Configuration Files

Edit the server's ini files in the browser, including DefaultGame.ini, where the final patch made the day and night cycle speed configurable.

Commandline Manager

Start-up options live on the command line, which is where Symmetric Games said to switch on Conquest with Game=Conquest.

File Manager and SFTP

Reach the server's files to edit settings, read logs or keep a copy of the save on your own PC.

Scheduled restarts

The last patch fixed timed restarts set in the ini files, and our Scheduled Tasks can restart the server on a timetable too.

Backups

Back up before experimenting with settings, with our offsite copies of the last 7 days behind you.

Switch Game

If your group moves on, the panel's Switch Game button, where supported, or a support ticket can move the service to another game.

The honest status

Outpost Zero Today: Finished in 2019, Still Playable

Symmetric Games released Outpost Zero into Early Access on 12 July 2018 and left Early Access with a 1.0 patch on 25 July 2019. The last patch, 1.0.10099, arrived on 7 December 2019, and the last Steam announcement was a sale in March 2020. The game is still sold on Steam.

01

What the last patch changed

1.0.10099 fixed the time of day cycle on servers and made its speed configurable, cleaned up dropped items after 10 minutes, improved performance in large bases and fixed timed restarts set in the ini files.

02

A promise that went quiet

In that December 2019 post the developers said they would keep working on performance for servers with large bases over the following weeks. No later patch was released.

03

A build that stays put

The upside of an unchanging game: server and players stay on the same version, with no surprise updates to schedule around.

04

New players can still join

Outpost Zero remains on sale on Steam, so friends who buy it today can join your server.

Modes & admin tools

Game Modes, Rules and Admin Tools for Outpost Zero Server Hosting

Outpost Zero has no Steam Workshop page and we found no official mod tools. What a server owner can shape is the way the game is played, a few settings and the admin commands the game already has.

Ways to play

Sandbox survival

The standard game: land on Gaiya, build an outpost, command AI drones and deal with wildlife, pirates and rival players.

Conquest

Added as a beta in March 2019 with four routes to victory: a volcano bomb, a Gaiyacite stockpile, tech scanners on alien artifacts, or a satellite that frees every bot. It starts with Game=Conquest on the command line.

Corporations and raids

Players band together in corporations and can attack rival strongholds. Early Access notes describe PvE, PvP and a PvP Lite mode on the official servers, which protected command centre territory.

Running the server

Admin commands

The official wiki lists chat commands, most of them cheats that need permission on the server, from teleporting players to spawning a pirate raid.

The day and night cycle

Since the final patch, TODCycleSpeed in DefaultGame.ini sets how fast days pass on the server.

Where the load comes from

The developers' patch notes kept targeting AI, turrets, structures and large bases on dedicated servers, so busy colonies are what a server feels most.

Memory for drones

RAM for Outpost Zero Server Hosting by Group Size

Symmetric Games never published memory figures for the server, so these tiers are our own sizing. The developers' notes point to AI drones, structures and big bases as the heavy parts, so memory rises with every plan: the free 5GB tier on 10 slots, then 8GB, 12GB and 16GB.

  • A small group of friends

    Plan: 10 Slots
    RAM included: 5GB

When to add more: Once bases grow large and drone crews multiply.

  • Several corporations

    Plan: 20 Slots
    RAM included: 8GB

When to add more: If the memory graph climbs over a long session, move to 12GB.

  • Community server

    Plan: 30 Slots
    RAM included: 12GB

When to add more: Large factories and pipelines may want 16GB.

  • Busy public server

    Plan: 40 Slots
    RAM included: 16GB

When to add more: Heavily built worlds can go to 20GB or 24GB.

Memory tiers on the order form: 5GB (free), 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. You can change tier later from the client area and the server keeps its files.

Before you land

Outpost Zero Server Hosting Essentials Before You Order

Five things worth knowing before your first landing.

  1. It is an older game

No patches since December 2019. Expect the game as it is, rough edges included.

  2. Everyone needs the game on Steam

Outpost Zero is still sold on Steam for Windows, so check your whole group owns it.

  3. Choose sandbox or Conquest

Sandbox is the standard game; Conquest, a 2019 beta, adds win conditions and ends a match.

  4. Plan restarts

Big bases and many drones are hard work for a server, so a daily restart is a sensible habit.

  5. Test your ping

Run the ping test from your players' PCs and choose the lowest location for most of them.

Answers

Outpost Zero Server Hosting Questions

Straight answers about running Outpost Zero today.

Getting started

How quickly is my Outpost Zero server ready?

It is set up automatically after payment and your panel login arrives by email. Game servers are usually online within 20 minutes.

Is Outpost Zero still updated?

No. The last patch, 1.0.10099, came out on 7 December 2019, and Symmetric Games has announced nothing since a sale in March 2020. The game is still sold on Steam and the server runs that final build.

How do players find the server?

Give the server a clear name and players can find it in the in-game server list, or share the address from the panel with your group.

Which location should I choose?

Run the ping test on this page from your own PC and choose the lowest result for most of your players. All 9 locations cost the same.

Modes and settings

How do I start a Conquest game?

Symmetric Games said to add Game=Conquest to the command line when Conquest arrived as a beta in March 2019. Set it in the Commandline Manager and restart the server.

Can I change how long days last?

Yes. The final patch made the time of day cycle configurable with TODCycleSpeed in DefaultGame.ini.

Are there admin commands?

Yes. The official wiki lists chat commands, most of them cheats that need permission on the server, such as teleporting a player or spawning a pirate raid.

Does Outpost Zero support mods?

It has no Steam Workshop, and we found no official mod tools. Servers run the game as Symmetric Games left it.

Performance and saves

How much RAM does an Outpost Zero server need?

Our plans include 5GB on 10 slots, rising to 16GB on 40. Large bases and many drones are the main reason to choose more.

Can the server restart itself?

Yes. The last patch fixed timed restarts set through the ini files, and Scheduled Tasks in our panel can restart the server on a timetable.

What if my group stops playing?

Monthly plans can be cancelled at any time. You can also ask support about moving the service to another game; the panel has a Switch Game button where that is supported.

Billing and plans

How much does Outpost Zero server hosting cost?

The 10 slot plan is the cheapest, at €10.50 a month. The plan table shows every size for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and longer terms cost less per month.

Can I upgrade later?

Yes. Add slots or memory from the client area, pay the difference and restart. The world stays where it is.

Is there a minimum term?

No. Monthly billing renews month by month and can be cancelled any time. The 3, 6 and 12 month terms are paid upfront for a lower monthly rate.

What Outpost Zero Is

Outpost Zero puts you in the role of an AI Overseer sent from Earth to the alien world of Gaiya, tasked with building a habitat for the human colonists who will follow. You do not build it alone: you command AI drones that mine, haul, craft and fight, and you keep them happy with quarters and entertainment, as the Steam page describes.

When the game left Early Access, Symmetric Games summed it up as a first person real time strategy game mixed with survival. Rival corporations compete for Gaiya's resources, pirates raid bases and native creatures attack, so a server is as much about automation and defence as it is about shooting.

An Honest Word on the Game's Status

Outpost Zero is not in active development. The final patch, 1.0.10099, came out on 7 December 2019, and the last post on the game's Steam news feed is a sale from March 2020. The developers wrote in that last patch post that they would keep working on performance for servers with large bases; no further patch followed.

  • Still sold: the Steam store page is live, so new players can buy the game and join.
  • Stable version: with no updates, the server and players never fall out of step.
  • Thin documentation: the official wiki's dedicated server page links to a hosting guide that no longer loads, so the patch notes are the best official record.

If your group enjoys the game as it is, a server works well. If you are hoping for new content, look at the related games at the end of this page.

Choosing a Plan: Players, Drones and Bases

Every player brings more than a character to the server. They bring a base, a power network, mining outposts, supply chains and a crew of AI drones, and the server keeps all of it in the world, even while its owners are offline. The developers' patch notes kept returning to AI, turret and structure performance on dedicated servers for exactly that reason.

PlanTypical groupRAM included
10 SlotsFriends learning the game together5GB
20 SlotsA few corporations sharing the planet8GB
30 SlotsA community server with rivalries12GB
40 SlotsA busy server with large colonies16GB

The order form sells sizes up to 160 slots. For an older game with a smaller player base, most groups are well served by the plans above, and you can move up later without losing the world.

Sandbox and Conquest

Most servers run the standard sandbox game, where survival never ends and corporations rise and fall. The final patch even re-added a weakened volcano as a global event in sandbox modes, so structures deteriorate regularly and the world never stands still.

Conquest arrived as a beta in March 2019. Gaiyacite starts to spawn after a warm-up, and a corporation wins in one of four ways:

  • Pyrrhic Victory: build and fully charge a volcano bomb in the mouth of the volcano.
  • Economic Victory: gather a set amount of Gaiyacite in storage.
  • Technology Victory: build and charge tech scanners on active alien artifacts.
  • Revolution Victory: launch a satellite that frees all bots from corporate control.

Settings You Can Change

Outpost Zero never had a full server manual that is still online, so its settings are known from the patch notes. These are the ones the developers documented:

  • TODCycleSpeed in DefaultGame.ini sets the speed of the day and night cycle (final patch, December 2019).
  • Timed restarts can be set through the ini files, fixed in the same patch.
  • Game=Conquest on the command line starts a Conquest match (March 2019).
  • Gather rate, resource respawn and environment damage became config settings in an Early Access patch in July 2018.

Stop the server before editing ini files, keep a backup of the original, and change one thing at a time so you know what made a difference.

Admin Commands and Moderation

The official wiki, linked from the game's website, lists chat commands typed into the chat window. Most are cheats that need permission on the server, and they take a player's Steam ID, or 0 for yourself.

  • FoodForThought lists every player with their Steam ID and map coordinates.
  • NoGlues teleports a player to map coordinates.
  • ResetPlayer respawns a player in a new body.
  • RadioFreeZerg spawns a pirate raid, handy for events.

Use cheats openly and sparingly. On a server with rival corporations, the fastest way to lose players is an admin who seems to play by different rules.

Keeping a Long-Running Colony Healthy

  • Restart daily: big worlds with many drones run better after a fresh start.
  • Back up before changes: take a snapshot before switching modes or editing settings, with our offsite copies of the last 7 days as a safety net.
  • Watch the memory graph: if it climbs towards the limit over a long session, move up a tier.
  • Keep the rules clear: decide how raids, alliances and admin help work before the server fills up.

What to Compare Before You Rent an Outpost Zero Server

For an older game, the details that matter are a little different.

  1. Memory on each planDrones and big bases need RAM. Check what each plan includes rather than just the slot count.
  2. Command line and ini accessConquest and the documented settings need both. Make sure you can edit them yourself.
  3. Backups you can restoreLook for backups you can take and restore without a ticket.
  4. Flexible termsFor a game no longer updated, monthly billing with no minimum term keeps you free to move on.
  5. Location and pingChoose a data centre near most of your group and test it first.
  6. Support that knows old gamesAsk whether the host still supports the game properly, not just sells it.
