Into the Wild

SCUM 1.0 and the Into the Wild Update

SCUM left Early Access with version 1.0 on 17 June 2025, after almost seven years, and Gamepires released its own dedicated server to every owner at the same time. The newest update, Into the Wild, arrived on 5 October 2026.

1.017 June 2025UpdateInto the Wild · 5 October 2026Early Access29 August 2018

01

What Into the Wild added

A fishing rework with line tension and three tiers of fishing quests, a server leaderboard for the biggest catches, crows and seagulls, clothing made from mutant animals and an Apex Deathmatch arena. It needed no wipe.

02

Patches since

Hotfix 1.3.4.2 followed on 8 October 2026. After every patch, run Steam Update on the server so players on the new build can join.

03

Official wipes, not yours

Gamepires plans a partial wipe of its official servers with the next update, keeping character stats and gold. Gamepires says private servers are not wiped; on your own server, wipes happen when you decide.

04

What is coming

Gamepires lists tattoos, a free Photo Mode and work towards PC controller support for the next update, and is exploring a harsher optional Survivalist ruleset. Plans can change and no dates are fixed.

Settings & platforms

Mods and Platforms for SCUM Server Hosting

SCUM servers are customised through settings rather than mods: the official server exposes loot, NPCs, vehicles, raids, the economy and quests in its config files. Official mod support is still on the long-term list.

Customising

No official mods yet

SCUM has no official mod support or Steam Workshop. In September 2026 Gamepires said mod support remains part of its longer-term plans but will not arrive in 2026.

Customise with settings

ServerSettings.ini covers puppets, animals, armed NPCs, vehicles, fog, camera perspective, quests, base building and flags, which is where most private servers set themselves apart.

Your own economy and quests

EconomyOverride.json changes trader prices, and since 1.0 a quest file lets server owners write their own quests for players to complete.

Platforms

PC only, on Steam

SCUM is a Windows game on Steam. No console version has been released, so a SCUM server is for PC players.

No crossplay to worry about

With one platform, everyone joins from the same game. Keep the server on the latest build with Steam Update and nobody is locked out.

Anti-cheat stays on

The official server tutorial lists a launch option to turn BattlEye off but advises against it. Keep it on for any public server.

Windows (Steam)

Memory, sized for you

How Much RAM SCUM Server Hosting Needs

Gamepires gives no memory figure for the server; it says capacity for players, items and NPCs depends on the hardware. SCUM is a heavy game (the PC version asks for 16GB), and the server holds every base, vehicle, puppet and stash on a 225 square kilometre island. Our plans start with 12GB included and rise to 32GB on 128 slots.

  • Up to 10 players

    Plan: 10 Slots
    RAM included: 12GB

When to add more: Only if you raise puppet, animal or NPC limits well above default.

  • 11 to 20 players

    Plan: 20 Slots
    RAM included: 12GB

When to add more: Many vehicles and flags, or high NPC limits, are the reason to try 16GB.

  • 21 to 30 players

    Plan: 30 Slots
    RAM included: 16GB

When to add more: Long-running servers with many bases benefit from 20GB.

  • 31 to 48 players

    Plan: 48 Slots
    RAM included: 20GB

When to add more: Busy PvP servers with frequent raids and events can use 24GB.

  • 49 to 80 players

    Plan: 80 Slots
    RAM included: 24GB

When to add more: The size of an official server; step up to 32GB for heavy settings.

  • 81 to 128 players

    Plan: 128 Slots
    RAM included: 32GB

When to add more: SCUM's maximum, with our largest memory tier.

Memory tiers on the order form: 12GB, 16GB, 20GB, 24GB and 32GB, and the order form also has slot sizes between our plans. You can change tier later from the client area without losing the island.

What SCUM admins lean on most once the island has a community.

Tune the island

Set puppet, animal and armed NPC limits, NPC difficulty, fog and camera rules to suit PvE or PvP.

Raid times

Decide when bases can be raided with RaidTimes.json, so nobody loses a base at 4am.

Whitelists and exclusives

Give regulars priority when the server is full, or lock it to a list of named players.

Clean restores

Back up before a settings change or a full wipe, and roll back if the island is not what you planned.

DDoS protection

Attack traffic is filtered upstream, which matters on PvP servers where tempers run high.

5.0GHz CPUs, NVMe drives

Fast processors and storage for a big Unreal Engine world full of players and vehicles.

Before the first drop

SCUM Server Hosting Essentials Before You Order

Five things that save headaches in the first week.

  1. Stop before you edit

Change ServerSettings.ini and the user lists with the server stopped, then start it again so the settings load.

  2. Make yourself admin

Add your SteamID64 to AdminUsers.ini. Add it to ServerSettingsAdminUsers.ini as well to change settings from the in-game admin menu.

  3. Pick a player cap

MaxPlayers defaults to 64 and accepts 1 to 128. Set it to match your plan and the community you expect.

  4. Plan your wipes

The FullWipe setting wipes the island. Back up first and tell players in advance; official wipes do not touch private servers.

  5. Shut down cleanly

Gamepires' tutorial notes that leftover SCUM.db-shm and SCUM.db-wal files mean the last shutdown was not clean. Use stop or restart rather than killing the server.

Answers

SCUM Server Hosting FAQ

Short answers to what new SCUM server owners ask us most.

Getting started

How quickly is my SCUM server ready?

Setup is automatic once your payment clears, usually within a few minutes and at most about 20. Your panel login arrives by email.

How do players join?

Players find the server by name in the in-game server list. To keep it to your group, list each player's SteamID64 in ExclusiveUsers.ini.

How do I become an admin?

Stop the server, add your SteamID64 to AdminUsers.ini, and to ServerSettingsAdminUsers.ini if you want to change settings in game, then start it again.

Which location should I choose?

Run the ping test on this page from your PC and pick the lowest result for most of your players. All 9 locations cost the same.

Players and settings

How many players can a SCUM server hold?

SCUM's MaxPlayers setting accepts 1 to 128, with 64 as the default. Our plans run from 10 to 128 slots, with more memory on the larger ones.

Can I change loot, puppets and NPCs?

Yes. ServerSettings.ini controls limits for puppets, animals and armed NPCs, armed NPC difficulty, vehicle limits, fog, camera perspective, quests and base building, among much more.

Can I make the server whitelist only?

Yes. Players in ExclusiveUsers.ini are the only ones allowed to join. WhitelistedUsers.ini is different: it gives listed players priority access when the server is full.

Does SCUM support mods?

Not officially. There is no Steam Workshop, and Gamepires has said mod support is a longer-term plan that will not arrive in 2026. Most customisation is done through the server settings.

Updates and wipes

What happens when SCUM updates?

Run Steam Update in the panel and restart, so the server matches the players' version. Take a backup first if the patch notes mention a wipe or big changes.

Will official wipes reset my server?

No. Gamepires' planned partial wipe applies to its official servers only, and it says private servers are not wiped. On your server you wipe with the FullWipe setting when you choose.

Can console players join?

No. SCUM is a Windows game on Steam with no released console version, so every player on the server is on PC.

Billing

How much does SCUM server hosting cost?

The 10 slot plan is the cheapest at $12.73 a month. The plans table shows every size for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and the longer terms cost less per month.

Is there a contract?

No. Monthly plans renew month by month and you can cancel any time. Longer terms are paid upfront at a lower monthly rate.

Why Run a Private SCUM Server

SCUM drops prisoners onto a 225 square kilometre island inspired by Croatia, as contestants in a televised survival show. On Gamepires' official servers the rules, the population and the wipe schedule are set for everyone. Official servers grew to 80 players in July 2026, and the next update is planned to bring a partial wipe of official servers that keeps character stats and gold.

A private server changes all of that. You choose who plays, how dangerous the island is, how much loot there is, when bases can be raided and whether the island is ever wiped. Gamepires released the SCUM Server with 1.0 as a free tool in every owner's Steam library; renting it from us means a fixed address, a data centre connection and a panel instead of a PC left running at home.

ServerSettings.ini: Shaping the Island

Almost everything that makes one SCUM server different from another sits in ServerSettings.ini, which you edit from Configuration Files with the server stopped. Gamepires has documented these settings in its 1.0 notes and later updates:

SettingWhat it changes
MaxPlayersPlayer cap, 1 to 128 (default 64)
MaxAllowedPuppets / Animals / NPCsHow many puppets, animals and NPCs can be active
ArmedNPCDifficultyLevelArmed NPC difficulty from 1 to 3, with separate health and damage multipliers
AnimalGlobalDensityMultiplierHow many animals roam; the default became 0.5 in July 2026
Vehicle limitsMaximum numbers of each vehicle type, such as tractors and boats
EnableFogTurns fog on or off
AllowFirstPerson / ThirdPerson / CrosshairWhich camera views and aiming aids players get
QuestsEnabledWhether quests are available
DisableBaseBuilding / AllowMultipleFlagsPerPlayerWhether players can build, and if they may hold more than one flag
FullWipeTriggers a full wipe of the island

Admins, Bans, Whitelists and Exclusive Servers

Access to a SCUM server is handled by plain text files next to ServerSettings.ini, each holding one SteamID64 per line. Gamepires' server tutorial describes them like this:

FileWhat a listed player gets
AdminUsers.iniAdmin rights; tags such as [SetGodMode] and [RestartServer] add extra commands
ServerSettingsAdminUsers.iniCan change server settings from the in-game admin menu
BannedUsers.iniCannot join
WhitelistedUsers.iniPriority access, even when the server is full
ExclusiveUsers.iniOnly listed players may join at all
SilencedUsers.iniMuted in chat

The difference between the last three catches people out. A whitelist on SCUM is a priority queue for regulars, while the exclusive list is what locks a server to a group. Admins listed with the right tags can use commands such as #SetGodMode and #RestartServer, and #ListDLCItems shows the DLC items available.

Traders, Economy and Custom Quests

Outposts are the safe zones where traders sell gear and vehicles; since 1.0 their safe radius is 500 metres. On your own server, EconomyOverride.json lets you change trader prices, which is the quickest way to make money tight on a hardcore server or generous on a casual one.

Version 1.0 also opened quests to server owners: a quest file lets you write your own quests for players, and QuestsEnabled switches the system on or off. The Into the Wild update added three tiers of fishing quests and a server leaderboard for the biggest catches, which gives a PvE community something to compete over.

Base Building, Flags and Raid Times

Bases in SCUM are claimed with flags. Gamepires raised the limit to 100 flags per person in July 2026, and AllowMultipleFlagsPerPlayer decides whether players can hold more than one. DisableBaseBuilding turns building off entirely for a pure survival or event server.

  • RaidTimes.json sets when bases can be raided, so a PvP server can protect bases outside agreed hours.
  • Turret settings decide what base turrets attack, including sentries.
  • Raid protection messages tell players when their base is safe and when it is not.
  • Flag limits keep a few large groups from claiming the whole map.

Puppets, NPCs and Difficulty

Puppets are former contestants, re-animated and wandering the island; mechs and sentries guard the military areas; and armed NPCs add human threats. Each has its own settings. Raising the puppet and NPC limits makes the island more dangerous and busier, and also puts more load on the server, which is one reason our larger plans include more memory.

For a PvE community, a lower armed NPC difficulty, fog off and third person on make the island friendlier. For a hardcore server, first person only, no crosshair, higher NPC difficulty and tight loot do the opposite. Gamepires is also exploring an optional, harsher Survivalist ruleset for a future update.

Saves, Wipes and Clean Shutdowns

The island is saved in the server's SaveFiles folder. Gamepires' tutorial warns that if SCUM.db-shm and SCUM.db-wal files are left behind, the server did not shut down cleanly, so always stop or restart it from the panel rather than forcing it closed. Take a panel backup before every patch or big settings change, and remember we keep offsite copies for the last 7 days.

When the community wants a fresh start, the FullWipe setting wipes the island. Announce it in advance, back up the old save in case anyone wants it, and use the wipe as a chance to retune loot, raids and the economy.

What to Compare Before You Rent a SCUM Server

SCUM is demanding, and the cheapest offer is not always the one that copes on a busy night.

  1. Memory includedSCUM is a heavy game. Check how much RAM comes with the plan and what the next tier costs.
  2. Full file accessYou need ServerSettings.ini, the user lists, the economy and raid files, not a handful of sliders.
  3. Processor speedA fast CPU keeps a busy island responsive; look for upgrade options.
  4. Steam updates you controlMake sure you can update the server the moment a patch lands, or schedule it.
  5. Location and pingTest latency from where your players are; gunfights depend on it.
  6. Backups and restoresCheck you can back up and restore yourself, and how long offsite copies are kept.
  7. Billing termsCompare monthly and longer terms and look for setup fees or minimum contracts.
