What United Offensive Adds to Call of Duty
Call of Duty: United Offensive is the expansion for the original Call of Duty, developed by Gray Matter Interactive and published by Activision in September 2004. The campaign puts you in the boots of American, British and Russian soldiers at the Battle of the Bulge, the invasion of Sicily and the Battle of Kursk, across 13 new missions in three campaigns.
Multiplayer is where the expansion lives on. United Offensive added 11 new multiplayer maps and three new modes, Domination, Capture the Flag and Base Assault, and brought vehicles, flamethrowers, deployable machine guns and artillery strikes into the game. Many players remember UO as the moment Call of Duty matches grew from tight infantry fights into larger battles, and that is still the reason communities keep a server running.
Why Run a UO Server in 2026
United Offensive is more than twenty years old and still sold on Steam alongside the original Call of Duty. The players who stay with it tend to be loyal: clans that have played together for years, communities built around a favourite realism mod, and people who simply prefer how a 2004 shooter feels. For them, a reliable server is the whole point.
A server of your own gives you the rotation, the rules and the mod list. It also gives you a stable place to meet, which matters for an older game where you cannot rely on a crowded server list. Share the address in your Discord or on your clan site, set a schedule for match nights, and the server becomes the community's home.
1.51, 1.41 and What Players Need
United Offensive was patched several times after release, and communities did not all move at the same pace. That is why our order form lists two servers: the 1.51 server this page sells, and a 1.41 server for groups that stayed on the older patch. The server and the players should run the same patch, so the simplest test is to ask your regulars which version their game shows, then order to match.
- Most groups: the 1.51 server on this page.
- Groups still on 1.41: the 1.41 server, a separate product in the same store.
- Every player: United Offensive plus the original Call of Duty, which the Steam version requires.
Slots by Game Mode
The right slot count depends on what you play. Search and Destroy and clan practice work best with smaller teams, so 24 slots is plenty and leaves room for spectators and substitutes. Domination and Capture the Flag want more bodies to cover the objectives, which is why 32 slots is our all-round plan.
Base Assault on the larger maps needs teams big enough to attack and defend at once, so 42 slots suits it. The 64 slot plan is for event nights and communities that regularly fill a full server. Memory is not the limit at any size: every plan includes 5GB, many times what a 2004 server uses. Other sizes from 18 to 64 slots are on the order form if your group sits between these plans.
server.cfg Basics
A UO server reads its settings from a config file, usually server.cfg, executed when the server starts. Each line sets one variable. These are the ones nearly every server changes first; edit them in the panel's config editor and restart.
| Variable | Set it to |
|---|---|
| sv_hostname | The server name players see in the list |
| sv_maxclients | Your slot count, or fewer for a smaller match |
| g_gametype | The mode the server starts in |
| sv_maprotation | The list of game type and map pairs to cycle through |
| g_password | A join password, or empty for a public server |
| rcon_password | A long private password for remote admin |
| sv_allowdownload | 1 if players should fetch custom files from the server |
Each mode has its own time and score limits, in variables named after the mode with an scr_ prefix. Adjust a single value, restart and test before you touch the next, and keep a working config safe in the Backup Manager.
Building a Rotation Around the New Modes
The rotation decides what players get when one map ends and the next begins. A good UO rotation mixes the expansion's modes so the server never feels stuck on one rhythm: a Domination map, then Capture the Flag, then a Base Assault map for the big push.
- Choose your maps, give each one a mode, and decide the running order.
- Enter that order in sv_maprotation, one game type and one map per entry.
- Put custom maps on the server before they appear in the list.
- Restart, then check the Web Console for errors while the opening map starts.
- Skip forward with rcon map_rotate until every entry has loaded once.
One misspelt map name is enough to break the cycle, so try out a new rotation on a quiet afternoon rather than on match night.
Running Matches with RCON
Admin control comes from RCON. Set rcon_password in server.cfg, and anyone who knows it can run server commands from their game console by typing rcon before the command. Share it with as few people as possible, and pick a new one when someone leaves the admin team.
- rcon status lists the players and their slot numbers.
- rcon clientkick followed by a number removes that player.
- rcon map followed by a map name loads that map now.
- rcon map_rotate moves to the next entry in the rotation.
Away from the game, type the same commands into the panel's Web Console, handy for a quick map change from your phone.
Maps, Mods and Backups
Custom maps and mods are files you upload to the server with the File Manager or SFTP. Players who do not have them can download them when they connect if sv_allowdownload is on, but large files make for slow joins, so keep the custom content to what your community actually plays.
Before you change anything big, such as a new mod, a new rotation or a different version, take a snapshot in the Backup Manager. Our offsite copies of the last 7 days are a second safety net, and a restore takes only a few clicks and a restart.
What to Compare Before You Rent a UO Server
Old Call of Duty servers look alike on a price list. These are the details that decide how your community gets on with one.
- The right patchMake sure the host sells the version your players run, 1.51 or 1.41.
- Full file accessYou need to edit server.cfg and upload maps and mods yourself.
- RCON and a web consoleCheck that you can run commands from the game and from a browser.
- Backups you can restoreLook for snapshots you control, so a broken config is never more than a click away from fixed.
- Locations near your playersPing decides every firefight. Test it before you choose.
- Billing termsCompare monthly and longer terms, and check for setup fees or minimum contracts.
