Black Ops III on PC: Mod Tools, Servers and Patches

Treyarch kept building the PC version of Black Ops III well after launch. Mod tools, a server browser and the unranked dedicated server all arrived through updates, and each one shapes what a hosted server can do today.

Workshop & browser

Mods, Maps and the Browser on Black Ops 3 Server Hosting

Black Ops III is the Call of Duty with official PC mod tools and a Steam Workshop, which is a big part of why people still rent servers for it. Getting found is the other half: Treyarch's Unranked Server Browser does that job.

Maps and mods

Workshop content

Custom maps and mods are published on the Black Ops III Steam Workshop. Treyarch's notes say players do not need the Mod Tools installed to play Workshop items.

Custom maps on the server

Upload the map files through the File Manager or SFTP. According to Treyarch, loading a custom map automatically loads the default usermaps mod and the server then shows in the browser.

Full mods

A larger mod lives in its own folder. Upload it the same way, set the server to load it in the launch settings, and give players the Workshop link so their game matches.

Server browser

Listed in the browser

Servers appear in the Unranked Server Browser, which Treyarch updated to show the mod name and custom game mode name, so players can see what they are joining.

Private lobbies

A server with Party Privacy set to closed is left out of the browser. Use that, or a join password, for scrims and practice.

Medals and logs

Update 19 made medals appear on unranked dedicated servers and added log files through the g_log setting, handy for settling arguments after a match.

Memory check

RAM for Black Ops 3 Server Hosting

Treyarch does not publish memory requirements for the unranked dedicated server, so the figure below is our own sizing. Every server includes 5GB, which suits standard playlists and most custom maps; larger tiers are there for heavy mods.

  • Official maps, custom game rules

    Plan: 18 Slots
    RAM included: 5GB

When to add more: Not needed for a standard playlist.

  • A rotation with Workshop maps

    Plan: 18 Slots
    RAM included: 5GB

When to add more: Usually enough. Check the memory graph on a full lobby.

  • A large mod with new assets

    Plan: 18 Slots
    RAM included: 5GB

When to add more: Step up to 8GB or 12GB if the graph sits near the limit.

RAM tiers on the order form: 5GB (included), 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. Switch tier from the client area later and your files stay in place.

Black Ops 3 Server Hosting Features

What a rented server adds to Black Ops III on PC.

Not tied to a host PC

The lobby stays up when the person who set it up logs off, so the server is there for every session.

Workshop friendly

Run custom maps or a full mod and let the browser tell players what they are joining.

Your playlist

Pick the modes, maps and rules that suit your community instead of public matchmaking.

Safe experiments

Snapshot the server before a rotation change and roll back if players hate it.

Attack filtering

DDoS traffic is stopped before it reaches the server, so a bad loser cannot end the night.

Fast hardware

5.0GHz CPUs and NVMe drives keep map changes quick and a full lobby steady.

Before the first spawn

Black Ops 3 Server Hosting: Know Before You Order

Five things that make the first night go smoothly.

  1. PC only

Treyarch's unranked dedicated server is a Steam tool for the PC version, so this is a server for PC players.

  2. Multiplayer custom games

The browser and server settings Treyarch added are built around Multiplayer custom games and playlists. If Zombies on a server matters to you, ask us before ordering.

  3. Same mod, same version

Players need the Workshop item your server runs. Post the link with the server name so nobody fails to load in.

  4. Keep an official map handy

Leave at least one official map in your rotation, so the server still has something to load if a custom map breaks.

  5. Ports handled

The server runs in our data centre with its ports open, so nobody in your lobby needs to touch a router.

Answers

Black Ops 3 Server Hosting Questions

Straight answers to what Black Ops III server owners ask most.

Setup and access

How fast is my Black Ops 3 server ready?

It is created automatically as soon as payment clears, and the panel login arrives by email. Most people are setting up their playlist within a few minutes.

Is this a ranked server?

No. Treyarch's PC dedicated server is the Unranked Dedicated Server, which runs custom games outside public matchmaking. Players find it in the Unranked Server Browser.

Can console players join?

No. The unranked dedicated server is a Steam tool for the PC version of Black Ops III, so the players on it are PC players.

Which location should I choose?

Use the ping test on this page from the PC you play on. Pick the location with the lowest result for most of your players; all 9 cost the same.

Maps, mods and modes

Can I run Workshop maps and mods?

Yes. Upload the files with the File Manager or SFTP and set the server to load them. Treyarch built the dedicated server for running custom maps and mods.

Do my players need the Mod Tools?

No. Treyarch's notes say the Mod Tools are not needed to play Workshop content. Players only need the same Workshop item that your server runs.

Can I host Zombies?

Treyarch's server browser and server settings are built around Multiplayer custom games. If you want Zombies on a server, open a ticket before ordering and we will tell you what currently works.

How do I keep the server private?

Set a join password in the server settings, or set Party Privacy to closed, which Treyarch says keeps a server out of the browser.

Running the server

What do I do after a Black Ops III patch?

Run Steam Update in the panel and restart so the server matches the game. Take a backup first if you run mods.

Can I see logs of past matches?

Yes. Update 19 lets the server write log files when g_log is enabled. Download them through the File Manager or SFTP.

How are backups handled?

Take snapshots whenever you like with the backup manager in the panel, and rely on our offsite copies covering the last 7 days.

Billing and plans

How much does Black Ops 3 server hosting cost?

The 18 slot plan costs £6.30 a month. The plans table above shows the price for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months, and the longer terms are cheaper per month.

Can I add more RAM or a faster CPU later?

Yes. Upgrade memory, CPU or disk from the client area at any time, and your server files stay where they are.

Is there a minimum term?

No. Monthly billing renews one month at a time and you can cancel whenever you like. Longer terms are paid upfront at a lower monthly rate.

What an Unranked Dedicated Server Is

Call of Duty: Black Ops III came out on PC in November 2015 with three modes: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies. Public matches use Treyarch's matchmaking, but the PC version also lets players run their own lobbies. Update 18, released on 14 December 2016, added the Unranked Dedicated Server to the Tools section of the Steam library, together with a Remote Console tool, so that communities could run servers with their favourite custom maps and mods.

Unranked is the key word. These servers run custom games outside public matchmaking, so they are where communities set their own rules, try Workshop maps and keep a regular lobby going. When a group plays from one person's PC instead, the lobby ends when that person leaves and depends on their home upload. A hosted server keeps a steady connection and stays online between sessions.

Renting moves the hardware, the network and the uptime to us, while you keep control of the playlist, the files and who gets in.

How Players Find Your Server

Update 15.1 in September 2016 introduced the Unranked Server Browser, along with a Server Settings menu in Multiplayer Custom Games that controls how a server is shown there. Treyarch then kept refining it.

  • Mod name: Updates 15.2 and 17 added the mod name to the server details, so players know what they need before joining.
  • Mode name: custom game mode names show in the browser, which helps when you run your own variant.
  • Custom maps: a server that loads a custom map automatically loads the usermaps mod and appears in the browser.
  • Private servers: a server with Party Privacy set to closed is not shown at all.

A clear server name does a lot of the work. Put the mode or map style in it, so the right players click in and the wrong ones keep scrolling.

Building a Playlist and Server Rules

Your playlist decides which modes and maps the server cycles through, and the game settings decide how each match plays. Edit both in the panel's config file editor and restart the server to apply them. Black Ops III has had official custom game variants since its December 2015 update, including Hardcore and CWL rule sets added in February 2016, so you rarely need to start from a blank page.

  1. Back up the current setup with the backup manager.
  2. Change one thing at a time: a map list, a time limit or a mode.
  3. Restart and watch the web console while the first map loads.
  4. Play a round with a friend before you announce the change.

Running Workshop Maps and Mods

Mod support is what keeps Black Ops III busy on PC. The Mod Tools, released as an open beta on 27 September 2016, include the Radiant level editor, APE (the Asset Property Editor), a Mod Tools Launcher and full example maps: the Multiplayer map Combine and the Zombies map The Giant. Creations are shared on the Steam Workshop, and players can use them without installing the tools.

You wantOn the serverPlayers need
A custom map in the rotationUpload the map files; the usermaps mod loads with itThe same map from the Workshop
A full modUpload its folder and set the server to load itThe same mod from the Workshop
Only official mapsNothing extraThe base game and any map packs used

Keep at least one official map in the rotation. If a custom map fails to load after an update, the server still has somewhere to go, and you can fix the broken map without taking the whole lobby down.

Admin Tools, Logs and Private Matches

Most day-to-day admin happens in the control panel. The web console shows the server starting, players joining and maps changing. Treyarch also released a Remote Console tool with the dedicated server for admins who prefer to send commands from their own PC.

Logs are worth switching on. Update 19 lets the server write log files when g_log is enabled, saved under the identities/dedicatedpc/main folder. Download them over SFTP to check who was on the server and what happened in a disputed match. The same update made medals appear on unranked dedicated servers.

For scrims, training and clan nights, keep the server private. A join password stops strangers getting in, and closed Party Privacy keeps the server out of the browser entirely.

Patches, Steam Update and Version Matching

Black Ops III received regular PC updates through 2016, 2017 and 2018. The newest patch notes on the game's Steam announcements page are Update 30, from 30 July 2018, which lists general stability improvements and a security update.

Whenever the game does change, the server has to match it, or players cannot connect. Run Steam Update in the panel, restart the server and join once yourself to confirm it works. If you run a mod, check that the mod still loads after the update before you open the server to everyone.

Slots, Memory and Choosing a Location

Our order form sells Black Ops III servers in one size: 18 slots. That covers full teams for custom games with seats for spectators or players waiting to swap in. Memory comes bundled at 5GB, our own sizing for this server, and larger tiers up to 32GB are on the order form for heavy mods.

Location matters more than raw power in a fast shooter. Run the ping test on this page from the PC you play on, then pick the location that gives most of your lobby a low, steady result. Every location costs the same, so the choice is only about ping.

If your group grows across regions, a second server near the other half of the community is often better than one server that is far from everyone.

Backups and Moving an Existing Server

Your setup is mostly files: the playlist, settings, custom maps and mod folders. The panel's backup manager takes a snapshot whenever you ask, and we keep offsite copies for the last 7 days as a safety net.

Moving from home hosting or another provider is a matter of copying those files. Upload them over SFTP, check the launch settings point at the right mod, restart and join once to confirm everything loads before you share the new server name.

What to Compare Before You Rent a Black Ops III Server

Most offers for this game look alike on paper. These points decide whether the server is still a good fit a few months in.

  1. File access for modsCustom maps and mods need FTP or SFTP and a file editor. Without them, Workshop content is hard to run.
  2. Patch handlingCheck that you can update the server yourself after a PC patch rather than waiting for a ticket.
  3. Memory includedSee how much RAM the base price includes and what a bigger tier costs if you plan to run a large mod.
  4. Location and pingA nearby data centre does more for a fast shooter than any CPU figure. Test it before you buy.
  5. Backups you can restoreMake sure you can roll back a snapshot yourself and know how many days of offsite copies are kept.
  6. Clarity about modesAsk what the server supports for your mode of choice before paying, especially if Zombies matters to you.
  7. Terms and feesCompare monthly and longer terms, and look for setup fees or minimum contracts.
