Engine updates

Day of Defeat Server Hosting After the Half-Life Anniversary Update

Day of Defeat shares its engine with Half-Life, so Valve's Half-Life updates reach DoD servers too. The biggest change in years was the Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update of November 2023.

Plugins and maps

Plugins, Maps and Platforms on Day of Defeat Server Hosting

Day of Defeat is a GoldSrc mod, so the same server add-ons that grew up around Counter-Strike work here, with packs made for DoD.

AMX Mod X

The AMX Mod X project publishes a Mod Pack for Day of Defeat, for admin commands, map votes and gameplay plugins.

Metamod first

AMX Mod X loads through Metamod, so install Metamod, then the AMX Mod X base and the DoD pack.

Custom maps with FastDL

Our FastDL system serves maps and models over the web, so players get them in seconds.

Windows, Mac and Linux players

Steam lists Day of Defeat for Windows, macOS and Linux, and all three play together on the same server.

Valve Anti-Cheat

Steam lists Day of Defeat as VAC enabled, and a VAC-secured server keeps banned accounts out.

The Source remake

Day of Defeat: Source is a separate game with its own server; see our Day of Defeat: Source server hosting.

Memory, sized for you

RAM for Day of Defeat Server Hosting

Valve publishes no memory figure for HLDS, and a GoldSrc server uses very little. Every plan includes the free 5GB tier, which leaves plenty of headroom for plugins.

Day of Defeat Server Hosting Essentials

What to get right on a classic DoD server.

  1. Know which game you need

This server is for the original Day of Defeat on Steam (app 30), not Day of Defeat: Source.

  2. Set up FastDL for custom maps

Without it, players download maps slowly from the game server, and many give up.

  3. Update after Valve patches

Half-Life engine updates also change Day of Defeat; update HLDS from the panel so players can connect.

  4. Back up before plugins

One bad plugin can stop the server starting. A backup gets you back in minutes.

Answers

Day of Defeat Server Hosting FAQ

What players ask before renting a server for the original Day of Defeat.

The game

Is this the original Day of Defeat or Day of Defeat: Source?

The original, released by Valve on 1 May 2003 and running on the Half-Life engine. For the remake, see Day of Defeat: Source server hosting.

Is Day of Defeat still updated?

Valve's last Day of Defeat notice on Steam, in October 2019, was a Half-Life update that reached DoD through shared files. The Half-Life updates of November 2023 also fixed Day of Defeat launching and updated the dedicated server.

Can Mac and Linux players join?

Yes. Steam lists Day of Defeat for Windows, macOS and Linux, and they all join the same server.

What is the steam_legacy branch?

When Valve released the Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update in November 2023, it kept the previous build as a public beta branch called steam_legacy, for mods that behave unexpectedly on the new one.

Plans and price

How much does Day of Defeat server hosting cost?

The 12 slot plan is €6.30 a month with 5GB of RAM. Longer billing terms lower the monthly price.

Which size should I choose?

12 slots suits six-a-side clan matches, 16 a small public, 20 a busy public and 33 a crowded one. You can change size later in the client area.

Why is the RAM the same on every plan?

A GoldSrc server needs very little memory, so the free 5GB tier is plenty at every size and you only pay for slots.

Is there a contract?

No. Monthly billing renews month by month and you can cancel whenever you like.

Running the server

Can I install AMX Mod X?

Yes. Upload Metamod, AMX Mod X and the Day of Defeat mod pack from the AMX Mod X site over SFTP, then restart the server.

How do players get my custom maps?

Set up our FastDL system, which serves maps, models and sounds from a web server so players download them quickly. Our knowledge base explains it step by step.

How do players connect?

Add the server's IP and port to Steam favourites, or open the console and type connect followed by the address.

How quickly is the server ready?

Usually within 20 minutes of payment, with the panel login sent by email.

Day of Defeat Server Hosting: A Guide for Classic DoD

Day of Defeat began life as a Half-Life mod and became one of Valve's own games. This guide covers what makes a classic DoD server tick, from HLDS and Valve's anniversary update to plugins, custom maps and a sensible setup for your first night.

Why Players Still Run Classic Day of Defeat

Day of Defeat puts two teams, Axis and Allies, into the European theatre of the Second World War. Steam describes five ways to fight: light, assault and heavy infantry, sniper and machine gunner, each with its own period weapons, and missions based on real operations where the team has to work together to complete objectives. Valve released it on Steam on 1 May 2003.

Valve later remade the game as Day of Defeat: Source, with new models, physics and lighting, and Valve's own description of the remake talks about taking the classic gameplay of the original and improving it. Plenty of players still prefer the original's feel: its movement, its sound and the maps they learned twenty years ago. A server of your own keeps that version alive for your community, with your rules and your map list.

HLDS: The Server Behind Day of Defeat

Day of Defeat does not have a server program of its own. It runs on the Half-Life Dedicated Server, HLDS, which Valve distributes on Steam as app 90 and which loads Day of Defeat as a mod. That matters in two ways. First, anything Valve changes in the Half-Life engine can change your DoD server, which is why Valve's 2019 Day of Defeat notice simply pointed to the Half-Life update notes. Second, the tools built for HLDS, above all Metamod and AMX Mod X, work on Day of Defeat too.

On our servers HLDS is installed and kept up to date for you. You edit server.cfg and the map cycle in the browser, upload files by SFTP and update the server from the panel. The config rule is the same as on every game we host: stop the server, save the change, then start it again, because changes saved while it runs are not applied.

What the 2023 Half-Life Update Changed

On 17 November 2023 Valve released the Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update. It raised several old engine limits for mod makers, added native Linux improvements and kept the previous build available as a public beta branch called steam_legacy, described as the pre-25th anniversary build, for mods that misbehave on the new one.

Day of Defeat felt the change. Valve's 19 November notes list a fix for the inability to launch Day of Defeat and other mods, the 21 November notes fix UI scaling in Day of Defeat and Team Fortress Classic, and the 22 and 29 November notes say the Half-Life dedicated server application was updated, with updating dedicated servers recommended. In practice, keep the server and your players on the same current build. If a regular cannot connect after a Valve update, the first thing to check is whether the server has been updated too.

Admin Tools With Metamod and AMX Mod X

AMX Mod X is the standard admin and plugin system for GoldSrc servers, and its download page offers a Mod Pack for Day of Defeat alongside the base package. It gives you admin commands, kick and ban tools, map votes and a large library of community plugins. It loads through Metamod, so the order of installation is:

  1. Take a backup of the server from the panel.
  2. Upload Metamod and point the game's plugin loader at it.
  3. Upload the AMX Mod X base package and the Day of Defeat mod pack.
  4. Add yourself as an admin in the AMX Mod X users file.
  5. Restart the server and check the console log for errors.

Add plugins one at a time after that. If the server will not start, the log usually names the plugin that failed, and the backup puts you back where you were.

Custom Maps and FastDL

A custom map rotation is half the charm of a long-running DoD server, but a player who does not have the map has to download it before they can join. Straight from the game server, that download is slow. FastDL fixes it: the map, its textures, models and sounds are served from a web server instead, so the download takes seconds and players stay.

Our knowledge base has a step-by-step guide to the FastDL system for maps, models and custom content. Upload each map to the server and to FastDL, add it to the map cycle, and test it yourself on a client that does not already have it before you put it in the rotation.

Choosing a Size for Your Server

ServerPlanWhy
Clan, scrims and practice12 SlotsSix a side, the classic competitive format
Small public with regulars16 SlotsEight a side with every role covered
Busy public20 SlotsTen a side on the larger maps
Crowded public33 SlotsThe largest size we sell for DoD

Every plan includes 5GB of RAM, the same 5.0GHz CPU and NVMe storage. Starting small costs little: you can add slots from the client area as your community grows, and the order form also sells 10, 14 and 18 slots in between.

Your First Night on the Server

  • Pick the location: run the ping test on this page and choose the lowest result for most of your players.
  • Name it: stop the server and set the hostname, an RCON password and, for a private server, a join password in server.cfg.
  • Share the address: players add the IP and port to Steam favourites or type connect and the address in the console.
  • Back it up: once it is set up the way you like, take a backup so you always have a clean copy.
  • Automate the chores: schedule a nightly restart and Steam updates, so the server is ready whenever your players are.

Our support team answers tickets 24/7 and can help with HLDS, plugins and FastDL if you get stuck.

What to Check Before You Rent a Day of Defeat Server

For a GoldSrc game, the things that matter are access and upkeep.

  1. The right Day of DefeatMake sure the host runs the original on HLDS, not only the Source remake.
  2. Full file accessYou need SFTP to install Metamod, AMX Mod X and custom maps.
  3. FastDL includedWithout fast downloads, a custom map rotation drives players away.
  4. Updates you controlAfter a Half-Life engine update you want to update the server the same day.
