What Your Own Server Lets You Decide
Beasts of Bermuda asks players to live as a dinosaur in a player-created ecosystem, surviving storms and predators in the Bermuda Triangle while growing to a large size. Sastrei Studios' Steam page also promises server management tools: settable species limits, console commands and an observer mode.
Those tools are the point of running your own server. On a public official server, someone else decides which creatures are allowed, how big groups can be and which rules apply. On yours, every one of those choices is yours, and a community can build its own identity around them: a realism server, a fast combat arena or a quiet island for friends.
The dedicated server is a free Steam tool, app 882430, and runs on Windows. We host it for you on 5.0GHz processors with NVMe storage, so there is no SteamCMD to install, no ports 7777, 8888 and 27015 to open on a home router and no PC left on all night.
Start-up Values and Game.ini
A Beasts of Bermuda server takes its settings from two places. Basic choices are start-up values written as -key value; everything else lives in Game.ini, under BeastsOfBermuda/Saved/Config/WindowsServer.
| Start-up value | Default | What it sets |
|---|---|---|
| -MapName | Test_Performance | The island the server loads |
| -GameMode | Life_Cycle | Life_Cycle, Free_Roam or Combat |
| -SessionName | Your choice | The server name, with _ for spaces |
| -ServerPassword | Your choice | A password without spaces |
| -NumPlayers | 32 | The number of player slots |
| -Port and -QueryPort | 7777 and 27015 | Network ports, set for you on our servers |
Game.ini has two sections: ServerGameInstance for server rules and SaveSystem for autosaves. Edit it with the server stopped, keep a copy of the version that worked and restart afterwards. The old ?key=value way of passing start-up values stopped working in October 2021, so ignore older guides that still use it.
Choosing a Map and a Game Mode
The mode sets the pace of the whole server. Sastrei's Steam page describes the three like this.
| Mode | How players start | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Life_Cycle | As juveniles | Faster growth, harder resource management |
| Free_Roam | As juveniles | Slower growth, easier resource management |
| Combat | As adults | Fights on smaller deathmatch maps |
For the map, the official wiki lists Ancestral_Plains, Forest_Island, Rival_Shores and Bloodbath alongside a Test_Performance default. That list predates Temporal Drift, the snowy alpine valley added in December 2025, so check the current map names in the patch notes when you switch. Combat suits the smaller arena maps; Life Cycle and Free Roam suit the big islands.
Balancing Species and Groups
A server where half the players pick the same apex predator stops being an ecosystem. Game.ini gives you four levers to prevent it.
- CreatureLimits: one entry per species with PercentAllowed, the share of players who may play it, a GroupLimit and bRequiresVeteran.
- bUseHardGroupLimits: switches group limits to hard limits.
- GrowthLimit: caps how far creatures can grow on the server, given in the wiki's example as 100.0f.
- GrowthLimits: since September 2025, a growth cap per specialisation, for example a different limit for each form of a species.
Change limits between sessions rather than mid-evening, and tell players before you do. Players who planned around one rule set take a sudden change badly.
Admins, Ranks and Command Rules
Admins are listed in Game.ini with a ServerAdmins line holding each person's SteamID64 and an AdminRank, DefaultAdmin in the wiki's examples. Save the file and restart the server for the change to apply.
For a team, AdminRanks defines ranks with a RankLevel, where a higher number means more authority, and AdminCommandRules sets the lowest rank allowed to use each command, such as KickPlayer, BanPlayer or ControlWeather. ReservedAdminSlots, 2 by default, holds places back for your staff.
In game, admins open the console with the backtick key or type // in chat. The wiki's command list includes KickPlayer, BanPlayer, UnBanPlayer, MutePlayer, Announce, ForceStorm and spectating tools, but it was last revised in 2021, so confirm a command in the console before relying on it.
Discord, Steam Groups and Chat
Several Game.ini settings exist purely to build a community around a server.
- DiscordLink adds your Discord invite link.
- SteamGroupName with bRequiresSteamGroupToJoin limits the server to members of your Steam group, useful for a whitelisted island.
- bDisplayIntroMessage turns the intro message on or off.
- bDisableGlobalChat turns off global chat for a more immersive server.
- PlayerChatColors and PlayerChatTags set chat colours and tags for players.
A Steam group requirement is the simplest way to run a private community without sharing a password around: approve members in the group, and only they can join.
Saves, Wipes and Updates
The server writes its data to disk on a timer set by AutosaveTime, 120 seconds by default and never less than 30. The wiki also documents a command to force a save and one to flush the server's save data. Flushing is a wipe: players who had a save on the server have to start again, so announce it and take a Backup Manager snapshot first.
Updates are frequent and often required. Sastrei's patches in January and February 2026, aimed at cheating, had to be installed by every server and every player. Use Steam Update after a patch, or a Scheduled Task that updates and restarts during your quietest hour, so players are never locked out by a version mismatch.
Sastrei also tests updates in public test events, such as one in September 2026 that previewed a Favor Store. Features from a test can change before release, so plan around the patch notes, not the preview.
Choosing a Slot Count
The server ships with 32 player slots as its -NumPlayers default, and that is a sensible size for most new communities. Smaller islands feel lonely with too many slots, and a crowded map needs species limits to stay balanced.
| Community | Plan | RAM |
|---|---|---|
| Friends and a rival pack | 20 Slots | 5GB |
| A new public server | 32 Slots | 8GB |
| A growing community | 50 Slots | 12GB |
| A busy public server | 75 Slots | 16GB |
Memory rises with every plan, so you never size RAM separately. If you outgrow 75 players, the order form sells up to 200 slots; ask our support team which memory suits a server that size.
What to Compare Before Renting a Beasts of Bermuda Server
The server program is the same everywhere. These are the differences that matter to an island.
- Game.ini accessSpecies limits and admin ranks need the real file, not a short settings form.
- Fast updatesSastrei's patches can require servers to update with players. Check updating is one click.
- Memory includedCompare the RAM that comes with each slot count, not only the starting price.
- Backups before wipesA flush cannot be undone without a backup. Check snapshots are included.
- Ping to your playersRun a ping test from where your community lives before choosing.
