This guide covers what a dedicated Sniper Elite 4 server does, where the game's multiplayer stands in 2026, and how to set up, moderate and look after a 12 player PC lobby. It is written for the player who ends up running the server for everyone else.

Why a Dedicated Sniper Elite 4 Server
In an ordinary Sniper Elite 4 lobby one player's PC does the hosting. If that player quits, crashes or has a slow upload, the match suffers for everyone, and nobody can start a game until someone volunteers to host again. A dedicated server takes that job off the players. It is a separate program from Rebellion, the Sniper Elite 4 Dedicated Server, which runs the lobby by itself and stays online whether anyone is playing or not.
Rebellion made dedicated servers a proper part of the game soon after launch. Patch 1.1.2 in February 2017 stopped them reporting one of the players as the host, and patch 1.2 in March 2017 put them into matchmaking and made the Invite button work on them. Since then a rented server is simply another lobby in the browser, except that it is always there and you decide what it runs.
Running the server at home is possible, but it means a PC left switched on, ports forwarded on the router and your upload shared with eleven other players. In a data centre the server gets a fixed address, steady bandwidth and DDoS filtering, and you look after it from a web panel instead of a remote desktop.
Sniper Elite 4 Multiplayer in 2026
Sniper Elite 4 came out on 14 February 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and later reached Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Before launch Rebellion pledged that every additional multiplayer map and mode would be free, and it kept that promise through 2017.
| Date | Update | What it added |
|---|---|---|
| 21 March 2017 | Patch 1.2 | Elimination mode, the Night Woods map, dedicated servers in matchmaking, web RCon |
| 25 April 2017 | Deathstorm Part 2 update | The Urban map, with Capture the Flag back in the mode list |
| 30 May 2017 | Patch 1.4 | The Fortress map, playable in every mode including No-Cross |
| 18 July 2017 | Patch 1.5.0 | The Bunker map and bans by Steam ID for server admins |
Patch 1.5.0 is the last numbered patch in Rebellion's Steam announcements, so the dedicated server you rent today is the same mature build that clans have run for years. For a server owner that stability is a real advantage: a config that works keeps on working, and there is little risk of an update breaking your rotation on a Friday night.
Twelve Slots and the Shape of Your Lobby
Rebellion lists competitive multiplayer for up to 12 players on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and up to 8 online on Switch. Our order form sells Sniper Elite 4 in one size to match: 12 slots. There is no bigger plan to grow into, because the game has no bigger lobby. A second lobby simply means a second server, with its own name, rotation and memory.
Twelve players can mean very different evenings. Team modes put two squads of six against each other, Elimination turns the lobby into a last-team-standing fight where one kill brings a teammate back, and the free maps add variety without anyone having to buy anything. When you plan a rotation, remember that maps and modes are paired: Fortress supports every competitive mode including No-Cross, while Bunker supports every mode except No-Cross.
- Clan scrims: a team mode on a short list of maps the clan knows well.
- Public lobby: a mix of modes across every free map, so regulars always find something new.
- Events: one map and one mode for the night, announced in advance on your Discord or Steam group.
Setting Up a Sniper Elite 4 Server
The dedicated server is driven by console commands, the same style Rebellion uses for its RCon settings, such as RCon.Password and RCon.Listen. They live in the server's config, which the Configuration Files tab opens in your browser. Most owners change three things on day one: the server name, the maps and modes it cycles through, and the admin password.
- Stop the server from the panel, because changes made while it runs are not applied.
- Open the config in Configuration Files and set the server name your players will look for.
- Choose the maps and modes the server should cycle through, keeping No-Cross off Bunker.
- Set an RCon password, then decide whether you want remote admin switched on.
- Save, start the server and check the Log Viewer before you share the name.
Keep a copy of the working config on your own PC through SFTP. When you experiment later, you can paste the known good version straight back. And if a change goes wrong in a way you cannot see, restore the backup you took before you started.
Moderating with Rebellion's RCon
Rebellion added public RCon support to the dedicated server on 21 March 2017. The web interface shows the game status in real time, gives you an interactive console, lists connected players with a link to each Steam profile, and issues kicks and bans. Rebellion's announcement pointed players to rcon.sniperelite4.com and noted that the same page ships with the server and also runs offline.
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| RCon.IP | The network interface RCon listens on | 127.0.0.1, so local connections only |
| RCon.Port | The port RCon listens on | 27080 |
| RCon.Password | The password the web interface asks for | Set your own |
| RCon.Listen | Starts listening on that IP and port | Run it after the settings above |
Patch 1.5.0 added Server.KickBanSteamID, which bans a player by Steam ID without them being connected, and made the RCon player list show the IP of every client. Between them they cover the usual moderation jobs: spot the problem player, remove them, and keep them out when they come back under a new name.
Updates and Matching Versions
Players can only join a server that runs the same game version as they do. When Rebellion patches Sniper Elite 4, Steam updates each player's copy and the server needs the same build. In the panel that is one button: stop the server, press Steam Update, let the update window finish and start the server again.
Patches have been rare since 1.5.0, but the routine is worth keeping. Take a backup before any update, and if players suddenly cannot connect after a Steam download, check the server's version before you change anything else.
Choosing a Location for Long Shots
Sniper Elite 4 makes you account for wind, gravity and your own heart rate on a long shot, and a laggy connection is the last thing you want on top of that. Our servers run in 9 locations: the UK, France and Germany in Europe, Buffalo, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami in the US, and Sydney in Australia.
Run the ping test on this page from the PC you play on, and ask a couple of regulars to do the same. Pick the location with the lowest result for most of the lobby. Every location costs the same, and if your group changes later, support can move the server for you.
Keeping a Public Lobby Healthy
A server that runs for weeks stays smoother with regular restarts. We suggest at least two a day for a busy lobby, set once in the Scheduler and then left alone. Choose times when the server is usually empty, and tell your regulars when they are, so nobody loses a close round to a restart.
- Restarts: two a day from the Scheduler, at the quietest hours.
- Backups: one before every config change, on top of our 7 days of offsite copies.
- Admins: RCon access only for people who are online to moderate.
- Logs: a look at the Log Viewer after each change, before you invite players back.
What to Compare Before You Rent a Sniper Elite 4 Server
Most hosts run the same game files. These are the details that decide how the server feels a month in.
- Slots that match the gameSniper Elite 4 lobbies stop at 12 players on PC. Paying for more slots than that buys nothing.
- RAM in the priceCheck how much memory the base price includes and what a bigger tier costs.
- Locations you can testLook for a data centre near your players and run a ping test before you buy.
- Access to RConMake sure you can use Rebellion's RCon, the quickest way to moderate a live match.
- Backups you can restoreFind out whether you can roll back a change yourself and how long offsite copies are kept.
- Billing termsCompare monthly and longer cycles, and look for setup fees or minimum terms.
