Maps, modes & rules

Maps, Modes and Species Rules on Beasts of Bermuda Server Hosting

Most of what makes one Beasts of Bermuda server different from another comes from settings the game already has: the map, the mode, which creatures are allowed and how admins keep order.

Pick the map

-MapName chooses the island. The official wiki lists Ancestral_Plains, Forest_Island, Rival_Shores and Bloodbath among the maps.

Pick the mode

-GameMode takes Life_Cycle, the default, Free_Roam or Combat. Each changes how players spawn and grow.

Limit the species

CreatureLimits in Game.ini sets, per species, the share of players allowed, the group limit and whether a veteran is required.

Cap the growth

GrowthLimit caps how far creatures grow, and since September 2025 admins can set GrowthLimits per specialisation too.

Memory, sorted

How Much RAM Beasts of Bermuda Server Hosting Needs

Sastrei publishes no memory figure for the dedicated server; its Steam page asks 8GB of the player's own PC as a minimum. Our plans start at the free 5GB tier and step up with the player count, because more creatures on the map means more to keep track of.

Before the first hatchling

Beasts of Bermuda Server Hosting Essentials Before You Order

Five things that save time on the first night.

  1. Settings live in two places

Map, mode, name, password and slots are start-up values. Species, admins, chat and autosave are in Game.ini.

  2. Use -key value

Start-up values are written as -MapName Ancestral_Plains, separated by spaces. The old ?key=value style stopped working in October 2021.

  3. Never leave the console unlocked

Setting bConsoleLocked to false gives every player default admin. The wiki says to use it only for tests.

  4. Admins need a SteamID64

Add a ServerAdmins line with each admin's SteamID64 to Game.ini, save and restart the server.

  5. No spaces in names or passwords

Use an underscore for spaces in -SessionName. -ServerPassword cannot contain spaces at all.

Answers

Beasts of Bermuda Server Hosting Questions

What new island owners ask us most.

Getting started

How soon is my Beasts of Bermuda server online?

Setup starts automatically once payment clears, and your panel login arrives by email. Most servers are ready within minutes.

How do I name and password the server?

Set -SessionName, with underscores instead of spaces, and -ServerPassword, which cannot contain spaces, in the Commandline Manager, then restart.

Which maps can I run?

Choose one with -MapName. The official wiki lists Ancestral_Plains, Forest_Island, Rival_Shores and Bloodbath, and Temporal Drift was added in December 2025.

Rules and balance

What is the difference between the game modes?

In Life Cycle, players hatch as juveniles and grow in a faster setting with harder survival. Free Roam grows them more slowly with easier survival. Combat spawns adults on smaller deathmatch maps.

Can I limit how many players pick one species?

Yes. CreatureLimits in Game.ini sets a share of players per species, a group limit and an optional veteran requirement.

How often does the server save?

AutosaveTime controls it. The wiki gives a default of 120 seconds and a minimum of 30.

Can I wipe the server?

Yes, the wiki documents a flush command that wipes the server's save; players who had a save there have to start again. Take a backup first.

Admins

How do I become admin?

Add ServerAdmins=(UserSteamId64=your ID,AdminRank="DefaultAdmin") to Game.ini with your 64-bit Steam ID, save and restart the server.

Which admin commands are there?

Open the console with the backtick key or type // in chat. The official wiki lists commands such as KickPlayer, BanPlayer, Announce and ForceStorm; it was last revised in 2021, so check them in game.

Can moderators have fewer rights than admins?

Yes. AdminRanks gives each rank a level, and AdminCommandRules sets the lowest rank allowed to use each command.

Plans and billing

How much does Beasts of Bermuda server hosting cost?

The 20 slot plan with 5GB starts at $12.80 a month. Every plan is listed above on monthly, 3, 6 and 12 month billing, with longer terms cheaper per month.

How many players can a server hold?

The server's -NumPlayers start-up value defaults to 32. Our plans run from 20 to 75 slots, and the order form sells up to 200.

Can I change plan later?

Yes. Change slots or memory from the client area and your island and settings stay as they are. Monthly plans have no minimum term.

What Your Own Server Lets You Decide

Beasts of Bermuda asks players to live as a dinosaur in a player-created ecosystem, surviving storms and predators in the Bermuda Triangle while growing to a large size. Sastrei Studios' Steam page also promises server management tools: settable species limits, console commands and an observer mode.

Those tools are the point of running your own server. On a public official server, someone else decides which creatures are allowed, how big groups can be and which rules apply. On yours, every one of those choices is yours, and a community can build its own identity around them: a realism server, a fast combat arena or a quiet island for friends.

The dedicated server is a free Steam tool, app 882430, and runs on Windows. We host it for you on 5.0GHz processors with NVMe storage, so there is no SteamCMD to install, no ports 7777, 8888 and 27015 to open on a home router and no PC left on all night.

Start-up Values and Game.ini

A Beasts of Bermuda server takes its settings from two places. Basic choices are start-up values written as -key value; everything else lives in Game.ini, under BeastsOfBermuda/Saved/Config/WindowsServer.

Start-up valueDefaultWhat it sets
-MapNameTest_PerformanceThe island the server loads
-GameModeLife_CycleLife_Cycle, Free_Roam or Combat
-SessionNameYour choiceThe server name, with _ for spaces
-ServerPasswordYour choiceA password without spaces
-NumPlayers32The number of player slots
-Port and -QueryPort7777 and 27015Network ports, set for you on our servers

Game.ini has two sections: ServerGameInstance for server rules and SaveSystem for autosaves. Edit it with the server stopped, keep a copy of the version that worked and restart afterwards. The old ?key=value way of passing start-up values stopped working in October 2021, so ignore older guides that still use it.

Choosing a Map and a Game Mode

The mode sets the pace of the whole server. Sastrei's Steam page describes the three like this.

ModeHow players startFeel
Life_CycleAs juvenilesFaster growth, harder resource management
Free_RoamAs juvenilesSlower growth, easier resource management
CombatAs adultsFights on smaller deathmatch maps

For the map, the official wiki lists Ancestral_Plains, Forest_Island, Rival_Shores and Bloodbath alongside a Test_Performance default. That list predates Temporal Drift, the snowy alpine valley added in December 2025, so check the current map names in the patch notes when you switch. Combat suits the smaller arena maps; Life Cycle and Free Roam suit the big islands.

Balancing Species and Groups

A server where half the players pick the same apex predator stops being an ecosystem. Game.ini gives you four levers to prevent it.

  • CreatureLimits: one entry per species with PercentAllowed, the share of players who may play it, a GroupLimit and bRequiresVeteran.
  • bUseHardGroupLimits: switches group limits to hard limits.
  • GrowthLimit: caps how far creatures can grow on the server, given in the wiki's example as 100.0f.
  • GrowthLimits: since September 2025, a growth cap per specialisation, for example a different limit for each form of a species.

Change limits between sessions rather than mid-evening, and tell players before you do. Players who planned around one rule set take a sudden change badly.

Admins, Ranks and Command Rules

Admins are listed in Game.ini with a ServerAdmins line holding each person's SteamID64 and an AdminRank, DefaultAdmin in the wiki's examples. Save the file and restart the server for the change to apply.

For a team, AdminRanks defines ranks with a RankLevel, where a higher number means more authority, and AdminCommandRules sets the lowest rank allowed to use each command, such as KickPlayer, BanPlayer or ControlWeather. ReservedAdminSlots, 2 by default, holds places back for your staff.

In game, admins open the console with the backtick key or type // in chat. The wiki's command list includes KickPlayer, BanPlayer, UnBanPlayer, MutePlayer, Announce, ForceStorm and spectating tools, but it was last revised in 2021, so confirm a command in the console before relying on it.

Discord, Steam Groups and Chat

Several Game.ini settings exist purely to build a community around a server.

  • DiscordLink adds your Discord invite link.
  • SteamGroupName with bRequiresSteamGroupToJoin limits the server to members of your Steam group, useful for a whitelisted island.
  • bDisplayIntroMessage turns the intro message on or off.
  • bDisableGlobalChat turns off global chat for a more immersive server.
  • PlayerChatColors and PlayerChatTags set chat colours and tags for players.

A Steam group requirement is the simplest way to run a private community without sharing a password around: approve members in the group, and only they can join.

Saves, Wipes and Updates

The server writes its data to disk on a timer set by AutosaveTime, 120 seconds by default and never less than 30. The wiki also documents a command to force a save and one to flush the server's save data. Flushing is a wipe: players who had a save on the server have to start again, so announce it and take a Backup Manager snapshot first.

Updates are frequent and often required. Sastrei's patches in January and February 2026, aimed at cheating, had to be installed by every server and every player. Use Steam Update after a patch, or a Scheduled Task that updates and restarts during your quietest hour, so players are never locked out by a version mismatch.

Sastrei also tests updates in public test events, such as one in September 2026 that previewed a Favor Store. Features from a test can change before release, so plan around the patch notes, not the preview.

Choosing a Slot Count

The server ships with 32 player slots as its -NumPlayers default, and that is a sensible size for most new communities. Smaller islands feel lonely with too many slots, and a crowded map needs species limits to stay balanced.

CommunityPlanRAM
Friends and a rival pack20 Slots5GB
A new public server32 Slots8GB
A growing community50 Slots12GB
A busy public server75 Slots16GB

Memory rises with every plan, so you never size RAM separately. If you outgrow 75 players, the order form sells up to 200 slots; ask our support team which memory suits a server that size.

What to Compare Before Renting a Beasts of Bermuda Server

The server program is the same everywhere. These are the differences that matter to an island.

  1. Game.ini accessSpecies limits and admin ranks need the real file, not a short settings form.
  2. Fast updatesSastrei's patches can require servers to update with players. Check updating is one click.
  3. Memory includedCompare the RAM that comes with each slot count, not only the starting price.
  4. Backups before wipesA flush cannot be undone without a backup. Check snapshots are included.
  5. Ping to your playersRun a ping test from where your community lives before choosing.
