Old password and new trouble
Attention! You have been hacked, so the content of the newsletter, which you received in the morning of the 16th octobre. We want to throw light now on the confusion this newsletter caused among our users. In March this year, there have been repeated attacks on webspell.org. As a result of the attacks the hacker managed to get the passwords of our admin users. As a consequence all admin passwords have been changed, security vulnerabilities in the code have been fixed and there wasn't any chance anymore for the hacker to cause further trouble.
Of course legal measures have been taken, but the legal authorities seemed to be overstrained with really investigating this issue.
I recently changed my password again and unfortunately switched it back to the old one which the hacker stole in march. Cause of this the hacker was able to log into our admin area and send the above mentioned newsletter.
So the todays "hack" (if you would really call it a hack) was not the exploit of some new security vulnerability in webspell. No SQL dump or other data was downloaded. Seems like the hacker finally wanted to create his own personal moment of glory.
We apologize for the created confusion among our users this morning.
This time we want to try another way before we are releasing the new webSPELL version to the public.
Last night I updated webspell.org to webSPELL 4.02. This way, you are able to get an idea of the upcoming release and we get the chance to fix any not catched bug in advance and check webSPELL's performance behaviour.
In the right upper corner you'll find two flags which will enable you to select the system language at webspell.org: english or german. This feature is using the new language switch of webSPELL, so you can already imagine how it will work in the release. We are currently awaiting the results of our language files translators to support additional system languages. At the moment we are not able to tell, which languages will be included in webSPELL 4.02, but if you're interested in translating webSPELL's language files into any additional languages just contact me via PM or leave a comment on this news post.
There's another issue, where we are hoping for your cooperation: If you discover any kind of bug on this page, please contact me too. These bugs will be fixed immediately and won't occur any more in the release of webSPELL 4.02.
As you may have noticed webspell.org had some problems over the last days. Deeper investigation pinpointed harddrive failures as the cause of all problems.
Please excuse any inconveniences you experienced over the past days.
