Why Clubs and Leagues Run Their Own Server
IOSoccer describes itself as a free, non-commercial, competitive third-person online football game, and its competitive life happens in leagues and cups organised by the community, where you play with your club, your national team or a mixed side. Public servers are fine for a kickabout, but a league needs more control than that.
A server of your own gives you a fixed address for fixtures, your own kits on the pitch, the right number of slots for your format and an admin team you trust. It also means training sessions and friendlies can happen whenever your players are free, without hunting for an empty public server.
From Half-Life Mod to IOSoccer 1.0
The game's history is a long one. It started as International Online Soccer, a Half-Life mod, then moved to the Source engine and was re-released in 2008. Its code has since been completely rewritten, and it reached Steam Early Access on 8 June 2018. On 12 June 2026 it left Early Access as a full release, still free and still without microtransactions.
The months since 1.0 have been busy. The team added Korea to the matchmaking regions on 14 June, put expected goals (xG) into the match event JSON on 22 June, added a ten second kick-off countdown and a fifteen second set-piece limit on 18 June, and has kept adjusting keepers, headers, slide tackles, fouls and injury time in small updates since. The most recent on Steam at the time of writing is dated 6 October 2026.
Formats, Slots and Spectators
The Steam page says IOSoccer supports everything from 1 to 11 players per side, with 4v4 and 8v8 as examples. Pick the plan by your biggest regular format, then add the people who are not playing but still need a slot: referees, casters, substitutes and spectators.
| Format | Players | Suggested plan |
|---|---|---|
| 4v4 or 6v6 practice | 8 to 12 | 16 Slots |
| 8v8 | 16 | 16 Slots, or 20 with spectators |
| 9v9 or 10v10 | 18 to 20 | 20 Slots |
| 11v11 | 22 | 24 Slots |
| 11v11 finals and events | 22 plus a crowd | 32 Slots |
Every plan includes the same 5GB of memory, because a match server needs little of it, so the price follows the slot count alone. Larger RAM tiers are on the order form if you ever want them.
Kits, Maps and FastDL
Custom content is part of the game's design: the Steam page invites players to make their own maps, team kits, balls, shoes and keeper gloves. Updates keep adding official kits too, including away kits for Egypt, Poland, Slovenia and Sweden in June 2026 and kits for Greece, Japan, Korea Republic, Morocco and Scotland in July.
- Collect the kits and maps your league uses, and agree on file names so nothing clashes.
- Upload them with SFTP or the File Manager.
- Use our FastDL system so joining players get custom maps and player skins quickly; our knowledge base has the steps.
- Restart the server and join to check that everything appears as it should.
Kits can change during a session too: since the 14 June 2026 update, SourceMod admins can change team kits with commands, which helps when two teams turn up in similar colours.
Match Settings, Keepers and Modes
IOSoccer offers public matches, competitive matches and a warm-up mode, and matches can use AI or human goalkeepers. A league server usually runs competitive matches with human keepers, while a public server might prefer AI keepers so a goal is always defended.
Recent updates changed a lot of match rules, from card decisions for fouls in a team's own defensive third to when injury time ends. If your league has its own rulebook, read the latest update notes before a season starts and adjust your settings, or your players will notice the difference before you do.
Admins, RCON and Fair Matches
The order form asks for an RCON password, which is the key to remote admin on the server. Give it to as few people as possible: your league admins and perhaps one referee per match. Change it when the admin team changes, and use sub user logins in our panel for anyone who only needs to restart the server.
For leagues, the match event JSON is worth knowing about. Since 22 June 2026 it includes expected goals, which makes post-match stats richer for anyone building tables or match reports.
Frequent Updates and Backups
IOSoccer updates often, sometimes several times in a week. When the game patches, players on the new version need the server to match, so run Steam Update in the panel and restart. A scheduled restart at a quiet hour is a good habit on a busy league server.
We keep offsite backups of the last 7 days, and you can restore them from the panel. Take your own snapshot before a new season, a big kit pack or a rule change. If you are moving from another host, copy your config files, maps and kits across, start the server, and play a test match before fixtures begin.
