hq |
| sv_mapRotation | Modes and maps in order | gametype tdm map mp_carentan |
| fs_game | Mod folder to load | The folder name of your mod |
| sv_allowDownload | Lets players fetch missing files | 1 when you use custom content |
Score and time limits are set per mode with variables that start with scr_, the mode and the limit, for example scr_tdm_scorelimit or scr_sd_timelimit. Change one at a time and test it, so you always know which line caused a problem.
Game Types and the Classic Maps
CoD2 multiplayer pits the Axis against the Allies across North Africa, Normandy and the Eastern Front. Five standard modes cover most servers:
- Deathmatch (dm): every player for themselves.
- Team Deathmatch (tdm): the busiest public mode, first team to the score limit wins.
- Search and Destroy (sd): one life per round, bombs to plant and defuse, the clan favourite.
- Capture the Flag (ctf): steal the enemy flag and bring it home.
- Headquarters (hq): capture and hold a radio while the other side tries to take it.
Map files follow the mp_ naming pattern, such as mp_toujane, mp_carentan, mp_burgundy, mp_matmata and mp_brecourt. Smaller maps suit Search and Destroy with 10 to 16 players, while the open desert and countryside maps carry 32 players comfortably in Team Deathmatch or Headquarters.
Writing a Rotation Step by Step
- List the maps and modes you want, in the order players should meet them.
- Write them as one line: gametype tdm map mp_carentan gametype sd map mp_toujane and so on.
- Paste the line into sv_mapRotation in the config editor and save.
- Restart the server and watch the console as the first map loads.
- Use rcon map_rotate to step through each entry and confirm none fails.
The server stops at the first entry it cannot load, so a single typo in a map name can strand players on one map all night. Custom maps must be uploaded before they go into the rotation, and every player needs a copy, either installed already or downloaded from the server.
Admin and RCON Without Extra Tools
Admin rights in CoD2 come from one thing: the RCON password. Anyone who logs in with it can control the server from the console, so give it only to people you trust and change it when your admin team changes.
| Console command | Result |
|---|---|
| rcon login password | Starts your admin session |
| rcon status | Shows each player and their number |
| rcon kick name | Removes a player by name |
| rcon clientkick 3 | Removes the player in slot 3 |
| rcon map mp_matmata | Loads a map straight away |
| rcon map_rotate | Moves to the next rotation entry |
Larger communities often run an admin bot that reads the server log and assigns admin levels. It connects over RCON from your side, so it works with a hosted server unchanged. When you are away from the game, the panel's console sends the same commands.
Installing Mods and .iwd Files
CoD2 packs its content in .iwd files, which are zip archives with a different extension. Mods, custom maps and sound packs all arrive this way. A server mod usually lives in its own folder, while a single custom map is often dropped into main.
- Read the mod's instructions to see which folder its files belong in.
- Upload them with FTP or the File Manager.
- For a folder mod, set fs_game to the folder name and restart.
- Switch on sv_allowDownload so players without the files can get them.
- Check the console after the restart and join once yourself before announcing it.
Large downloads through the game itself are slow, so many communities also place the files on web space and point the server to it with sv_wwwDownload and sv_wwwBaseURL. Keep a backup of the working server before each mod change, so trying a new rule set never costs you the old one.
What to Compare Before You Rent a CoD2 Server
Offers for a 2005 shooter look much alike. Here is what separates a server that works from one that frustrates.
- Both versions on offerA host should sell patched and 1.0 servers, so you can match whatever your players run.
- Real config accessYou need server.cfg and your own RCON password, not a short list of web form options.
- FTP for .iwd filesMods and maps are files. Without FTP or a file manager you are stuck with stock CoD2.
- Ping to your playersTest the locations from where your community lives before you buy.
- CPU speedThe server uses one fast core. Clock speed shows up as steady hit registration in a full lobby.
- Honest pricingCompare the price per slot, and check you are not paying for memory the game will never use.
- No lock-inCheck for setup fees and minimum terms, and prefer monthly billing you can cancel.
