SWAT 4 Server Hosting Guide: Running a Server Today
SWAT 4 is two decades old, yet squads still gather to clear rooms the slow, careful way. This guide covers what changes when you run your own server in 2026: how players connect now that GameSpy is gone, which version to pick, how many slots to buy, and how to look after settings, mods and backups.

Why a SWAT 4 Squad Runs Its Own Server
When one player hosts a SWAT 4 game from their own PC, the session lives and dies with that machine. If the host's connection wobbles, everyone lags; if the host has to leave, the mission ends for the whole element. A dedicated server separates the game from any one player. It runs on its own hardware, keeps the same address from week to week, and is there whether the usual host is online or not.
There is a second reason that matters more for SWAT 4 than for most games. GOG's support article for the Gold Edition says its copy can only create LAN games, and that choosing an Internet game may ask for a CD key. A hosted server sidesteps that: the squad simply joins an address that is already online, instead of someone wrestling with home hosting, router ports and an upload speed that was never meant for a full team.
Owning the server also means owning the rules. You decide the map list, whether a password keeps it private, and when it restarts. For a group that plays the same night every week, that consistency is most of the value.
How Players Connect Now That GameSpy Has Gone
SWAT 4's built-in server list depended on GameSpy, and GOG's support team confirms that service is no longer available. That changes how you share a server, not whether you can play. Every player connects by address, which is quick once they have done it once.
- Copy the IP and port from the front page of your control panel.
- Post them, plus any join password, wherever your squad talks.
- Players launch SWAT 4 and choose Join Game from the main menu.
- They pick Direct IP, type the address and press the tick to connect.
GOG's article also points players to swat4stats.com for finding servers, and mentions GameRanger as another option for playing together. Neither is needed for your own squad, because a fixed address is all they require.
Choosing a Version: 1.0, 1.1, Gold and the Expansion
Copies of SWAT 4 come from different eras: original retail discs, the updated 1.1 build, and the Gold Edition that GOG sells today, which bundles the base game with The Stetchkov Syndicate. Our SWAT 4 product supports the 1.0, 1.1 and Gold versions, so the job is to match the server to what your players actually run.
| Your squad plays | What to order | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| The base game, any supported build | SWAT 4 (this page) | Confirm the build in a ticket if players are mixed |
| The Gold Edition from GOG, base campaign and maps | SWAT 4 (this page) | Gold covers the base game as well as the expansion |
| The Stetchkov Syndicate | SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate | A separate product on our order form |
If half the group bought the Gold Edition recently and the other half still has an old disc, settle on one version before ordering. A short poll in the group chat saves a frustrating first evening of failed connections.
Picking a Slot Count for Co-op and Team Play
GOG describes SWAT 4 as having several co-op and competitive multiplayer modes, and the right slot count depends on which ones your group enjoys. A co-op squad working through missions rarely wants a crowd; a competitive night with two full teams needs more room.
- 10 slots: enough for a regular co-op element plus a couple of friends who drop in. Our entry plan, at the lowest price.
- 16 slots: two sides of eight for team matches, or one big group with seats to spare for spectators and late arrivals.
- Your own number: the slider on the order form takes anything from 10 to 32, priced per slot, if your community sits outside those two sizes.
You can change the slot count later from the client area, so there is no need to guess big on day one. Start with the size your group fills most weeks and grow when the server starts turning people away.
Server Settings, Passwords and Restarts
Most of what makes a server feel like yours lives in its settings files: the name players see, the join password, the maps in rotation and the rules for each round. Open them in the panel's config file editor, change a value, save, and restart the server so it reads the new file.
- Keep a copy of a working settings file before you experiment, either with the backup manager or by downloading it over SFTP.
- Use a join password for private practice and remove it on open nights.
- Schedule a restart for the small hours so the server begins each evening with a clean start.
- Watch the web console after any change; a typo usually shows up there within seconds.
If you share admin duties, agree on who changes what. Two people editing the same file on the same evening is the most common way a perfectly good server stops starting.
Mods and Custom Maps on a SWAT 4 Server
Fans have kept SWAT 4 fresh with custom maps and larger mods for years. On a hosted server you install them yourself, with full file access through the File Manager, FTP or SFTP.
- Take a snapshot of the working server with the backup manager.
- Read the mod's own install notes and upload the files where it says.
- Restart and check the web console for errors.
- Send the squad the exact same mod download so their game matches the server.
Mods that change maps, equipment or rules normally have to be on every player's PC as well as on the server. Pin the download link next to the server address, and when you update a mod, tell everyone before the next session.
Backups, Moving Servers and Choosing a Location
Two layers of backup protect your setup. The backup manager in the panel takes a snapshot whenever you ask and restores it in a couple of clicks, which is ideal before a mod install or a big settings change. Behind that, we keep offsite copies for the last 7 days in case something goes wrong that you only notice later.
Coming from another host or a home server? Upload your settings files and any mods over SFTP, restart, and check that the name, password and map list came across as expected.
Location matters in a game where a split second decides who reacts first. We offer locations across the UK, France, Germany, the United States and Australia, all at the same price. Run the ping test from the PC you play on, and if your squad is spread out, choose the spot with the fairest result for everyone rather than the best result for one person.
What to Check Before Renting a SWAT 4 Server
Old games are easy to list and harder to support well. These are the questions that separate a usable SWAT 4 server from one that only looks cheap.
- Which builds are supportedMake sure the host names the versions it runs. A server on a different build from your squad is no use at all.
- Expansion handlingCheck whether The Stetchkov Syndicate is offered, and whether it is a separate product or a setting on the same server.
- A stable addressWith no master server, players rely on Direct IP. An address that never changes is worth more here than in most games.
- File accessFTP or SFTP and a file editor are essential for custom maps, mods and settings, so confirm they are included.
- Slot flexibilityLook for a host that lets you pick an exact slot count and change it later, rather than forcing a large plan.
- Backups you controlFind out whether you can restore a snapshot yourself, and how many days of offsite copies are kept.
- Billing termsCompare monthly and longer terms, and look out for setup fees or minimum periods.
