Why Run a Dedicated V Rising Server
V Rising can be played alone, with friends or against other clans; Steam lists single-player, online co-op and online PvP. When you host a private game from the menu, Stunlock's own documentation explains that a copy of the server runs inside your game client. That works for a weekend, but the world only exists while your PC is on and you are playing.
A dedicated server is the same program running on its own around the clock. Castles keep standing, timers keep ticking and players in other time zones can log in when it suits them. For PvP it also means raid windows and server rules that apply to everybody, set by an admin rather than by whoever happens to be hosting.
Stunlock only ships the dedicated server for Windows, and it publishes it on Steam as a separate tool. We run it for you on 5.0GHz processors with NVMe storage, so you never have to install SteamCMD, open router ports or leave a PC running overnight.
The Two Settings Files Explained
Every V Rising server reads two JSON files from its Settings folder. ServerHostSettings.json describes the server itself; ServerGameSettings.json describes the game players experience. You can edit both from Configuration Files in our panel.
| Setting | File | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Name and Description | ServerHostSettings.json | What players see in the server list |
| MaxConnectedUsers | ServerHostSettings.json | The player limit, technically up to 128 |
| Password | ServerHostSettings.json | Empty for public, set for private |
| ListOnSteam and ListOnEOS | ServerHostSettings.json | Whether the server shows in the in-game browser |
| SaveName | ServerHostSettings.json | Which world folder the server loads |
| AutoSaveCount and AutoSaveInterval | ServerHostSettings.json | How many autosaves are kept and how often they run |
| GameSettingsPreset | ServerHostSettings.json | A ready-made rule set such as StandardPvP |
| Game rules | ServerGameSettings.json | PvP and castle rules, rates and the rest of the gameplay |
Stop the server before editing, change one thing at a time and keep a copy of the working file. A single missing comma in a JSON file is enough to stop the server reading it, so if a change does not seem to apply, check the formatting first.
PvP, PvE and Difficulty Presets
The quickest way to set the tone of a server is a preset. GameSettingsPreset loads one of the rule sets Stunlock ships in the server's GameSettingPresets folder, StandardPvP being the example in its guide, and GameDifficultyPreset picks Difficulty_Easy, Difficulty_Normal or Difficulty_Brutal for the world's enemies.
- Start from a preset that is close to what you want, then fine-tune in ServerGameSettings.json.
- PvE servers suit groups who want to explore Vardoran and challenge its bosses together without raids.
- PvP servers need clear rules: when castles can be attacked, how big a clan may be and how loot works.
- Brutal is for veterans who already know every boss, not for a fresh community.
Admins, Bans and RCON
Admin rights are tied to SteamIDs. Add each admin's SteamID on a separate line in adminlist.txt in the Settings folder; Stunlock notes the server picks up the change without a restart. In game, the admin enables the console in the options menu, presses the ~ key and types adminauth.
Bans work the same way in reverse. Banning a player from the console writes their SteamID to banlist.txt in the same folder, and you can edit that file by hand to lift a ban or add one in advance.
For remote control there is RCON, configured in ServerHostSettings.json with its own Enabled flag, port and password. Stunlock requires the password to be set, and it should be long and unique, because anyone who has it can run admin commands without joining the game.
Bringing an Existing World to Your Server
Stunlock documents how to move a world from a private game to a dedicated server, so a group that started on someone's PC does not have to start again.
- On the host PC, find the session folder under AppData\LocalLow\Stunlock Studios\VRising, in CloudSaves\<SteamID>\v4 or Saves\v4.
- Stop your server and upload that whole folder into the server's Saves\v4 folder with FTP or the File Manager.
- Set SaveName to the folder's name and leave GameSettingsPreset empty, so the server keeps the world's own settings.
- Start the server and check that castles and progress are where you left them.
- Delete the private copy from inside the game, not by deleting files, or Steam Cloud may restore it.
Coming from another host instead? Tick the free Migrate Old Host Saved Progress add-on when you order, then open a support ticket with your old host's FTP details. We copy the world and saved progress across for you.
Restarts, Updates and Wipes
Stunlock recommends restarting a dedicated server every day. In our panel, a Scheduled Task using Backup and Restart with Messages does exactly that: it warns players 10, 5, 2 and 1 minutes before, saves the world, restarts and takes a backup. Our guide example repeats it every six hours for a busy server.
Updates matter more than they seem. Some hot fixes, such as Hot Fix 10 in December 2025, only take effect once each server updates, and when 1.1 launched, servers left on 1.0 dropped out of the server list. A Steam Update task with Update only if a new version is available checks on a schedule and restarts only when there is something to install.
Wipes are a choice. Stunlock's ResetDaysInterval and DayOfReset settings reset the world automatically, which many PvP communities use to give newcomers a fair start. A PvE world can stay permanent, especially now that no new content update is planned.
Adding Mods Without Breaking the Server
V Rising mods are community plugins that load through BepInEx. Our Mod Manager installs BepInEx from its Frameworks category; installing it by hand as if it were a mod breaks the server.
- Stop the server and install BepInEx from the Mod Manager.
- Open Configuration Files, edit VRising.mods and add one Thunderstore package per line.
- Press ThunderStore.io Mods and wait for the install to finish.
- Start the server once so each plugin creates its config, usually in BepInEx\config.
- If a plugin also runs on players' PCs, press Download BepInEx ModPack and share the installer.
Add mods one at a time and test after each one, and prefer plugins that are still maintained. A mod that has not been updated for a long time is the usual suspect when a server stops starting after a game patch. Take a backup before every change so you can roll back in seconds.
Choosing the Right Slot Count
MaxConnectedUsers can technically go up to 128, but the right number depends on how you play. Stunlock's own configuration example uses 40. Private PvE groups are usually far smaller.
| Community | Suggested plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Friends playing PvE | 10 Slots | Plenty for a group that plays together |
| Small public server | 20 Slots | Enough rivals for PvP without an empty map |
| Several established clans | 30 Slots | Room for regular raids and newcomers |
| Busy public PvP | 40 Slots | Matches Stunlock's example configuration |
| Large community | 60 Slots | For servers that fill up most evenings |
Each step up also adds memory, so you never need to work out RAM separately. Start where your community is today; moving to a bigger plan later keeps the world intact.
What to Compare Before Renting a V Rising Server
The server software is the same everywhere. These are the differences that decide how your season goes.
- Memory includedCheck how much RAM comes with each slot count, not just the starting price.
- Restart and update toolsDaily restarts with warnings and automatic patching save more admin time than anything else.
- Mod supportBepInEx and Thunderstore installs from the panel beat uploading framework files by hand.
- MigrationAsk whether moving an existing world is included, and whether it costs extra.
- Ping to your clanAiming skillshots punishes lag. Test the locations from where your players live.
