Plugins & verification

Plugins and Verification for SCP: Secret Laboratory Server Hosting

Northwood gives server owners two official tools that shape a community: LabAPI for plugins, and the verified server list for being found. Both work on our servers.

Plugins

LabAPI, the official loader

LabAPI ships with the game since 14.1 and replaces the archived NwPluginAPI. Plugins go into the server's plugin folder by SFTP or the File Manager.

Finding plugins

Northwood links an official plugin list at plugins.scpslgame.com. Read each plugin's page for the LabAPI version it supports.

Transparently modded servers

The gameplay config has a setting that marks your server as transparently modded, as defined in Northwood's Community Server Guidelines. Set it honestly.

Verification and platforms

Getting verified

Verified servers appear in the main server list. Fill in server_name, serverinfo_pastebin_id and contact_email, then run the verify command in the console.

What verification asks

Northwood expects close to 100% uptime and at least two physical cores, 4GB of memory and 20GB of storage. All our plans meet that.

Windows and Steam

Steam lists SCP: Secret Laboratory for Windows. Players join through the in-game server list or by address.

Memory for every round

RAM for SCP: Secret Laboratory Server Hosting

Northwood's minimum for a full 25 player server with no plugins is 3GB of RAM, and verified servers need at least 4GB. Our plans start above both, at 5GB on 10 slots, and add memory as the slots and the plugin list grow.

  • Friends and small rounds, up to 10

    Plan: 10 Slots
    RAM included: 5GB

When to add more: Rarely. Plenty for vanilla rounds and a few plugins.

  • Default-size rounds, up to 20

    Plan: 20 Slots
    RAM included: 8GB

When to add more: A long plugin list with custom roles or events can justify 12GB.

  • Full community rounds, up to 30

    Plan: 30 Slots
    RAM included: 12GB

When to add more: Heavy plugin stacks and custom content may want 16GB.

Memory tiers on the order form: 5GB, 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB. Upgrade any time from the client area.

Before the breach

SCP: Secret Laboratory Server Hosting Essentials

Five things to know before your first containment breach.

  1. Configs live per port

The game keeps config_gameplay.txt in a folder named after the server's port. Edit the one for your port.

  2. Set your admins

Remote Admin roles and permissions are set in the Remote Admin config. Add yourself before you open the doors.

  3. Decide on verification

Verification is for public servers with steady uptime. A private friends server does not need it.

  4. Plugins and patches

After a big Northwood update, wait for your plugins to support it, then update together.

  5. Read the guidelines

Verified servers sign Northwood's Community Server Guidelines. Read them before you advertise.

Answers

SCP: Secret Laboratory Server Hosting FAQ

Short answers to what new SCP:SL server owners ask us most.

Getting started

How quickly is my SCP: Secret Laboratory server ready?

It is created automatically when your payment clears, and the panel login arrives by email. Most owners run their first round within minutes.

Where do I change the server settings?

Open config_gameplay.txt in the File Manager. It holds the server name, max_players, friendly fire, the respawn ticket system and many more round settings. Restart after saving.

How do I make myself an admin?

Add yourself to a role in the Remote Admin config, restart, and open the Remote Admin panel in game. Northwood's tech wiki explains the role and permission format.

Which location should I choose?

Run the ping test on this page from the PC you play on and pick the lowest result for most of your players. All 9 locations cost the same.

Verification and plugins

Can my server be verified?

Yes. Set server_name, serverinfo_pastebin_id and contact_email in the gameplay config, then run the verify command in the web console. If that fails, Northwood's tech wiki explains the email fallback.

Do your servers meet Northwood's requirements?

Yes. Verified servers need at least two physical cores, 4GB of memory and 20GB of storage, and our smallest plan has 5GB of RAM and 100GB of NVMe storage.

Can I install plugins?

Yes. LabAPI, Northwood's official plugin loader, is built into the game. Upload plugins with the File Manager or SFTP, restart, and check the log for errors.

What happens if my server goes offline for a while?

Northwood's verification guide says a verified server that stays offline for more than 14 days loses its token. Our servers run around the clock, so this only applies if you stop yours.

Players and updates

How many players can join?

The order form sells any slot count from 10 to 30. Northwood's default max_players is 20, which is why our 20 slot plan is the highlighted one.

What happens when SCP: Secret Laboratory updates?

Run Steam Update in the panel and restart, so the server matches the new client. On a plugin server, check each plugin supports the new version first.

How are backups handled?

Take snapshots of configs and plugins in the Backup Manager whenever you like, schedule them, and rely on our offsite copies for the last 7 days.

Billing

How much does SCP: Secret Laboratory server hosting cost?

The 10 slot plan is the cheapest, at $7.90 a month. The plans table shows every plan and cycle we sell, and longer cycles cost less per month.

Can I upgrade later?

Yes. Add slots, RAM, CPU or disk upgrades from the client area as the community grows. Your configs and plugins stay where they are.

Why Run Your Own SCP:SL Server

SCP: Secret Laboratory is Northwood Studios' free-to-play multiplayer horror game, set during a containment breach at Site-02. Players spawn as Scientists, Class-D personnel, Facility Guards, Mobile Task Force operatives or Chaos Insurgency soldiers, or as one of the escaped SCPs, and every round is a scramble to escape, contain or kill. The game is built on rounds, so the server's settings decide what each round feels like.

Public servers each have their own rules, plugins and moderators. Running your own lets you set friendly fire, respawn tickets, round restarts and plugins for your community, and keep the same rules from one evening to the next. A rented server adds steady hardware, a fixed address and the uptime Northwood expects from verified servers, without a PC left running at home. If your community also runs a GTA V roleplay city, FiveM server hosting keeps it with the same support team.

The Official Dedicated Server

Northwood publishes a separate Steam tool, the SCP: Secret Laboratory Dedicated Server, which runs inside a wrapper called LocalAdmin. Its tech wiki lists minimum specifications of 3GB of RAM, two CPU cores and 4GB of storage for a full 25 player server without plugins, and notes that ARM processors are not supported.

On our servers that tool is installed for you, kept current with Steam Update and started from the panel. You go straight to the interesting part: configuring the facility.

config_gameplay.txt and the Remote Admin Config

Almost every server setting lives in two text files, stored in a folder named after the server's port. The gameplay config handles the round itself; the Remote Admin config decides who can moderate.

Setting in config_gameplay.txtWhat it controlsDefault
server_nameThe name shown in the server listMy Server Name
max_playersHow many players a round can hold20
server_tickrateHow many times per second the server updates60
friendly_fireWhether team damage is onfalse
afk_timeSeconds before an idle player is kicked90

Admins, Roles and Moderation

Moderation runs through Remote Admin, an in-game panel that lets staff manage players and the round. Who sees which buttons is defined in the Remote Admin config, using roles and permissions documented on Northwood's tech wiki.

  1. Open the Remote Admin config in the File Manager.
  2. Create roles for owners, admins and moderators, each with only the permissions they need.
  3. Add each staff member's ID to their role.
  4. Restart and test the Remote Admin panel in game with a moderator account.

The tech wiki also covers whitelists, reserved slots and Northwood's Polaris moderation tool. A whitelist suits a private community server; reserved slots let regulars in when a public server is full.

LabAPI Plugins

Plugins are how SCP:SL communities stand out: custom roles, round events, admin tools and statistics. Since 14.1 the game includes LabAPI, Northwood's official plugin loader. The older NwPluginAPI repository was archived in June 2025 and now points to LabAPI, so new plugins target LabAPI.

  • Find plugins through Northwood's plugin list or a plugin's own page, and check the LabAPI version it needs.
  • Upload the plugin file to the server's plugin folder with SFTP or the File Manager.
  • Restart and read the log to confirm the plugin loaded.
  • Mark the server as transparently modded in the gameplay config if your plugins change gameplay in the way Northwood's guidelines describe.

More plugins mean more memory, which is why our larger plans include more RAM. If the memory graph in the panel rises with each plugin you add, step up a tier.

Getting on the Verified Server List

The verified list is where most players look for a server. Northwood's guide is clear that verification is a commitment: verified servers should have close to 100% uptime, handle a full player count without lag spikes, and run on at least two physical cores, 4GB of memory and 20GB of storage. A small private server for friends may not need it at all.

  1. Set server_name, serverinfo_pastebin_id and contact_email in config_gameplay.txt.
  2. Restart, then run the verify command from the web console, using the static option for a fixed address.
  3. If automatic verification fails, follow the email method in Northwood's guide.
  4. Read and sign the Community Server Guidelines when asked.

Choosing Slots and Memory

Round size changes the game. With 10 players a breach is intimate and every Class-D counts; with 30 the facility fills with firefights and respawn waves. Northwood's default max_players is 20, a good middle ground. Our order form sells any count from 10 to 30, and our plans bundle memory to match: 5GB on 10 slots, 8GB on 20 and 12GB on 30.

Those numbers sit well above Northwood's 3GB minimum because real servers run plugins, and plugins use memory. Start where your round size is, watch the panel's graph for a week, and adjust.

Updates, Megapatches and Backups

Northwood patches regularly, and the large Megapatch releases can change both gameplay and the plugin API. When an update lands, take a snapshot, check your plugins, run Steam Update and restart. Players on the new client cannot join an outdated server, so do not leave it long.

Backups on an SCP:SL server are mostly about configuration: your two config files, your plugins and their settings. The Backup Manager takes snapshots whenever you ask, Scheduled Tasks can take them nightly, and our offsite copies cover the last 7 days.

What to Compare Before You Rent an SCP:SL Server

The details that decide whether a community server lasts.

  1. Hardware for verificationCheck the plan meets Northwood's minimum of two physical cores, 4GB of memory and 20GB of storage.
  2. UptimeVerified servers need close to 100% uptime. Ask how the host handles maintenance.
  3. Console accessYou need a console to run the verify command and admin commands. Make sure it is in the panel.
  4. File accessPlugins and configs need a file manager and SFTP, not a locked-down form.
  5. Locations with a ping testTest from your own PC and pick the closest site to most players.
  6. BackupsLook for snapshots you can restore yourself before a plugin update goes wrong.
  7. Billing termsCompare monthly and longer cycles, and check for setup fees or minimum terms.
