Sniper Elite 3 Server Hosting: How to Run a Good Server
Sniper Elite 3 multiplayer is slow, patient and punishing, which is exactly why its players want a well-run server. This guide explains Rebellion's dedicated server, the modes and free maps, how players connect and how to build a rotation people stay for.

Sniper Elite 3 Multiplayer in Brief
Sniper Elite 3 is Rebellion's tactical third-person shooter set in Second World War North Africa, released on Steam on 27 June 2014. Its signature is the ballistics: distance, gravity, wind and even the shooter's heart rate change where a bullet lands, and the X-Ray kill cam shows the result. In multiplayer that turns every match into a game of patience, where the player who spots first and judges the drop best wins.
Steam lists five competitive modes at launch, with XP, medals and ribbons that build up across all of them, plus character, weapon and loadout customisation. Microsoft's Xbox store lists online multiplayer for 2 to 12 players. Rebellion kept adding to it through 2014, with free maps and the return of Capture the Flag.
Rebellion's Dedicated Server
On 26 June 2014 Rebellion announced that the Sniper Elite 3 dedicated server was available through the Steam client and SteamCMD, as AppID 266910. It came with documentation, a command reference and example configuration files, and Rebellion advised even admins who knew the Sniper Elite V2 server to read them, because some features were new.
A dedicated server takes hosting off a player's PC. The match keeps running when anyone leaves, nobody gets a host advantage, and the server sits on a data centre connection. In October 2014 update 1.11 also fixed two dedicated server problems: every supported mode now shows for a level, rather than one being dropped (usually team deathmatch), and servers can be hosted on machines with more than one network adaptor.
On Gaming Deluxe the server is installed for you. You set its name, password and rotation in the Configuration Files editor, update it through Steam from the panel and follow the log when you change something. Stop the server before saving a config change, or it is not applied.
Modes and Free Maps for Your Rotation
Through the summer and autumn of 2014 Rebellion released extra multiplayer maps free to every owner of the game, so a rotation built from them works for everyone without a download or a purchase.
| Map | Released | What Rebellion said |
|---|---|---|
| Lost Valley | 1 August 2014 (update 1.06) | Free to all owners of the game |
| Plantation | 13 August 2014 (update 1.07) | Supports all modes, including No-Cross |
| Outpost Canyon | 4 September 2014 (update 1.09) | High in the Atlas Mountains; all modes including No-Cross |
| Night Watch | 17 September 2014 (update 1.10) | A night map supporting every competitive mode, including Capture the Flag |
| Fracture | 23 October 2014 (update 1.13) | The sixth free map, a No-Cross map in a weapons factory |
Capture the Flag, added in update 1.10 on every map, is the most team-focused mode: one team guards its flag bearer while the other assaults the enemy base, and good snipers still decide the round. No-Cross is the purest sniper duel, with two teams kept apart by the map so the fight is all long range. Mixing a few of each keeps a public server interesting; a clan server for practice may want only one.
How Players Connect
Players reach your server through Steam favourites. Our knowledge base walks through it, and it takes a minute:
- Open the main Steam window and choose View, then Game Servers.
- Switch to the Favourites tab and click Add a Server.
- Enter the query IP and port shown in your control panel and add it to favourites.
- Launch Sniper Elite 3 and open the in-game favourites list; your server is there to join.
For a private server, set a password in the config and share it with your group. Remember to start the server before anyone tries to join: a server that is still starting will not answer, and the address will look wrong.
What About Co-op?
Sniper Elite 3 also has co-op: the whole campaign for two players online, plus two dedicated co-op modes, Overwatch and Survival, and Rebellion added a free Overwatch mission, Twilight Strike, in October 2014. These are played in lobbies that players host. Update 1.12 in October 2014 let co-op lobbies be made public, so they appear in the server list next to the adversarial games, with filters to show or hide them.
That means a rented server is for the competitive side of the game. If your group mainly plays the campaign together, you do not need one; if you want regular, reliable adversarial matches, you do.
Running a Server People Come Back To
- Pick the right location: sniping rewards a steady, low ping, so choose the location closest to most of your players using the ping test on this page.
- Keep the rotation honest: list only modes each map supports, and keep No-Cross and Capture the Flag maps where players expect them.
- Name it clearly: a server name that says the mode and region helps players pick it out of the list.
- Restart it nightly: a scheduled restart in quiet hours keeps a long-running server fresh.
- Back up the config: once the rotation works, take a backup so you can go back to it after an experiment.
Sniper Elite 3 is a finished game: the last PC patch arrived on 1 October 2019. That makes a server easy to look after, because nothing changes under it. If you ever get stuck, our support team answers tickets 24/7.
What to Check Before You Rent a Sniper Elite 3 Server
A few points worth checking with any host.
- The official dedicated serverMake sure the host runs Rebellion's server, not a lobby on someone's PC.
- A sensible sizeTwelve slots is a full match; paying for more adds nothing.
- Ping where your players areLong shots depend on a steady connection, so test before you buy.
- Config accessYou should be able to set the name, password and rotation yourself.
