What Renown Is, and Why a Server of Your Own Helps
Renown is a medieval multiplayer survival game from the independent studio RDBK Studios. You start with nothing, hunt and gather, put up a camp, and grow it into a fortress. Other players are doing the same, and the Steam page sums up the rules: build anywhere, kill anyone, raid everyone. Combat is skill based melee, with parries and ripostes deciding fights, and siege engines deciding wars.
The official servers run on RDBK's terms: a fixed wipe schedule, fixed raid hours, and whoever happens to join. A server of your own changes all three. Your clan can play a season at its own pace, a community can agree on fair raid times, and a small group can run a private realm where every rival is a known name.
From Launch to Now: How Renown Has Changed
Renown entered Early Access on 22 September 2025. The first months were about stability and wipe length: the studio said early on that its save system was the main reason servers needed weekly wipes, and it set out to fix that. Major Patch #1, live on 20 December 2025, raised official wipes to two weeks, added a wipe scheduler and reorganised the server browser with accurate wipe timers.
In March 2026 RDBK ran a free-to-play wipe through the demo, giving anyone full access for the length of that wipe. The June 2026 update redesigned research into a non-linear, category based system, rebuilt parties so they persist between sessions, and rebalanced the whole economy around one-month wipes. Server restarts moved to every 24 hours instead of every 90 minutes.
- Dedicated server tool: available on Steam since the August 2025 dev blog, with a Linux hosting guide on the wiki.
- Raid protection: online raid hours plus 80% reduced damage to bannered buildings outside them.
- Experimental Discord alerts: a notification when your base is under siege.
Planning Wipes and Seasons
The wipe is the heartbeat of any survival server. Short wipes reward players who can log in every day; long wipes reward builders and let slower groups catch up. RDBK has been moving official servers steadily towards longer wipes, and its December 2025 update was explicit that community servers can set any duration they like.
| Wipe length | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| One week | Fast PvP, boosted rates | Players with less time fall behind quickly |
| Two weeks | Most community servers | Plan a mid-wipe event to keep numbers up |
| One month | Builders and roleplay groups | Larger saves: a bigger plan gives headroom |
| Open ended | Private clan realms | Back up regularly in case a patch forces a reset |
Whatever you pick, publish it. Put the wipe date in the server name or on your Discord, and take a backup before every reset so an unexpected bug cannot take a season with it.
Raid Hours and Offline Protection
Offline raiding is the oldest complaint in survival games. Renown answers it with a raid window: the June 2026 patch notes set online raids from 4PM to 1AM local time, and outside that window buildings with a banner become fortified and take 80% less damage. A raider who attacks during downtime is told the base is fortified, and the screen shows whether the window is open.
The same notes say community servers can change the raid times. That matters for an international group: if your clan is in Australia and your server is in Sydney, a window that suits UK evenings makes no sense. Agree the hours with your regulars, set them, and say so in the server description.
Choosing a Plan: Slots and Memory
Size the server for the busiest evening of the wipe, usually the first weekend. A clan of eight with a few rivals is comfortable on 20 slots. A community that wants several clans fighting over land needs 40 or 60. Public servers chasing big wars go to 80, the size RDBK's September 2025 test handled well.
Memory rises with each plan because a survival map keeps every building, chest and siege engine loaded, and long wipes mean more of all of them. The 100 slot plan carries 20GB, but RDBK reported some instability at 100 players in testing, so run a trial night before you promise a 100 player event. Moving up a plan later keeps your world.
Setting Up Your First Realm
- Order a plan at the location nearest your players and wait for the setup email.
- Log in to the panel, stop the server and open its settings files.
- Set the server name and the admin details for you and your team.
- Choose the wipe length, the raid hours and any rate changes.
- Start the server, join it from the in-game browser and check the settings took effect.
- Take a first backup, then invite your players.
Running a Server Through Early Access Patches
Early Access means the game you host in October may play differently in December. Balance changes, new systems and save format changes are all normal. The safe routine is the same every time: announce the update, take a backup, update the server, then read the patch notes before players return. If a patch resets something you rely on, restore the backup or wait for a hotfix.
Some updates also ask players to clean up their own files. Before the March 2026 free-to-play wipe, RDBK asked players to delete the game's Config folder and verify files in Steam if they had trouble. Point your players at the official notes when that happens; it saves you a pile of support messages.
Keeping Players for the Whole Wipe
Numbers drop after the first week of most wipes. Clear rules help more than anything: what counts as griefing, whether clans have a size limit, and what admins will and will not step in on. Give each admin a sub user login, keep a ban list, and answer reports quickly. A server where the rules are known and kept is the one players come back to next season.
What to Compare Before You Rent a Renown Server
The headline price is only part of it. Check these before you choose a host.
- RAM that scalesA big realm on a small memory tier struggles late in the wipe. Look for memory that rises with slots.
- Config accessYou need to edit wipe length, raid hours and rates yourself, without a ticket each time.
- Backups you controlMake sure you can restore a world from the panel, especially around wipes and patches.
- Location and pingMelee timing punishes lag. Test the ping from your own PC first.
- Early Access supportAsk whether the host updates promptly and helps when a patch changes settings.
- Billing termsCompare monthly and longer cycles, and look for setup fees and minimum terms.
