What Smalland Is and Why a Server Helps
Smalland: Survive the Wilds is a multiplayer survival game played at the size of an insect. Most creatures see you as food, so you build encampments on the ground or high in the trees from leaves, twigs and stone, craft armour sets with their own resistances, and learn to tame and ride grasshoppers, damselflies and spiders. Winged armour and a grappling hook turn a garden into a world worth exploring, from the Giant's Fall to the Amber Valleys and the Tyrant's Perch.
You can host a game from your own PC, but then the world only exists while you are playing. A dedicated server keeps it running: friends can log in on their own schedule, crops grow and the encampment stays open, and nobody's PC has to stay on overnight. With crossplay, the same server can also be the place where PC and console friends finally play together.
How Smalland Got Dedicated Servers
Dedicated servers were one of the most requested features of the Early Access years. Official servers went live on 11 December 2023, and on 21 December the team released server files so players could host their own, saying that development schedules had been changed to make it possible. On 16 January 2024 the server became a Steam tool: it appears under Tools in a Steam library, and its options sit in a batch file called start-server.
The server has grown since. The crossplay update of May 2025 added more server parameters for dedicated servers, and later patches brought server browser improvements. On our servers you do not edit that batch file by hand: the panel handles the start-up options, and Steam Update fetches new builds.
Up to 10 Players: Choosing a Plan
Smalland supports up to 10 players in multiplayer, and our order form sells any slot count from 4 to 10. Slots are players online at the same time, not everyone who has ever joined. A couple or a pair of friends fits the 4 slot plan with room for a guest. A group of five or six, the most common size for a co-op night, fits the 6 slot plan. If your guild or Discord regularly fills a session, take the 10 slot plan so nobody is left outside.
The bundled RAM follows the same steps: 5GB, 8GB and 12GB. Memory use in survival games grows with what the world holds, and in Smalland that means encampments, storage, crops and tamed companions in stables. The Underlands and the expanded Caverns also mean more of the map in use at once when the group splits up. If a long-running world starts to feel heavy, add a tier from the client area.
World Settings That Change the Game
Smalland's patches since 1.0 have handed server owners more and more control over how the world plays. These are the settings the developer's notes describe.
| Setting | Added | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting time toggle | April 2024 | Whether crafting takes time or is instant |
| Fuel consumption slider | October 2024 | How quickly fires and stations burn fuel |
| Storm frequency | November 2024 | How often storms sweep the Overland |
| Enemy spawn sliders | January 2025 | The chance of hostile creatures spawning |
| Difficulty templates | September 2025 | Ready-made settings sets to start from |
| Loot on death | Before 1.0 | Whether players drop their loot when they die |
Crossplay Between PC and Console
Crossplay was the headline of 2025's roadmap and arrived on 23 May 2025: players on PC and console can now build, fight and explore in the same world. A hotfix on 28 May added the crossplay option for user-created servers and made servers appear in the console server browser without crossplay being required. The Nintendo Switch 2 version, released on 14 May 2026, supports up to 10 players with full crossplay.
In practice, decide at the start. If anyone in the group plays on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2, switch crossplay on. Keep in mind that platforms do not always update on the same day; in October 2024, for example, the Campsite update reached PC first with consoles following. Before you update a crossplay server, check that console players can update too, or they will be locked out for a while.
Guilds, Encampments and Building
Guilds arrived in April 2025 and suit a hosted world well, because they are server-centric and saved with the game world. Members share a Tree Encampment that stays active on the server as long as one guildmate is online, and what a member can build, customise or revive depends on their role. A revive consumable lets guild members bring each other back mid-adventure.
Building has kept growing too. Most building parts can be scaled from a quarter of their size to double for no extra resources, the Customization and Combat update added a paint brush with colour layers and patterns plus new window parts, and companions now live in stables sized to the creature. All of that ends up in the save, which is one more reason to keep backups of a world you care about.
Keeping Up with Updates
Smalland is still updated in 2026: the Wyrdweaver update on 2 April, a hotfix on 15 April and the Switch 2 release in May. When a patch lands, update the server as well: run Steam Update in the panel and restart, so everyone is on the same build.
The team has also announced Smalland 2: Lost Realms, set in the age before the giants arrived, with a first dev diary on 25 September 2026. It is a separate game with its own world. Your Survive the Wilds server, saves and guilds are not affected by it.
Backups and Restoring a World
Use the Backup Manager before anything risky: a boss fight you expect to lose, a big update or a change of world settings. Schedule a nightly backup as well, and remember that our offsite copies cover the last 7 days. Restoring takes a few clicks and a restart, and the group is back where it was.
Updates have occasionally fixed save problems, such as the November 2025 hotfix that stopped saves being written to a character name file instead of the loaded save. That is exactly the kind of issue where a recent backup turns a lost evening into a short pause.
What to Compare Before You Rent a Smalland Server
Smalland hosting offers look much the same at first. These are the details that matter once your group is settled in.
- Slots up to the real limitSmalland plays with up to 10. You do not need more slots than that, so compare price and RAM at the size you will use.
- Crossplay controlMake sure you can switch the crossplay option yourself if anyone plays on console.
- World settings accessLook for a panel where you can change launch options and world settings without a support ticket.
- Backups you can restoreCheck that you can take and restore snapshots yourself, and how long offsite copies are kept.
- Locations you can testRun a ping test from where your players are, consoles included.
- Billing termsCompare monthly and longer terms, and look for setup fees or a minimum contract.
